Summary

Chapter 00 Prologue

In Autumn 2015, a catastrophic Honkai eruption occurs in Dubai, prompting Schicksal to deploy its West Asia branch. The elite Valkyrie squad Phosdjinns (CN: "磷砂"; "Phosphorus Sand") is sent to the battlefield. The squad includes the hot-headed Captain Matilla, the caring Vice-Captain Zofia, and the anxious rookie Susannah.

As the team prepares for their mission, they are alerted to the presence of a new, powerful variant of the Honkai Emperor: Padishah (CN: "沙暴帝王"; "Sandstorm Emperor").[1] Ignoring Zofia's warnings about the Honkai Beast's strength, Matilla decides to confront it head-on. Just as the squad is about to engage, Durandal appears and instantly defeats the Padishah. With the threat abruptly ended, the Phosdjinns squad is then ordered to return to base.

At Schicksal HQ a few days later, Overseer Otto Apocalypse is praising Durandal's recent, incredible accomplishments of clearing all major global Honkai incidents over thirty days without rest. He then assigns a new, crucial mission to Rita Rossweisse: to travel to England and search for clues about the Second Divine Key[note 1], which has been linked to English mythology. When Otto asks Durandal what she wants as a reward for her outstanding service, she simply requests a vacation.

Chapter 01 Clues

The chapter begins with Durandal arriving in London for her vacation. While relaxing in Russell Square, she inadvertently joins a soccer game with some local teenagers, impressing them with her powerful kick. Rita appears and smoothly handles the situation. Despite Durandal insisting she is simply on a long-planned trip to England, Rita offers to act as her tour guide before needing to leave for her own mission. The two spend a pleasant day sightseeing at famous London landmarks, including the Sherlock Holmes Museum, Big Ben, and Borough Market, strengthening their bond.

Later, Rita proceeds to the British Museum for her official mission. She meets with the director, Catherine (CN: "凯瑟琳"; "Catherine"), who has been expecting her. Catherine leads Rita to the artifact Schicksal is investigating: a 6th-century Celtic manuscript. The mural depicts the well-known legend of King Arthur, his sword in the stone, and the Knights of the Round Table. Catherine explains that this story is a beloved piece of English history.

After the director leaves her to investigate, Rita muses that the clue to the Second Divine Key must lie within the mural's depiction of the "Sword in the Stone" or the "Round Table." Suddenly, she is interrupted by a strange, demonic-looking cat. Recognizing it as a threat, Rita prepares for battle as the small creature reveals its true nature, transforming into a large, monstrous cat-themed Honkai Beast, setting the stage for a fight.

Chapter 02 Apex Predator

Rita confronts the transformed Honkai Beast in the British Museum. A narrative overlay reveals the history of this creature, a cat named Stan. Once an ordinary cat, he endured a harsh life, cruel experiments, and fierce competition, ultimately being transformed by a mysterious organization into the "strongest, ultimate life form on this planet"—a sophisticated, man-made Honkai Beast.[2]

Rita, recognizing the immense power of her opponent, deploys her Fourth-Generation battlesuit, "Argent Knight: Artemis."[3] During their intense battle, the device on Stan's collar malfunctions, forcing him to revert to his normal cat form. Before escaping, he mentally introduces himself as Stan and vows to meet Rita again.

The commotion attracts Durandal to the scene. She arrives to find Rita with a minor scratch. In a moment of levity, it's revealed Durandal also has a bandaged hand from a previous, less dangerous cat encounter, leading her to humorously state she "understands" Rita's situation. On a more serious note, Rita explains her conclusion: the Honkai Beast was artificial, meaning someone is deliberately targeting Schicksal. Despite Durandal's offer to help, Rita insists on handling the investigation herself so that Durandal can enjoy her vacation.

Meanwhile, Stan reports back to his master, a masked woman. The woman praises Stan for pushing an S-Rank Valkyrie to her limits.[4] Stan boasts that he could have won with more time, and she promises to upgrade his limiter. The chapter reveals this attack was merely a "small test," with the woman promising the "real show is yet to come." The chapter concludes with Catherine, the museum director, calling Rita to offer her assistance with the investigation.

