A traveler from another world who had their only kin taken away, forcing them to embark on a journey to find The Seven.
—In-game character attributes and profile page text
Don't lose faith in that which you have lost. In this new world, you will never be alone. Where you leave your footprints, and where you have yet to stride — your new world will unfold before you.
Welcome to a new world.
The world you once knew is but dust, and the wonders you knew but rubble. Though you should have your own world, and your own people — lamenting what is already lost...
Personality
In-game, the Traveler's personality is mostly shown through the dialogue options the player selects. Although multiple choices appear, these options usually represent two halves of the same sentence—either the first option is the beginning and the second completes it, or each choice is a continuation of the other.
In official illustrations (e.g. TPRGT Artworks, Hangout Events) and dialogue variations, differences between Aether and Lumine's personalities can also be seen. At times, the twins express slightly different opinions in conversations, such as when Paimon asks which slime they like the most. Aether responds that he prefers Pyro Slimes for their warmth during winter, while Lumine says she prefers Cryo Slimes for their cooling effect in summer. Although both responses are practical in nature, they reflect subtle differences in how each twin approaches situations, while still maintaining similar overall personalities.[1]
Their personality can range from stoic, confident, humble, and helpful to boastful, lazy, short-tempered, and at times unserious, playful, or humorous. Regardless of the player's choices, the Traveler is generally well-liked by many characters throughout the story. Additionally, there are instances where only a single dialogue option is provided, or where different dialogue choices lead to similar responses. These moments offer clearer insight into the Traveler's more consistent personality traits, independent of player selection. They are, for example, observed by Paimon as not believing the gods are any more worthy of unearned respect than mortal inhabitants of Teyvat. They also are pointedly uninterested in getting involved with each nation's troubles and primarily only concern themselves with finding out their sibling's whereabouts. Their response to Morax's "death" was initially to simply leave, both to avoid suspicion and seemingly a level of apathy considering the circumstances of their arrival on the world.
This trend continues into Inazuma, where the Traveler initially denies aid to the rebellion and refuses to take sides, interested only in meeting with the Raiden Shogun. The Traveler is visibly frustrated, not wanting to meddle in the country's affairs or get involved with anyone, even for a task as simple as delivering a letter. Yet despite this hesitation to get involved, they are ultimately a compassionate person, eventually choosing to aid the resistance against the Shogun's injustice after seeing the circumstances of each situation particularly at the prodding of Kamisato Ayaka and Thoma. Later on in Sumeru, they later help free Lesser Lord Kusanali from the sages of the Sumeru Akademiya after learning of her plight. Despite their slight indifference to Teyvat's conflicts, they greatly cherish every bond they create with the people. When talking with Columbina on the Moon they admitted that they see Teyvat as home.[2] Arlecchino also believes that the Traveler is incapable of performing intentionally malevolent acts.[3] However, the Traveler themselves seems to doubt that they're the "hero" that others see them as, to the point of admitting that the reasons for their journey across Teyvat aren't all completely selfless.[4]
Despite their compassion, they are ultimately willing to pass judgment on their enemies. The Traveler may optionally threaten to severely injure Lunja's men and bring Trofin Snezhevich to his demise, and are entirely responsible for the destruction of the Tanit tribe. Despite this, they don't enjoy the idea of killing or making others suffer, trying to end their enemies as painlessly as possible and if there is no other solution.
Although they typically remain stoic, the Traveler is capable of great anger whenever their loved ones or innocents are harmed. When Teppei and multiple soldiers of the resistance died due to the Fatui's Delusions, the Traveler went alone to the factory, determined to destroy it, ultimately falling for Scaramouche's provocations and trap. This is also seen during the samsara cycle, where Paimon notices that they attacked Dunyarzad's aggressors out of frustration for being too late to help her.[5] The Traveler openly expresses hatred toward Il Dottore. When Columbina steps into the beam meant to return her home, Dottore ambushes her. After manipulating history through “variables" and creating a false moon using Hyperborean knowledge, he seizes the power of all three moons and freezes time, leaving only the Traveler able to move. The Traveler confronts him, attempting several times to strike Dottore's head in half, though he blocks each attack.[6] The Traveler also shows clear hostility toward him,[7][4] even stabbing him from behind at the first opportunity.[2]
The Traveler repeatedly demonstrates a willingness to risk themselves to protect others. In Inazuma, the Traveler intervened in Thoma's seizure of his Pyro Vision in the Vision Hunt Ceremony, recovering his Vision from the Raiden Shogun. In Fontaine when Navia fell into the Primordial Sea, the Traveler immediately jumped after her, prioritizing her safety over their own.[8] In Liyue, when Hu Tao was about to cross into the Death Realm during a ritual, the Traveler intervened just in time, reassured her with a smile, convincing her to return by reminding her that everyone is waiting for her.[9] They are also consistently seen protecting Paimon during moments of danger. On several occasions, before the Traveler moves in for a finishing blow, they make sure that Paimon is safely hidden away.
