Citlali is a high priestess of the Masters of the Night-Wind tribe. She is afflicted with an unknown ailment that makes her live longer compared to other people, and because of her "older" age, is referred to as "Granny Itztli" by her tribe.

Personality

Citlali serves as a high priestess of the Mictlan tribe in Natlan and is renowned for her accurate predictions, earning her the affectionate nickname "Granny Itztli" among the Natlanese.

Her decision to live in seclusion suggests a preference for solitude and introspection, allowing her to focus on her divinations and maintain a strong connection with the celestial forces she interprets.

Citlali has a strong connection to her adopted grandson Ororon and feels responsible for his well-being. This suggests a past incident that has shaped her personality and motivations. This connection to Ororon, combined with her role as a guardian, indicates a deep sense of compassion and responsibility that drives her actions.

Citlali has a short temper and generally scolds those that do something wrong, often expressing it with a harsh sting in her words and a stoic face. Deep down, however, she cares for those who she sees as her friends, especially the Traveler, even showing signs of jealousy when the Traveler spends time with other people over her. However, she is afflicted with something that appears to prevent her from aging, and tries to avoid bonding with others out of a fear of getting too close to them when they died, as evidenced with an unnamed girl (who she brushed off as "annoying" out of habit)^[4] and Huitzilin.^[5]

She tends to stay at home, only coming out when something requires her utmost attention. Often while she is not outside, she tends to binge on light novels from Inazuma and eat snacks. She is also an avid drinker.

Appearance

Citlali uses the medium female model. She has pale skin, and long light pale pink hair that gradually fades into dark pastel pink and eventually dark lavender at the tips. Her eyes are a striking gradient of deep blue transitioning into a lighter blue, with subtle pink pupils.

History

Past

Citlali was born at least 200 years ago prior to the Traveler's arrival in Teyvat. She became well-versed in shamanistic magic by the tribe, eventually befriending Huitzilin after she challenged her numerous times to the point that they ended up drawing. During this time, Citlali discovered that she was not aging whereas everyone else was, and began tracking her birthdays in response. Huitzilin eventually passed from old age, leaving Citlali upset at her demise. Nonetheless, Huitzilin would send her students at Citlali to challenge her — in which Citlali prevailed each time, but the challengers would eventually become proven in their own right. This tradition continued to be carried on to the present day.^[6] Huitzilin's Saurian companion, Tlapo, would try to get more people to befriend Citlali, seeing how lonely she was.^[7]

At some point prior to the Traveler's arrival, Citlali became acquainted with Mavuika and adopted Ororon as a grandson of sorts when he was abandoned. She also acquired the Ancient Name Ukumbuko, which coincided with her Cryo Vision,^[8] while she also created two doll companions, Itzpapa and Citlalin from the bones of small animals that died from natural causes.^[9]

Present

Citlali commissioned Kinich to deliver a Spiritspeaker Stone to the Scions of the Canopy, which was later used by the Traveler and Mualani in order to figure out where Kachina was when she failed to return from the Pilgrimage of the Return of the Sacred Flame despite her party having been victorious. Shortly after they left, Capitano attacked Mauvika but was defeated, during which he escaped with magic that Mauvika recognized as that from the Masters of Night Wind, so she sent Kinich to talk to her to figure out who helped him. Meanwhile, with Vichama's aid, the Traveler and Mualani is able to locate Kachina, but his attempt to delve deeper in order to find his friend Mallko prompts Chasca to shatter the stone for everyones' safety.^[10]

Upon learning of the incident at the Stadium of the Sacred Flame, Citlali discovered the person who helped Capitano was her "grandson," Ororon. Surprised at the unexpected betrayal, Citlali wanted to prove that Ororon was not a traitor, believing he was forced to help the Fatui. Xilonen sent a letter asking her to come, but she did not respond, reasoning that she would be showing up in person to begin with. Learning that the Traveler was also required to obtain an Ancient Name of their own, Citlali explained that the task would require permission from the Lord of the Night before asking them to help her track Ororon.^[11]

