Project Moongazer was a project conducted by the self-proclaimed Moongazers, a group of Dragon researchers on the Frost Moon from the time when the Heavenly Principles arrived in Teyvat. Its purpose was to ensure that the message once carried by the so-called Stellar Blackbody would continue to be transmitted into the universe.
History
Origins
Everything started when Ibni-Belum, the first Moongazer, received a signal from deep space. The researchers could not decipher its meaning, but Ibni-Belum believed it may have been sent by Nibelung, who had previously journeyed into the sea of stars. To recapture the signal, Ibni-Belum built the Eye of Ibni-Belum as a transceiver station.[1]
Another researcher, Ungien, believed the signal was not sent by Nibelung, but instead came from a mysterious creature beyond the stars. To prove his theory, he built Ungien's Circle and the Space Lifeform Capture Station to capture alien lifeforms.[2] Ibni-Belum later expelled Ungien from the research team as an oath breaker.[3]
Many years after Ibni-Belum's death, the Eye of Ibni-Belum captured a second signal and its coordinates. Ungien piloted a spaceship named Moongazer toward those coordinates, despite the destination being too distant for the vessel to travel there and return safely.[4] During the journey, Ungien encountered an unknown creature later known as the "Stellar Blackbody" and chose to fuse with it so that it could deliver a message to the dragons.[4]
Years later, the cloaked Moongazer crashed into the space station. Ungien's wife, Maagees-Geti, was the first to enter the vessel and found only "a round, black, spiky creature" inside, whose data signature matched Ungien's.[4]
After awaking, the Stellar Blackbody, through Ungien as its host, passed its message on to the dragons:[5] The message, recorded in Moongazer's Engraving, came from a distant world and warned others against pitch-black annihilation, likely meaning the Abyss.[6] After delivering its message the creature/Ungien began to die.[4]
Maagees began studying the creature in her greenhouse and designated it "Containment Object-1." As it deteriorated, she extracted tissue from it and found black, variegated, filamentous ejecta with the characteristics of an information-bearing organism. She named the substance "Blackbody Matter."[7] Hoping to preserve what remained of Ungien, she later used an experimental technique to transform Containment Object-1 into a living being formed from Archaeolune Energy and Blackbody Matter.[8] This created Ungie, an artificial Kuuhenki of enormous size, though Ungien's consciousness was not preserved.[4]
Project Moongazer
Maagees-Geti was inspired by the message the Stellar Blackbody delivered and started Project Moongazer. Her goal was to sent the message back into space to inspire other alien civilizations as she had been.
With the help of Lusalim, her and Ungien's former student, she expanded the research on the Blackbody Matter. As some researchers feared that sending the signal into deep space would invite disaster from malicious aliens, Maagees and Lusalim started Project Lunar Veil.[9][10]
Their research into artificial life and consciousness led Lusalim to the idea to "engrave the full measure of a researcher's affections, desires, and ideals into data," and to create a new information-based life-form with it. This life-form could then be reborn from the data again and again. That way, the message of the Stellar Blackbody could be broadcast across the ages. After Nu-ur-Gestug mentioned Lusalim's plan to Xiuhcoatl, the Dragon King offered practical suggestions, which Nu-ur-Gestug later forwarded to Lusalim.[11]
Lusalim eventually succeeded in creating this life-form in the dragon-like being he called Nin-Kiggia and began raising her as his "daughter".[11][12]
In the time to come, Maagees-Geti began to deteriorate as she was using her own body to feed Ungie and eventually fell into a coma.[13] As she had not much time left, she expressed her final wish: to send the Stellar Blackbody's message out into space through the Eye of Ibni-Belum. Her wish was fulfilled and the transmission was sent.[14] She also requested that, after her death, Lusalim should perform the same technique she used on Ungie. Lusalim did so in accordance with her wishes, gaining experience he considered vital to Project Moongazer and its work of creating life.[15] Maagees lost her consciousness and became the "Mega Kuuuhenki" Maggie.[4]
Lusalim inherited the message from the Stellar Blackbody and understood why it was so important to Maagees. He vowed to bring Project Moongazer and Project Lunar Veil to fruition.[15] Going forth, he took what he did to create Nin-Kiggia to the next level and devised a plan to collate the ancient moon energy data of the Moongazers and merge them inside the moon's core. He pleaded with the Moon Goddesses to borrow the primordial power of creation and they agreed. With this power, the data of the past Moongazers was insured to be reborn in the forms of information-based life-forms so that the message of the Stellar Blackbody could be broadcast again and again.[10][16]
When the Heavenly Principles arrived and Lusalim's Lunar Veil Laboratory as well as his Lunar Veil generator were destroyed in an explosion,[4] Lusalim surrendered his research to the Heavenly Principles in order to protect the moon's facilities from further destruction.[10] He entrusted Project Moongazer, which was only one step away from completion, to Nin-Kiggia.[16] Its final step required Nin-Kiggia to merge the data into the moon's core[6] in which she succeeded.[10]
Legacy
The beings born from Project Moongazer would instinctively consume each other to acquire more data until their mission became clear, then return to the moon's core, open the Moongazer module in the Eye of Ibni-Belum, and transmit the message into the universe once more. According to Columbina, this cycle may have already happened more than once.[10]
One of the signals sent through this process reached the Traveler and their sibling, who did not know where it came from but were inspired by its contents.[10]
In the present, one such being is born as Eggie, a black kuuhenki created through the will of the moon.[10] She is found unconscious by Columbina in Maagees's Greenhouse and gradually awakens by merging with others of her own kind.[4] Although Eggie does not initially remember her mission, she gathers data from Terminals across the Frost Moon with the help of the Traveler and Paimon. Eventually, she receives the key from the moon's core, opens the Moongazer module in the Eye of Ibni-Belum, and transmits the Stellar Blackbody's message into the universe once more. Afterward, her energy is depleted and she returns to the cycle of life.[10]