While they frequently tease her the Traveler has a very strong bond with Paimon, with her being constantly at their side even in dangerous situations. When the Traveler was reviving a past experience of their sibling they admitted they missed having Paimon around and hugged her and expressed gratitude at having her as a partner after they woke up. After returning from the Night Kingdom with Mavuika the two ran into each other for a hug, happy for their victory and the Traveler being fine. Following their arrival in Sneznhaya the Traveler showed great concern over her sudden health problems and prioritized making sure she was okay. When trapped in the theater for several days (although it was just a few hours in the real world) the Traveler frequently thought about her, telling Vodyanitsa what Paimon meant to them and promised themselves to try to contain the emotion when preparing to see how she was doing. The news that the Jester had taken Paimon to a Fatui facility was enough for them to go there intending to retrieve her with Odette, attacking anyone who stood in their way. When the Ruler of Death Ronova tried to take an unconscious Paimon back to Celestia the Traveler was horrified of nearly failing to intercept Ronova's energy blast. Their care for Paimon was enough that when the Shade stated she would take Paimon a next time the Traveler was blinded by rage and released their elemental powers, relentlessly attacking the goddess with full intent to kill her. Following the battle the Traveler ran to a waking Paimon and hugged her while sobbing.
The Traveler does not appear to be very talkative, with several characters noting that they are not very fond of speaking or starting conversations. Though Shikanoin Heizou once joked about Paimon serving as the Traveler's "voice," the Traveler does indeed prefer having Paimon speak on their behalf. In quests beginning from Song of the Welkin Moon however, the Traveler somewhat begins to become more talkative.
The Traveler has a playful and teasing side, especially toward Paimon, whom they often give nicknames that she sometimes dislikes. This teasing extends to other friends as well. For example, they jokingly offered to prepare a whole feast of desserts for Wanderer, despite knowing he dislikes sweets, prompting his bemused reaction.[10] The Traveler also teases other companions, such as Citlali, showing this side of their personality consistently across interactions.
The Traveler can use expressions to influence others, often making an upset or pitiful face to persuade them. This is seen in interactions with Momoyo,[11] where multiple options allow the Traveler to adopt increasingly pitiful expressions, though they do not always succeed. In other cases, this tactic can convince the other character to listen or engage despite initial resistance.
Due to their experiences with the Fatui and the Abyss Order, the Traveler is immediately on guard at the mere mention of them. Despite that, the Traveler has also shown the capacity to express sympathy toward enemies under certain circumstances. The Traveler is shown to be friendly to a degree to those that respect them, such as Tartaglia, though remains wary toward him. Although initially friendly with Lyney and Lynette, their friendship was damaged after they failed to inform the Traveler that they were Fatui operatives from the House of the Hearth (as they knew of their interactions with them). Eventually, after some apologizing from Lyney, the Traveler reconciles with them and subsequently maintains a good relationship with Arlecchino and the House of the Hearth. Though initially wary of Capitano and Sandrone, the Traveler eventually respected both of them and they even joked about the technology fight between the two "genius" inventors, Aino and Sandrone.[12]
They also show significant concern for their sibling, as their initial goal was to find them and get answers from Asmoday who sealed them away. Upon reuniting with their sibling, the Traveler was more concerned with returning home with their sibling as opposed to their role as the Abyss Order's leader or their war with the Heavenly Principles. Despite their position with the Abyss, they still miss them dearly, and continue to follow their instructions in seeing the world for themselves. Even after learning the full truth of the sibling's actions are driven by regret of failing to protect Khaenri'ah at its greatest hour of need, the Traveler remained saddened that they would choose to revive the nation over their familial relationship, showing a degree of selfishness.
The Traveler's attachment to their sibling has clouded their perception, as they readily believed an imposter despite subtle hints point out the differences. This led the Traveler to unwittingly help the imposter breach the Moon Marrow's secure location, and it being stolen by Vilemina. The Traveler eventually came to realize their folly, and admitted that they want to believe the phantom in front of them was their true sibling, having enjoyed their "reunion" and adventures, but resolved to cut down the imposter. The Traveler also showed their responsibility by admitting their part to Lauma of the Moon Marrow's theft, becoming increasingly guilt-ridden as they were being praised for their past deeds as they struggle to confess.
Appearance
Aether uses the medium male model, and Lumine uses the medium female model. Both siblings have blonde hair, fiery-gold eyes, and pale skin. During their fight with Asmoday, both siblings had yellow wings.
Aether's hair is a more saturated color and very long, while Lumine's hair is paler and chin-length except for two locks of shoulder-length hair framing her face. Lumine also has two light-blue Inteyvat flowers pinned on the right of her head and two pale blue feathers tucked at the left.

Character Story 1
A boy and a girl stood amidst the tumult, under an unfamiliar sky.
You were a pair of traveling twins, passing through countless worlds during your journey.
Descending upon a continent named Teyvat, you hoped that you would be able to enjoy your time here.
But as you awoke among the falling stars, you saw the world in turmoil, a cataclysm raging across the land...
You sought to leave this place and move on to the next world, but then an unknown god stood before you, barring the way.
This deity was spotless, floating over a world of chaos.
Looking down on you.
The god took your only kin away, and you were sealed and cast into a deep slumber filled with nightmares...
When you reawakened, the world was changed.
The flames of war raged no longer, and nothing was left that looked familiar.
How long had you been asleep? You had no answers.
Thus, you began a lonely journey, seeking the deity that you had once laid eyes upon...
Character Story 2
Song of the Dragon and Freedom
After that, you met Paimon, and wandered together for some time.
You learned that this world has seven deities who rule the seven nations as the Seven Archons.
Your first stop was the free city of wine and song, Mondstadt, a city built by the Anemo Archon.
As you stepped into Mondstadt as an outlander, it was, as the other nations were, beset on both sides by non-human and human threats.