The trio manage to discover Ororon in a Fatui camp and free him, where Citlali was furious to learn that Ororon had willingly helped the Fatui, though he had done so in order to protect her, as he felt that they were looking for her when he first met them. Despite the treachery, Citlali petitioned to take custody of him, but soon discovered that Ororon had been hiding more secrets and interrupted a meeting between him, Capitano and the Traveler. As she began to take him back to the stadium, Ororon scattered an illusory powder which made her even more furious when she realized he was nowhere near them. After drinking her worries away, Citlali explained his past to the Traveler and hypothesized why he was willing to help the Fatui.^[12]

Citlali later learned her tribe was under attack and rushed to defend it, where she ran into Ororon, who was also obliged to defend his tribe. He left once the battle was over, and aware that his talisman was in need of maintenance, created a new one for him which she had Ifa deliver on her behalf. She placed a spell on the bag itself, which allowed her and the Traveler to view Ororon's memories. When they learned what he was up to, they informed Mauvika of the situation.^[13] She did not participate in the operation, as her tribe was in need of manpower.^[14]

Once the operation concluded and Ororon was retrieved, Citlali scolded him for his reckless actions, but not before remarking that said actions had helped the Archon's plan. Ororon asked for forgiveness, and Citlali told him that she would consider after examining his actions. Later, she and Xilonen went to visit the Lord of the Night, where she revealed that she had divined Mavuika's future, seeing only death for her at the end of her plan. Refusing to accept such an outcome, Citlali hoped to avert her fate. The Lord of the Night also gave her a Pilgrim's Chronicle so the Traveler's deeds could be recorded in Natlan, and she gave it to them when she returned.^[15] The Abyss then launched a nation-wide invasion, and Mavuika sent Citlali back to her tribe to help defend them from any incursions.^[16] Once the invasion was repelled, Citlali spoke with the Traveler, informing them of Mavuika's fate. The Traveler agreed, and Citlali appreciated their help, seeing that there was something special in them that could allow them to defy the rules. She also told them not to let the Archon know.^[17]

The Traveler continued their good deeds across Natlan, overflowing the chronicle with enough memories. Xilonen created their Ancient Name, and once it was forged, Citlali had the Traveler undergo some tests to ensure the Ancient Name would properly work. During a resonance test, spirits of the deceased were attracted to them, once of them being Vichama. Horrified at the thought that a hero of Natlan would die forgotten, Citlali used her powers to send Vichama's soul to the Night Kingdom, earning his gratitude. She was also able to save the soul of Ayele, but other souls in the area were too weak and dissipated — these souls and their memories were lost to the passage of time, which gave her deep sorrow. Eventually, they came upon two Saurian souls, Cetan and Hnaska, who Citlali tried to send back, but they refused, instead wanting to spend their final moments with Ayo. Xilonen translated their response to her, and while Citlali was pained to not let them rest in peace, she ultimately respected their wishes.^[18]

In spite of the Traveler and Mavuika destroying Gosoythoth, Citlali informed them that her fate was still unchanged. Wondering where she went, they realized she went to Ochkanatlan and made their way there, seeing the Ronova observe them from the skies. Citlali asked Mavuika to reconsider her sacrifice, but she was insistent on doing so until Capitano arrived and offered his own life force instead in an attempt to make the Ronova lift the curse of immortality. She chose not to, and the Lord of the Night was blessed with immortality in return.^[19]

The Wayob later informed Citlali that Xbalanque would be arriving from the Night Kingdom to observe present-day Natlan, and when she received the news, she made her way to the Stadium of Sacred Flame to inform Mavuika of the development. She took a short nap after giving instructions to Biram before participating in a competition the next day, feeling that her presence was justified to respect the end of the war.^[20]

The Abyss Lector Enjou would later convince a Night-Wind member, Leyla, to undergo "hypersensitivity training" in order to learn more about Mare Jivari. Citlali learned of the situation and broke Leyla out of his trance while trying to trap Enjou so she could question him, but he was able to escape her clutches.^[21]