Chapter 03 Legends

Catherine and Rita delve into the legend of King Arthur. Catherine suggests the legend may not be a literal historical account but a metaphor, introducing the concept of Avalon as a place on the "other side of spacetime," reachable only by a holy sword that can sever space. She posits that the magician Merlin was a real, pivotal figure who initiated the entire legend and provides Rita with her extensive research on the topic.

While examining the wreckage of the destroyed artifact, Rita discovers a piece of Soulium (CN: "魂钢"; "Soul Steel"). In a holographic call with Otto Apocalypse, he reveals the Soulium is a Previous Era relic, and it contained some information on the Second Divine Key. He explains the Key was made from the Herrscher of the Void's core and can connect to other dimensions and explore the Sea of Quanta. Otto confirms Rita's theory: King Arthur's "holy sword" was likely the Divine Key, and the mythical Avalon is a bubble world (CN: "世界泡"; "world bubble") within the Sea of Quanta.[LIN 1] Understanding the mission's new dangers, Otto informs Rita that he has assigned her an assistant.

In the Phosdjinns squad's lounge. An ecstatic Mattila celebrates a transfer order from HQ, believing it to be a promotion for the entire squad to a more important battlefield and her personal stepping stone to becoming an S-rank Valkyrie. After excitedly calling Susannah out of the shower to share the news, Zofia reveals that the transfer is not for the squad, but for Susannah alone, leaving both Mattila and Susannah in shock.

Chapter 04 The Search

Susannah arrives to London, and after a clumsy and dizzying start at the airport, she has a comical and star-struck reunion with Durandal, who does not remember her from the Dubai incident due to not actually meeting up with her. Durandal quickly departs after being urgently recalled by HQ, leaving Susannah in Rita's care.

At their hotel, Susannah enthusiastically presents her advanced prospecting equipment, explaining that her family's background in gem-hunting[LIN 2] is why Otto chose her for a mission that requires finding something deep underground. Her excitement is immediately dampened when Rita presents her with a massive pile of research materials, revealing Susannah's aversion to reading.

To help with the research, Rita invites the museum director, Catherine, to join them. Catherine provides her expert knowledge on Arthurian legends, listing several key locations across England tied to King Arthur, such as his birthplace at Tintagel Castle[note 2], the site where he famously slew a giant, Mount Snowdon[note 3], and Glastonbury[note 4], which is considered the most likely location of Avalon. To narrow down the search, she ultimately points to Glastonbury Tor, near the Glastonbury fortress, as the most promising location, as it is now considered the most likely site of the entrance to the mythical Avalon and is closely linked to the elven-forged "holy sword" they seek.

The team—Rita, Susannah, and Catherine—then travels to the scenic Glastonbury Tor. As Susannah eagerly prepares her equipment, the scene cuts to the mysterious woman from before, Stan's owner. As she talks with an anonymous caller, it is revealed that she has been monitoring them, and their arrival at this location is precisely what she intended. Stating that the Valkyries have "taken the bait," she prepares to spring her trap.

Chapter 05 The Passage

The team arrives at Glastonbury Tor, where Susannah uses her prospecting equipment to search for the entrance to Avalon. While she works, Susannah and Catherine share a heartfelt moment. Catherine reveals her frail past and how her love for history gave her strength, expressing a desire to become a Valkyrie. Susannah, moved, promises to give her a tour of Schicksal HQ once the mission is over.

Susannah successfully locates a secret underground entrance. Rita opens the passage, revealing a stone slab inscribed with the Latin phrase, "HIC JACET ARTHURUS, REX QUONDAM, REXQUE FUTURUS"[note 5]. Despite Rita’s warnings about the danger, Catherine insists on accompanying them, with Susannah vowing to protect her. They descend deep into a vast, ancient cavern that Rita speculates could be a creation of the Previous Era. At the center of the chamber, they discover a sword embedded in a stone.

Catherine rushes forward and touches the sword, triggering a trap that seals a massive wall between them, separating Rita from Susannah and Catherine. The ambush is sprung. On one side, Rita is confronted by Stan, the enhanced Honkai Beast, who is eager for a rematch. On the other side, Susannah is surrounded by mysterious hooded soldiers. Vowing to protect Catherine and uphold the honor of the Phosdjinns Squad, Susannah engages the soldiers and swiftly defeats them.