The non-human threat was comprised of the confederacy known as the Abyss Order.
The human threat, on the other hand stemmed, from the ambition of the Tsaritsa, god of Snezhnaya.
The Abyss Order had corrupted an ally of the Anemo Archon, the Dragon of the East of the Four Winds of Mondstadt.
The envoys of Snezhnaya, for their part, used this opposition to the Abyss as an excuse to put pressure on Mondstadt.
These threats from without and within caused the return of the Anemo Archon, who took on the form of a bard and joined you in your journey to save the dragon.
Yet there was something then that you did not see — for as the dragon fell to the Abyss, a certain figure had been reflected in its eyes...
The one who rules the Abyss.

Character Story 3
Though you made no promises, though it was an "agreement" the other party made one-sidedly,
You nonetheless set out on a sojourn across the Seven Nations to reach "the journey's end."
It would be a stretch to call this a pleasant path — as your feet took you forward, you witnessed and were pulled into the crises each nation faced...
Perhaps this is no coincidence. Perhaps some tremendous tremor deeper beneath the world is to blame for the waves of catastrophe.
The Tsaritsa's plan to collect the Gnoses persists apace, while the terrifying force corrupting the world awaits opportunities to strike.
And the Abyss Order, the organization led by your own flesh and blood...
From the Loom of Fate operational launch to the Atlas of the New World's completion, you know deep down that their actions are changing the fate of this world.
As you gradually understand said world, you have also come to understand the things your (sister/
But this has not made your journey any easier, nor your footsteps lighter. That was not what you expected at first.

Vision
The Outlander Who Caught the Wind
When faced with circumstances that they cannot control, humans often bemoan their powerlessness.
But if a person is found to have surpassing ambition even as their life reaches such a desperate turning point, then the gods would look upon them with favor.
This favor is the Vision, an external magical focus given to those who have been acknowledged by the gods which they can use to channel elemental power.
Celestia is the realm of the gods, and the wielders of Visions walk the earth below. When they depart from this world, the chosen will ascend.
After coming to this world, you often hear people speak of such things.
You, for your part, can never receive a Vision, for an alien lifeform does not belong...
Is it wise to allow a moment's ambition to dominate one's entire life?
You have needed to consider many such thought-provoking questions, ones that require lengthy consideration, during your journey through many worlds...

Trivia
- No default name is given for the Traveler at the start of the game. Their real name, Aether (male) or Lumine (female), was first determined through the name the Traveler calls their sibling by in the opening cutscene. Later, during Archon Quest Chapter I: Act IV - We Will Be Reunited, their sibling calls the Traveler by their real name regardless of the name the player chose. Within Caribert's memory during Archon Quest Chapter IV: Act VI - Bedtime Story, it's revealed that the twins are the only ones to use these names for each other.
- The Traveler's Character Details foreshadow that they will eventually ascend to the seat of a god. The English text states, “The keeper is fading away; the creator has not yet come. But the world shall burn no more, for you shall ascend." The original Chinese is more specific, stating that the Traveler will “ascend to the seat of ‘the god'" (登上「神」之座), explicitly referring to a divine seat.
- Aether and Lumine are seen wielding a multitude of weapons, mostly Swords, across in-game cutscenes and official media. These weapons often differ from those that can be equipped by the player during standard gameplay:
- In the opening cutscene during Archon Quest Wanderer's Trail in Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind with Asmoday, they are briefly shown wielding white-and-gold swords. Aether's sword had a cruciform guard, and Lumine's sword had a crescent guard.[Note 4]
- They are shown wielding the Dull Blade in a majority of cutscenes introduced before Version 5.0.
- They are shown wielding the Silver Sword in most cutscenes during Archon Quest Chapter I, and the ascended version in both their character cards and portraits. They briefly wield it once again whilst fighting against Marana's Avatar during the Sumeru World Quest series, Aranyaka.
- They are briefly shown wielding the Sword of Narzissenkreuz at several points during the Fontaine World Quest series, In the Wake of Narcissus.
- They are shown wielding the Prototype Rancour in all cutscenes and Quest Domains introduced during and after Version 5.0.[Note 5]
- They are shown wielding the Exaiphanes Blade in all cutscenes and Quest Domains during and after Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act I - Everwinter Without Mercy.
- During their travels in Snezhnaya, the Traveler acquires an assortment of energy-based Firearms and elemental frag crystals provided by the Eye of Graeae for use in traversing the Shadow Realm.[Note 6]
- It has been canonically stated that the Traveler owns a Silver Sword,[13] the Frostmoon Scions' relic Moonweaver's Dawn (post-Echoes of an Unfinished Past), and the Sword of Narzissenkreuz in The Night the Moon Returns Home (post-Rowboat's Wake.)
- The Traveler is currently the only playable character who:
- Does not have a Utility Passive.
- Have their Story entries unlocked by completing certain Archon Quests due to the lack of their Friendship Level value.
- Does not appear in the Character Archive at all.
- Requires Memories or Blazing Flint Ores for their own Constellation levels from gameplay progression instead of Stella Fortuna for other characters that are obtained from Wishing.
- The Traveler and the Wonderland Manekin are currently the only playable characters who:
- Do not have Friendship Level value.
- List their own element as "Vision: None" in profile regardless of their current elemental alignment. Other playable characters who do not use Vision list their elemental apparatus (in place of "Vision") and their own elements, being Gnoses for Archons, "Ancient Dragon's Authority" for Neuvillette, the "The Seven-Shifting Serpent" for Skirk, the "Tri-Lunar Convergence" for Columbina and the Moon Wheel for most Nod-Krai characters.