When a Fontainian merchant named Montluson arrived at the tribe's lands to inquire about the Battle of Seven Colors, he learned of Citlali's relationship to Huitzilin and tried to convince her to help by offering two out-of-print light novels. She agreed to help only for the Traveler's sake, but became suspicious when he failed to recognize two titles she mentioned that were commercial successes across Teyvat. Acting on this intuition, Citlali informed Tlapo of the situation, asking them to intervene if her suspicions were true. Indeed, Montluson had nefarious intentions and Grudoc, his Fatui contact, tried to collapse the space they were in with explosives. With the Traveler's help, the two were able to escape the collapsing space and found Tlapo and other Iktomisaurs restraining Montluson, and she agreed to let Allier interview her. She also realized Tlapo's intentions and conceded that he had been able to give her a friend she wanted after Hutizilin's death. The following day, the Traveler went to Inazuma to collect the two novels she wanted — the Shogun Almighty: Reborn as Raiden With Unlimited Power and "Pretty Please, Kitsune Guuji?" Limited Deluxe Edition, and left them outside her home with a note. She received the novels, although it was implied she was reluctant to read them and instead put them on a tidied shelf.^[22]

Leyla informed Citlali of his discoveries, resulting in her arriving at Easybreeze Holiday Resort in order to weed out Enjou. Learning that he was part of the Abyss Order and that the Traveler had run-ins with him before, the two worked together to find the Mare Jivari before he could. They ran into an unusual space in which the Traveler was sent into Mare Jivari, leaving Citlali alone as Enjou arrived. She made an agreement with him, using a spell to attach part of her spirit to Enjou so she could communicate with them. Aware of the danger of the Bakunawa, she also gave them the Calamity of Eshu, which was vital into subduing the Bakunawa. Following its defeat, Enjou drove her spirit away, but she had feigned defeat and learned of his true motives. Before he ventured deeper into the forsaken land, she asked him to tell them of any discoveries he might find inside, or failing that, his real name. The Traveler then returned to her, where she told them that they were not prepared to explore further, as her mark on Enjou had disappeared when he went inside, promising to inform them of any new discoveries she would find.^[23]

During Nasha Town's annual trade expo, Citlali learned from Chasca that someone from her tribe was reportedly selling Wayob fragments and was compelled to personally see what was going on for herself. The seller, Nkrumah, was terrified to see her while Chasca reminded her of the expo's rules, which Citlali felt that she would have to handle the troublemaker herself. Paimon informed her that she and the Traveler were handling any disputes at the expo, and Citlali asked if they would try to stop her, stating that the Wayob were not for sale. Studying the fragments, she realized that they were actually fragments of a Wayob pillar that had long lost their power and asked Nkrumah how much he was paid to ship the fragments. She was shocked to learn how much they were paying him, but seeing that the fragments were powerless and the Traveler's kindness, she decided to drop the issue, but warned Nkrumah that he would be going straight to Biram after the expo was over.

Learning of a film adaptation of a light novel she was a fan of, Citlali travelled to Fontaine to see the premiere. She had originally reserved a hotel room near the Opera Epiclese, but unable to sleep well, she tried to find another accommodation but found that everywhere had been booked solid. She was walking along the road when she saw a help wanted sign, which had been placed by Sandrone as she needed someone to divert attention from the Gardes for her own purposes. Sandrone hired Citlali to handle the front desk, telling any curious passerby that the aquarium was not open. As Paimon called for someone, Citlali emerged from downstairs, tired and in her frilly pair of pajamas; when she realized that the Traveler and Paimon were present, she became horrified and ran back downstairs, completely flustered from the scene. Realizing that her regular outfit was still being laundered, she reluctantly went back upstairs and informed the two why she was in Fontaine. She then brought them to her boss, resulting in both sides being shocked and Sandrone asking Citlali to leave and attend to Xavier. While the Traveler was inquiring about Sandrone's activities, Citlali, noting that they were taking too long inside, started to become jealous and contemplated using an eavesdropping spell, but decided against it for the sake of her reputation. The two then came out, and the Traveler explained that the situation was complicated, telling her that Sandrone wanted to speak to her herself. Citlali was surprised to learn that her employer was a Fatui Harbinger, but still agreed to work with her, aware that not all of them were bad. Sandrone then left to go diving with the Traveler, leaving Citlali jealous as she felt that the Traveler wasn't taking care of her mental state.^[24]