However, as Susannah turns to reassure Catherine, she is met with the barrel of a gun. Catherine reveals her betrayal, apologizing to a shocked Susannah before shooting her. The chapter ends with Catherine standing over the fallen Valkyrie, coldly remarking that she will not be visiting Schicksal after all.

Chapter 06 Pawns

The chapter opens with the revelation that Catherine is a mole working for the World Serpent (CN: "世界蛇"; "World Serpent"). She reports to her superior, Jackal (CN: "胡狼"; "Jackal"), that Schicksal has fallen for their trap. Jackal notes that the Arthurian legends were merely myths based on the exploits of their "Sovereign."[LIN 3] Believing the mission a success and Rita as good as defeated, Jackal ruthlessly shoots Catherine to ensure her "loyalty" through death, dismissively calling her a disposable pawn.

Jackal reveals that the Second Divine Key has remained hidden in plain sight for eons because it possesses the ability to control space, rendering it impossible to detect from the outside.[5] However, "Catherine" stands back up, revealing the lethal shot was merely a performance. The figure transforms into Otto Apocalypse, who reveals he had suspected a trap from the moment the Soul Steel was discovered. A flashback shows that Otto found the coincidental string of clues suspicious and decided to "beat them at their own game." He handpicked Susannah for the mission because her prospecting skills were necessary, but her airheaded personality made her the perfect "sweet bait" to lower the enemy's guard. While the real Susannah was kept busy cleaning his private library at HQ, Otto used a state-of-the-art Soul Steel avatar to perfectly replicate her body, and used his acting to mimic her personality and mannerisms.

Afterward, the aftermath of Catherine's betrayal of Susannah is revealed, where "Susannah" gets back up, and using the power of the Divine Key Fenghuang Down, Otto-as-Susannah confirms that the real Catherine was a low-level pawn who held no knowledge of the Second Divine Key's location, so instead he extracts some of her DNA, using his Soul Steel avatar to transform into Catherine next, leading him to the situation he's currently in.

After explaining this, Otto cordially invites Jackal to Schicksal HQ to "consult" her on the Key, but she refuses and attempts to kill him again. Otto's Soul Steel body instantly regenerates, proving his current form is indestructible. The confrontation is monitored from a distance by a hidden sniper who prepares to intervene using the Third Divine Key to ensure Jackal's escape.

Lost In Translation

  1. Per usual, "World" is called "Universe" here when that's not the intended meaning
    Original Chinese: 以传说的角度来解读,亚瑟王的圣剑很可能是对空之键的一种描述,而阿瓦隆,则很可能是量子之海中的某个世界泡。
English Localization: King Arthur's Divine Sword may be how the ancient britons described the 2nd Divine Key. And this Avalon may be a Bubble Universe floating somewhere within the Sea of Quanta. We have learned something extremely valuable.
Correct Translation: Interpreting it from the perspective of the legend, it's highly likely that King Arthur's holy sword is a description of the Key of the Void, and Avalon is likely a bubble world within the Sea of Quanta.
  2. Susannah claims to be from the Middle East in this chapter, the English localization doesn't reflect that
    Original Chinese: 我远在中东的家族就是以勘探宝石为业,主教大人说我是最合适的人选!
English Localization: I came from a family of precious gem and mineral prospectors, miss Rita! I know what I'm doing! Lord Otto even said I'm the best girl for this job!
Correct Translation: My family, way back in the Middle East, is in the business of prospecting for gems. The Lord Overseer said I'm the most suitable candidate!
  3. The official English localization refers to the leader of World Serpent as "Sire," whereas the original text uses "Sovereign" (尊主), his official title within the organization.
    Original Chinese: 但圣剑的传说不过是以尊主的事迹为基础创作的神话故事罢了。
English Localization: But Schicksal didn't know that the legend of the sword was based on the deeds of our sire.
Correct Translation: However, the legend of the Sacred Sword is merely a fable spun from the exploits of the Sovereign.