- Uses different means from other characters for their Ascension.
- Ascending the Traveler requires Brilliant Diamond items, which are only obtainable through Adventure Rank rewards, in place of elemental Ascension Gems.
- Ascending Manekins does not require any resource at all, unlike that of other characters, only requiring reaching Wonderland Level 10 to ascend beyond Level 20.
- Whose Wish artwork cannot be viewed from the Character Archive.
- The artworks of the Travelers can only be seen through their card art and Imaginarium Theater credits, while the artwork of Manekins can only be seen from their Talent Demo menus.
- Though the Traveler does not possess a Vision, they are still able to use the power of the seven elements by resonating with Statues of The Seven, and do not require the respective Archon's permission to do so. For gameplay purposes, the player must use a Statue of The Seven of the corresponding nation each time they wish to switch the Traveler to a different element.
- Various pieces and accessories across the Traveler's clothing will glow with the color of the element they are resonating with: teal for Anemo, yellow for Geo, purple for Electro, green for Dendro, blue for Hydro, orange for Pyro and light blue for Cryo. When unaffiliated with an element, those parts of their clothing instead take on a dull, black color. In the opening cutscene with Asmoday, both siblings' clothing will glow white. The Traveler's Sibling's clothing glows white in their present-day appearances, but the Traveler's will match their resonated element.
- In lore, the Traveler can access any previous element they've resonated with at will without a Statue of the Seven present, and even multiple elements simultaneously. Currently, they are unable to do so in normal gameplay. Chronological instances include the following;
- Archon Quest Chapter I: Act III - A New Star Approaches, where the they use both Anemo and Geo while fighting against Childe in the Golden House.
- Archon Quest Chapter III: Act V - Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises, in which they use Palm Vortex against a barrier in Nahida's consciousness.
- Navia's Story Quest, Rosa Multiflora Chapter: Act I - Braving the Tides Together, where they use the power of Geo to save Poisson after previously being resonated with Hydro.
- Archon Quest Chapter V: Act I - Flowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn, as they demonstrate to Kachina their use of Electro, Hydro, and Anemo in front of a Statue of The Seven.
- Archon Quest Chapter V: Act Interlude - All Fires Fuel the Flame, when they use the power of Anemo to protect Iansan from Ocotlan.
- Archon Quest Chapter V: Act VI - A Space and Time for You, when they protect Direidyth and Paimon with a Geo barrier.
- Skirk's Story Quest, Crystallina Chapter: Act I - Whispers Betwixt Stars and Night, where they wield Anemo, Hydro and their remaining elements while training with Skirk in the Abyss.
- Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Prelude - The Journey Home, where they use the power of Anemo to protect themselves and Paimon from lethal barriers summoned by The Eleventh Lord.
- Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Act I - A Dance of Snowy Tides and Hoarfrost Groves, where they switch to Hydro while infiltrating the Kuuvahki Experimental Design Bureau with Lauma and Jahoda.[Note 7]
- Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Act III - A Nation That Doesn't Exist, where they use the power of Geo to escape the Crimson Moon domain alongside Paimon and Columbina.
- Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Act IV - An Elegy for Faded Moonlight, where they use the power of Hydro while battling against Rerir.[Note 7]
- Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Act VI - Melting Moonlight in the Morning Mist, where they use the powers of Pyro, Electro and Hydro consecutively while battling against Il Dottore.
- Sunny Summer Fontinalia: Act III - Those We Have Kept, where they swap to Electro whilst exploring the Tower of Gestalt alongside Sandrone and Citlali.[Note 7]
- Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act I - Everwinter Without Mercy, where they use the power of Geo to assist Odette in escaping the caves of Svetloledovka.
- Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act II - Wraith's Nocturne, where they use the powers of Anemo, Pyro and Geo whilst battling against Ronova within The Korolevskiy Theater. In the same quest, they later wield the powers of Electro and Cryo simultaneously, followed by Geo, Anemo and Pyro during their rematch against Ronova inside the Armory Palace within Glupov.
- During those quick-swaps, the Traveler's gems immediately switch to the relevant element's color, and does so regardless of the Traveler's current elemental alignment.
- Starting in Version 2.0, pre-rendered cutscenes and Hangout Memories usually have the Traveler's element match the region's element instead of the player's current Traveler alignment.
- As of Version 7.0, the Traveler has yet to quick swap to the Dendro element in cutscenes outside of quests based in Sumeru.
- Pyro is the only element the Traveler was unable to resonate with upon first arriving in Natlan. For this reason, art and cutscenes featuring the Traveler in Natlan portray them resonated with Hydro, obtained in the previous region of Fontaine, until Where All Hopes Lie in Chapter V: Act V - Incandescent Ode of Resurrection, where Yohualtehcutin grants the Traveler the Pyro element along with special Constellations to aid in defeating the Lord of Eroded Primal Fire. Afterwards, the Traveler can resonate with Pyro normally via Natlan's Statues of the Seven, and additionally the Throne of Primal Fire, just like other elements.
- Similarly, the Traveler does not resonate with a new element upon arriving in Nod-Krai or interacting with a Statue of the New Moon, as Nod-Krai, despite being in the southernmost regions of Snezhnaya, does not represent a conventional element like the other nations of Teyvat. Much like Natlan, art and cutscenes featuring the Traveler in Nod-Krai typically portray them resonated with their most recent element of Pyro.