When Sandrone and the Traveler returned from another "fishing" trip, Citlali informed them that the crew were still filming due to various mishaps and had been waiting for them to inform them of the development. As the crew came their way, they had to stuff Sandrone inside a box as there wasn't enough time for her to leave the room. After accepting her emotional side, Sandrone returned to Citlali and told her about the resentful lost souls. She explained to her that they were souls of various people that had been severed by Rene and Jakob; because this occurred before Neuvillette had absolved the people of Fontaine of their sins, they were not recognized by the Ley Lines, which Citlali realized was why she couldn't sense them. As the Traveler remarked on "cleaning up the tanks," Citlali took it as a private message between the two and dragged the Traveler with her to Hotel Debord for some drinks, becoming increasingly jealous of their relationship and to bolster herself up to track the souls down.^[25]

The following day, the group gathered for their mission while Paimon remarked that she had gotten notably drunk; she had ranted half an hour each about Ororon and work, then an hour about light novels before Paimon fell asleep afterwards. They made their way to the Tower of Ipsissimus, where they drained the water inside before Citlali initiated the ritual and summoned the severed souls. Once the souls were granted peace, they went to witness the premieres, where Citlali voted for "Great Detective Hurlock." During the subsequent party, Citlali was met by Lyney, Lynette and Freminet, who wanted to use Citlalin and Itzpapa for their show, referring to them as toys. Unable to get out of the situation, she spotted the Traveler and asked them to step in. Lynette, sensing their relationship from her observation skills, offered the two VIP tickets in a "super quiet" spot which she reluctantly accepted.^[26]

With the party concluded, Citlali returned to Natlan, where she received an invitation from Sandrone for a tea party outside her home. Sandrone had come to both thank her for her help in the festival and to apologize for the incident with Ineffa; to make amends, she gave her a collector's edition of her favorite genre, having learned it from the Traveler. When she learned that she had accompanied the Traveler to make the selection, Citlali became jealous again, stating that there wouldn't be a next time.

    • She and Huitzilin were from the same generation and were trained at the same time. When Huitzilin first started challenging her, they were not old enough to drink.
    • It was only after being friends for 40 years did Citlali realize that Huitzilin was aging, while she was not. That was when she began keeping track of her birthdays.
    • Huitzilin passed away before they'd been friends for 60 years. After turning 70 years old, Citlali began spending more time at home; Huitzilin's death likely was around the same time, punctuating for Citlali that she would outlive her entire generation.
      • Considering these factors, a reasonable estimate would be that Citlali began counting her birthdays when she was around 50, which would place her current age at approximately 250 years.
• Citlali has stated that she created her white Tzitzimitl, Citlalin, by binding her own Stella Fortuna, and that this makes the creature particularly excitable on Citlali's birthday.^[30] By specifying Citlalin, she implies that this is not the case with Itzpapa. However, the latter is likewise associated with "inauspicious stars" and with fate.^[31]

• Citlali is a Mexican given name derived from the Nahuatl word citlalli meaning "star."
• Itztli is a sharp-bladed instrument made of obsidian in Nahuatl.
• Her Tzitzimitl companions are named after the Tzitzimitl, which were celestial deities associated with stars in the Aztec Mythology.
  • Itzpapa is an abbreviation of the name of the Aztec goddess Ītzpāpālōtl, meaning "Obsidian Butterfly."
  • Citlalin is an alternative form of citlali, and means "star."