- The Traveler and Paimon are the only characters whose heads are used as menu icons in-game. The Traveler's icon represents the Character Menu, while Paimon's icon represents the Paimon Menu.
- The Traveler is one of the characters with ornaments that glow. While wearing their default outfit, Rising Star, when the Traveler's Elemental Burst is ready, various parts of their outfit will glow the way other characters' non-Vision gems glow along with their Visions. On Aether, these parts are his chest plate, the wrist joints of his gauntlets, arrow shaped areas on his kneecap guards, two diamonds attached one to each half of his cape, two accents in his shoulder guard and two orbs, one hanging off the end of his scarf, the other in his earring. On Lumine, the glowing parts are her chest plate, the wrist joints of her gauntlets, the diamond at the top of each of her boots, an oval on her waist at the back of her dress, the diamond at the end of each tail on her scarf, and the stem in each Inteyvat flower in her hair. These parts change color based on the element (or lack thereof) with which the player's Traveler is currently resonating.
- The Traveler has no object that appears to be a Vision while wearing their default outfit, Rising Star, but when switching to the Traveler when their Elemental Burst is ready, the projected elemental symbol that is typically seen over other characters' Visions is seen over their chest plate.
- In the Traveler's Chinese official introduction, as well as the first official artbook, their profile's Constellation parameter reads 命之座 (伪) "Constellation of Life (Pseudo)", which is not found on any other character's profile.[14] In-game, the Traveler's Constellation parameter is named the same as everyone else's.
- Despite their youthful appearance, the Traveler descended on Teyvat five hundred years ago and had already been traveling between different worlds thousands of years earlier[15] for an unknown amount of time before that, making them older than they look. In a developer video regarding Azhdaha's design, one developer mentions that "the Traveler's life span is by no means short."[16] While talking with Citlali about outliving others during her Tribal Chronicles, the Traveler states that not only are they much older than they look, but would likely outlive her as well.[17] A running gag in the game features the Traveler hoping to drink alcohol only to be rebuffed, probably on account of their youthful appearance.[18][19][20] On other occasions, the Traveler voluntarily rejects alcohol.[21][22] Voiceover lines with Paimon indicate, however, that the Traveler thinks and acts in a manner befitting a mature adult.
- Conversations between the Traveler and Dottore make further reference to their long lifespan, with the Doctor musing on whether the Traveler might have difficulty "understanding" humans due to their age affecting their perception of time, and further implying that most mortal humans would have difficulty comprehending the lengths of time that the Traveler has experienced for themselves, something to which the Traveler offers no disagreement or protest.
- During Like a Triumphant Hero, Nabiya fortune-tells the Traveler's health prospects, discovering that they will live again for tens of thousands of years more. If the other option is chosen, it is revealed that, tied to the issue of his lifespan, it seems that many people will ultimately end up falling in love with the Traveler.
- In both dialogue options, Nabiya remains incredulous about her reading and comes to the conclusion that there must be some sort of mistake. However, Paimon thinks this is likely the most accurate fortune-telling Nabiya has ever done. This could allude to the fact that Paimon is perfectly aware that the Traveler is much older than they appear, despite their youthful appearance.
- It is alluded through an ambiguous narrator that the twins had been wandering for so long in the sea of stars that they bore "the weight of an exile" and "a journey so long that numbers had lost their meaning." [23]
- Thousands of years ago, the spaceship of the twins flew over the skies of Teyvat, but left soon afterwards.[24] Later, it is revealed that the Traveler and sibling had already been wandering the sea of stars in their spaceship for a very long time when they received a message from Ninnin (or one of the previous Moongazer's).
- Considering these factors, a reasonable estimate would be that the twins could be several thousand years old, since the message was sent in the era known as 'Old World', more than 5,000 years ago, before the Heavenly Principles had even reached Teyvat.[25]
- Zhongli seems aware that even his own lifespan is insignificant compared to that of the Traveler, to the point that he expresses the desire for them to remember Teyvat should they decide to leave for another world. Even if something untoward were to happen to Teyvat, the Traveler's memory would serve as a record that they existed.[26]
- At the end of Project Moongazer an old message sent by the Traveler and their sibling (with the voice depending on which twin is chosen by the player) is unlocked as the answer to the message that was sent by the Dragons in an attempt to reach their king Nibelung during his travels across the universe, with the message saying the twins have already been traveling for a long time. This makes the Traveler and their sibling older than any human civilization that ever existes in Teyvat.
- As such, a select few characters are aware the Traveler comes from outside Teyvat:
- Barbatos, Morax, Beelzebul, Buer, and Haborym are aware of the Traveler's origins, likely due to their status as part of The Seven, though Barbatos had to be explicitly informed by Paimon of this as he was initially unaware. The Tsaritsa is also likely aware of this, as Buer was able to locate Fatui records categorising the Traveler as one of the Descenders.
- Neuvillette is aware of the Traveler's origins, likely due to being one of the Seven Sovereigns and their shared experiences of being outsiders to Fontaine.[30][31]
- Columbina is aware of the Traveler's origins, owing to her status as the reborn Moon Goddess. Using the power of the Moon Marrow, she revealed that their sibling somehow appeared outside their spaceship when it crashed in Nod-Krai about five hundred years ago.[32]
- Arlecchino and Sandrone clarify that the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, which Columbina once was, are aware of the Traveler's status as the Fourth Descender.[33]
- Fischl[34] and Kamisato Ayato[35] are somehow able to determine this without any apparent logic.
- Mona determines this through her astrology.[36]
- Albedo compares himself similarly to the Traveler, while also discerning this through their ability to use multiple elements without a Vision.
- Similarly to Albedo, Kaedehara Kazuha also notes that the Traveler is capable of using multiple elements without a Vision, while also commenting to them that they have an "incredibly complex" smell that he compares to a mysterious being.[37]
- Xinyan also knows that the Traveler is not from this world. Based on how she talks about this fact, it seems that the Traveler has deliberately told her about their origin.[38]
- Ganyu has at least been able to clue in that the Traveler is different from other people of Teyvat, viewing them as something not exactly human, similar to herself.[39]
- Aloy was told by the Traveler that they also aren't from this world, and that they stayed to look for their sibling.[40]
- The Traveler reveals this to Nilou, Navia, Kirara, and the Wanderer at the end of ‘'Summertide Scales and Tales by stating that they have “traversed many worlds" while giving Durin their blessing. However, as a Fatui Harbinger, the Wanderer was already aware that both the Traveler and their sibling came from outside Teyvat prior to this revelation.[41][42]
- Through fortune-telling, Citlali determines this and the Traveler's status as a Descender.[43] Xilonen is also present at the event.
- When Lan Yan attempted to connect the Traveler to the Seven-and-Eight Gate Method array, the Ley Lines did not respond due to them not containing information on the Traveler, a revelation that surprised Lan Yan. Ningguang was present when this occurred.[44]
- Skirk is aware of the Traveler's origins as being beyond Teyvat like herself, in addition to her knowledge of their abyssal purification powers and the ability for them to use multiple elements without a Vision.[45]
- The Traveler disclosed to Lauma of their origins and status as a Descender while at the Frostmoon Enclave.[46]
- When Jahoda reported the "flying ship" phantom at Starsand Shoal, the Traveler and Paimon confirmed to her that this was the one the former came to Teyvat with. Varka, Durin, Albedo, Flins, and Nefer were also present.[47]
- In a confrontation between Mitya and Ronova during the afterlife sequence in The Korolevskiy Theater, Ronova directly addresses the Traveler as a Descender, a detail Mitya remembers upon waking up from the dream.[48][49] During the same sequence, Traveler also reveal their status as a Descender to Vodyanitsa and Ptashka, however it is unknown if this detail is retained after they awake.[48]
- According to Ronova, since the Traveler is a Descender, who is not bound by the rules of Teyvat, their death can only come through the most violent means, such as the direct destruction of their body or soul. For this reason, her power only allows her to temporarily separate their soul from their body, because the Ley Lines of Teyvat would not accept them.[50]
- The Traveler is a proficient cook and mixologist, as evidenced numerous times throughout their travels:
- The Traveler started mixology after being convinced by Luka during the Of Drink A-Dreaming event.
- They would later make drinks for the customers of The Flagship in order to obtain intelligence during a Banquet, with Nefer introducing them as a mixologist from Mondstadt.[51]
- They later made an array of drinks during the events of A Chat Over Fine Drinks, creating an array of drinks and later creating a more refined version after listening to their customers' feedback.
- The Traveler stepped in for Smiley Yanxiao after he burned himself, cooking Wangshu Inn's specialty dishes for guests during the immediate post-Lantern Rite season.[52]
- Escoffier remarks that the Traveler has some talent in cooking, due to them feeding Paimon frequently, though she states that they could still use some improvement.[53]
- The Traveler baked a cake for Durin during his first birthday.[54]
- The Traveler started mixology after being convinced by Luka during the Of Drink A-Dreaming event.
- In many occassions, the Traveler has demonstrated exceptional organizational skills, successfully transitioning from technical support to high-level management by operating a cinematic theme park and an aquarium.[55][56]In fact, the Traveler often ends up managing the logistics, booths, and security for major trade fairs.
- In the Of Ballads and Brews quest, they help manage a shop and its funds, ordering ingredients from merchants so that the sales profits can provide support to disadvantaged children and the elderly. Additionally, in the Alchemical Ascension event, they and Paimon end up managing a potion shop to promote alchemy.[57][58]
- In the quest A Commission From the Curatorium of Secrets, they end up actively collaborating with the Curatorium of Secrets to manage and coordinate the Nod-Krai Trade Expo.
- Every year, during the Lantern Rite, the Traveler finds themselves having to handle some important commission for the festival on behalf of an acquaintance or a friend, alongside their past support during the Sabzeruz Festival.[59]
- The Traveler has demonstrated remarkable skills as a camera operator, lighting specialist and editor for cinematic logistics and support. [60] [61] Furthermore, they are an accomplished photographer who regularly uses the Kamera and special prototypes on behalf of researchers, photographers, and artists across Teyvat. Thanks to their sharp eye, they also possess excellent visual coordination for framing and composition.[62][63]
- The Chinese version of the opening cutscene trailer is titled 空中荧火 "Luminescent Lights in the Aether", which incorporates both Aether and Lumine's default names.[64]
- According to the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean pronouns the twins use to address each other in the opening cutscene and in later interactions, Aether is the older twin and Lumine is the younger. The first reference to Aether being older in the English version is during Where the Moon Rises where the Traveler wonders to themselves what their "little sister/big brother" is doing at that moment. In the next quest Reunion Beneath the Moonlight, the sibling refers to the Traveler as "big bro/little sis."
- Scaramouche remarks that the Traveler possesses a "guardian complex" toward Teyvat, which he deems "misguided." During their confrontation, he questions what the world has ever done for the Traveler to make them so determined to protect it with such "zest and conviction." The Traveler only replies, "...You wouldn't understand," offering no explanation for their resolve.[65]
- In the quest "Welkin Moon's Homecoming," after all their adventures over time, the Traveler has come to consider Teyvat as their home. Even if they were to discover a different truth about Teyvat, or if the planet's appearance were to change, their feelings would remain completely unchanged.
- In the quest "Sinister Undercurrent," it is discovered that the Traveler had never been treated by Baizhu for any kind of illness. It remains unclear whether they are naturally immune or simply possess a far stronger constitution than an ordinary human.
- In a conversation with Durin, it is revealed that the Traveler keeps cats in their Serenitea Pot.[66]
- The Traveler is implied to be skilled at playing chess, or at least good enough to surprise Diluc.[67]
- As children, both the Traveler and their sibling had imaginary friends.[68]
- The Traveler likes rock 'n' roll.[69]
- In the Messily-Written Note found in Arama's house, the Traveler is compared to the "golden one" and Paimon to the "silver one," with the note stating, “The golden one is like a big sun and the silver one is like a little moon, gentle and bright..."[70] Similarly, Arayasa refers to them as “the colors of the sun and moon," reflecting their close friendship.[71]
- The Traveler appears to have an unusual affinity with Seelies. During the world quest World Quest: Echoes of a Forsaken Song they are able to hear a melancholic melody and understand every word of a song performed through an ancient instrument, despite never having heard the language before, while Paimon hears nothing at all. Additionally, in the “About Seelie" dialogue, the Traveler remarks that they feel “a certain sadness" whenever Seelies reach their treasures, a feeling they cannot explain and ultimately dismiss as their imagination.[72]
- The Traveler demonstrates an exceptionally high compatibility with Kuuvahki. During Nicole's compatibility test, they do not feel or react to the increasing intensity of the test, repeatedly responding that they feel nothing. Nicole is impressed by how much the Traveler can withstand, noting that "Even as a Descender, you can withstand far more than I imagined". She eventually reveals that her final attempt used five times the amount of Kuuvahki required. Nicole compares the Traveler's resistance to summoning a giant stone titan to arm-wrestle them without their arm moving an inch. As a result, she confirms that compatibility will not be an issue for the Traveler and approves them for the Kuuvahki transfusion.[73]
- While the nature of their original power is unknown the Traveler and their twin seem to possess a limitless ability to absorb any form of energy, with Columbina and Lauma comparing giving them the Eternal Moon Marrow to a drop of water falling into the ocean, also making it nearly impossible to detect. They are able to absorb vast quantity of Abyssal power and remain completely unfazed, something that shocked even Gods like Venti and Mavuika.
- The sibling could absorb enough Abyssal power that their presence alone allowed Khaenri'ah to make great progress in a short amount of time, with a sixth of how much they absorbed being enough to turn each of the Five Sinners in calamities that could threaten the existence of Teyvat.
- In World Quest Book of Esoteric Revelations, Canotila, a Melusine, describes the Traveler as "a monster that looks like it could swallow the whole world in a single bite." She states this is based on how Melusines can perceive things humans cannot see.
- Some characters perceive the Traveler as a royal figure, to which the Traveler responds ambiguously or hesitantly. Mary-Ann comments that the Traveler "look[s] like a prince/princess from a distant land," to which the Traveler responds only with "..." offering no clarification.[74] Liloupar refers to the Traveler as a "prince/princess in exile." The Traveler is given two response options: "I'm not." and "I am, but..." — the latter suggesting partial agreement.[75]
- It is claimed that the twins were the descendants of a glorious lost kingdom, bearing the weight of an entire world.[76][77]
- The Female Traveler's character introduction further alludes to their connection to a fallen homeland and lost civilization. Lumine's introduction describes her as someone whose homeland has been destroyed and whose former world has been reduced to dust, referring to her as the "last descendant" (亡国的末裔) of a fallen civilization. It also describes her as someone who was originally meant to possess her world and embrace its people.
- It is claimed that the twins were the descendants of a glorious lost kingdom, bearing the weight of an entire world.[76][77]
- The Inazuma Commission Archery Demonstration reveals that the Traveler is proficient in archery. However, because the Traveler only wields a sword in-game, they must rely on ranged Talents such as Starfell Sword to complete the commission.
- Beyond standard swordplay and unarmed martial arts, [78] the Traveler demonstrates expert proficiency in handling javelins and various polearms. Their versatility is further highlighted by their technical capability to effectively wield specialized long-range weaponry, including a Cryo rifle.[79][80] For instance, it is mentioned that they can handle a polearm well enough to train new recruits.[81]
- The twins seem to have different fighting styles and physical abilities from each other:
- When activating their Geo Elemental Burst, Aether forcefully strikes the ground with his fist, while Lumine executes a powerful ground kick. To stabilize and power up the vortex, Aether channels the wind using both hands, whereas Lumine channels the same ability using only a single hand.
- Perhaps due to his taller height, Aether possesses a slightly faster baseline speed for running and climbing compared to Lumine.
- Lumine exhibits greater physical strength during counterattacks, combined with faster execution speeds. Aether tends to be more reactive when executing dodges.
- Lumine possesses a slightly superior baseline swimming speed compared to Aether.
- The Traveler's voice-over line About Jugemu references the famous Rakugo story about a child named a very long name due to his parents' indecision.
- The Traveler's voice-over line About Tanuki has the traveler humming "Shojo Temple Tanuki" in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. In English, the traveler hums randomly.
- The Traveler and the Captain from Honkai Impact 3rd are both seen commenting on a video in the Character Trailer for Robin from Honkai: Star Rail, both of which are HoYoverse games.
- The Traveler's profile picture is shown to be a silhouette of Aether's in-game avatar. Likewise, the Captain's is shown to be a silhouette of Ai-chan.
- The Traveler is the first Ancient Name bearer to not be a native inhabitant of Natlan.[82]
- The Traveler and their Sibling, within the Gnostic influences of the Genshin storyline, appear to be based on an aeon syzygy; pairs of spiritual beings emanated by the true God who always come as one male and one female. Aeons embody chaos, viewed as a good thing by Gnosticism, and in true form the Traveler and their Sibling cause disruptions to the mechanistic order of the Heavenly Principles, who appears to be based on the Demiurge.

- Their blonde hair has been the basis of a few nicknames, such as Kayabuki Ikkei's "blond-haired outlander" and "Golden Whirlwind," Taliesin's "golden-haired (Traveler)," and Kichiboushi's "Yellow Fur" (shortened from "(Uncle/
Aunt) Yellow Fur"). In Sumeru, the Aranara give the Traveler the nickname "Golden Nara" presumably also in reference to their blonde hair. - The Traveler is not fond of such nicknames, going as far as to call Taliesin's (and Paimon's "Blondie") "terrible-sounding, non-consensual appellations."[106] They also disapproved of Kichiboushi's nickname, but tolerated it for the duration of Eight Locales Over Mountains and Seas.
- Teucer addresses them as "(Mr. Nice Guy/
Ms. Nice Lady)" throughout Monoceros Caeli Chapter: Act I - Mighty Cyclops' Adventure!, because despite having known the Traveler's identity the entire time, he forgot their name. - The Traveler and Paimon are sometimes called "the Guests of Tenshukaku" by Inazuman characters, such as Souka in the Fabulous Fungus Frenzy event.[107]
- Souka also referred to the Traveler as "Her Excellency's Hanamizaka tour confidante."[108]
- A prince/princess in exile (by Liloupar)

- Star Outlander (by Mualani)[109]

Etymology
- The English name "Aether" is the name of the fifth element in ancient and medieval science, which fills the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere.
- In Greek mythology, the god Aether was the personification and god of the clear upper sky which embodies the air that the gods breathe. The Greek word Aether, both modern and ancient Greek, also means sky.
- In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, his name is 空 "Sky, Air, Void." In Buddhism, this word is used to denote the concept of Śūnyatā, which has multiple meanings but generally relates to the lack of intrinsic, permanent existence or nature.
- In English, Lumine is of Latin origin and means "light."
- In the Chinese version, 荧 Yíng means "luminous" or "bright."
- In Japanese, her name is 蛍 Hotaru means "firefly."[Note 9]
- Their Constellation, Viator or Viatrix, are both Latin for "traveler." The terms are the masculine and feminine forms of the word.
- The Chinese name for their Constellation, 旅人 lǚrén, also means "traveler."
Notes
- ↑ For aesthetic purposes, the English version differs from the Chinese text.
The original CN text: 「…只要你拥有的高洁与善良不会改变,在新的天地,依然会有最好的伙伴与你同行。此处前方,此刻未来,皆是你的天地。」「欢迎来到世界。」
Literal translation: "...As long as your attitude of nobleness and kindness does not change, in the new world, there will always be best companions to travel with you. Where you are going ahead, and where your future lies — your new world will unfold before you." "Welcome to the world." - ↑ For aesthetic purposes, the English version differs from the Chinese text.
The original CN text: 「你的故国已经覆灭,宫城万顷也化作尘沙。你是本应该拥有世界,拥抱天地之人。但亡国的末裔啊,请不要悲叹这些逝去的时刻…」

But the last descendant of the subjugated civilization, please do not lament the lost moments..." - ↑ For aesthetic purposes, the English version differs from the Chinese text.
The original CN text: 维系者正在死去,创造者尚未到来。但世界不会再度灼烧,因为你将登上「神」之座。
Literal translation: The sustainer is passing away; the creator has not yet come. But the world shall burn no more, for you shall ascend to the seat of "the god." - ↑ While the Traveler chosen by the player loses their original sword to Asmoday, the opposite sibling retains their sword, as revealed during the events of We Will Be Reunited.
- ↑ In most Quest Domains following Version 5.0, the Traveler's sword will be temporarily switched to Prototype Rancour as part of a Trial build, regardless of which sword the Traveler has equipped in their standard build. The same is true for their elemental alignment and equipped Artifacts, which are also switched.
- ↑ The firearms provided by the Eye of Graeae are entirely separate from the Traveler's currently equipped Sword.
- ↑ 7.0 7.1 7.2 The Traveler is quick-swapped to this Element for the purposes of causing a specific Elemental Reaction.
- ↑ In Archon Quest Ending Note in Prologue: Act III - Song of the Dragon and Freedom, this title was localized as "Windborne Outlander."
