Pierro

Pierro, also known as "The Jester," is the Director of the Fatui and the leader of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. Born in Khaenri'ah, he was a royal mage who lived during the Cataclysm 500 years ago. After the fall of the kingdom, he soon made his way to Snezhnaya and partnered himself with the Tsaritsa, supporting her goal of overthrowing Celestia. He currently leads the Fatui and has personally spearheaded several of their major projects over the centuries.

Profile

Pierro, "The Jester," is the Director of the Fatui,^[1][5] and the very first member of the organization. He was the first person to ever become a Harbinger and currently serves as their leader.^[6] He has personally recruited several Harbingers, including Il Dottore,^[7] Scaramouche,^[8] and Signora.^[9]

Pierro has the ability to wield Electro elemental power.^[5]

Story

History

Pierro was born as a pure-blooded Khaenri'ahn in the decades prior to the Cataclysm.^[5] He served the Eclipse Dynasty as a royal mage of Khaenri'ah and lived with the Traveler's sibling for a time.^[8] During this time, he used technology in an attempt to pull something down from Celestia, which resulted in Paimon descending to Teyvat; Pierro presented her to Irmin, but the Vinster King was unimpressed, so Pierro had her live in his palace.^[5] Pierro paid little attention to her during their time together, as he was consumed by his enmity with Hroptatyr; he attempted to gain favor with Irmin, advising him against his usage of Abyssal power, but failed due to being less capable than Hroptatyr.^[10][5] Irmin's usage of Abyssal power ultimately lead to the Cataclysm,^[10] and when Celestia intervened in the nation to quell the disaster,^[10] Pierro was among the pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns cursed with immortality,^[11] gazing upon Ronova as she implanted the curse upon him.^[12] For this reason, he became embittered with the "foundational principles of this world" and joined the Tsaritsa's cause.^[10] During the third year of the Tsaritsa's reign, she established the Fatui under Pierro's leadership,^[13][10] and tasked them with suppressing separatist rebels in Port Belovodye.^[14]

Recruiting Other Harbingers

At some point, Pierro recruited Rosalyne-Kruzchka Lohefalter, who had become the infamous Crimson Witch of Flames, to join the Fatui. He gave her the name La Signora and bestowed her with a Cryo Delusion in order to suppress the intense flames flowing through her body.^[9]

400-450 years ago, Pierro went to the Great Red Sand in pursuit of rumors surrounding an expelled Sumeru Akademiya scholar there performing heretical acts. He found Zandik, who readily agreed to join the Fatui Harbingers after he expressed support for Zandik's goal of creating a god. Pierro proposed that Zandik take the title Il Dottore, or The Doctor, which Zandik found humorously ironic.^[7]

400 years ago, Pierro and Dottore had a hand in the event known as the Tatarasuna Mystery, where Dottore infiltrated the Mikage Furnace as a Fontaine mechanic by the name "Escher" to sabotage the nation per Pierro's order. After assassinating Niwa Hisahide, Dottore offered to introduce the Kabukimono to Pierro, believing that he could become their new comrade if he proved useful. Later on, Pierro encountered a disillusioned Kabukimono and recruited him to the Fatui, where he would later become Scaramouche, the Sixth Harbinger.^[8][15][16] Pierro would send Scaramouche on very important tasks, which also included trips into the Abyss,^[17] and for unknown reasons told Scaramouche about his history with the Traveler's sibling.^[8]

Over a decade ago, Pierro personally announced the Tsaritsa's decision to pardon Peruere for assassinating the Harbinger Crucabena, and appoint her as the new "Knave" of the Harbingers.^{[18][Note 1]} Shortly afterwards, in a private meeting, he informed Peruere, now named Arlecchino, that she was a descendant of Khaenri'ah's Crimson Moon Dynasty, a bloodline which Pierro—who had served the succeeding Eclipse Dynasty—believed had gone extinct.^[19][20]

When Tartaglia became a Harbinger and received his Delusion, Pierro was the one to pin it on him.^[13]

Shortly before the start of the Traveler's journey, Pierro held a meeting with the other Harbingers in which he outlined the Tsaritsa's plan to collect all the Gnoses. Pantalone was assigned oversight over financial arrangements while Sandrone was given charge of any "technical needs" that might arise for her colleagues.^[21]

Present

Before the events of Unreconciled Stars, Pierro sent Scaramouche to Liyue, where a strange dream-inducing meteorite shower prompted Scaramouche to investigate. While investigating a particularly large meteor that fell at Musk Reef, Scaramouche makes a discovery that causes him to learn about Teyvat's false sky. Believing that Pierro had foreseen the meteorite showers and the discovery he would make, Scaramouche leaves in an irritable mood, presumably to confront the senior Harbinger.^[22]

Pierro likely masterminded the Fatui's role in perpetuating Inazuma's civil war, as Scaramouche provokes the Traveler by claiming that he was "just here to follow orders" by overseeing their Delusion factory. In order to keep the two sides in a stalemate, the Fatui had Nathan infiltrate the Watatsumi Army,^[23] destroy the wards keeping the Tatarigami at bay, and spread life-draining Delusions among the Watatsumi Army.^[24] Meanwhile, Signora persuaded Hiiragi Shinsuke and Kujou Takayuki, two leaders of the Tri-Commission, to uphold the Vision Hunt Decree and Sakoku Decree while exempting the Fatui from their restrictions. However, during the events of Chapter II, Signora is slain by the Shogun after losing to the Traveler in a duel before the throne.^[25] Pierro appeared to genuinely mourn her death, putting an end to the other Harbingers' "foolish theatrics" before her funeral and later addressing the late Harbinger by her real name, Rosalyne.^[26]

After Columbina's departure from the Fatui, Pierro arrived in Nod-Krai as part of the Palestar Edict, which ordered her retrieval at all costs. On one occasion while overseeing the construction of the Kuuvahki Experimental Design Bureau, Pierro would stare at Celestia in fury, which was noticed by the three Shades who were holding a meeting at the time. Shortly afterwards, Pierro traveled to Nasha Town, where he declared on behalf of the Tsaritsa that "even the gods have their limits."^[12]

At some point after the events in Nod-Krai, Pierro decided walk around the southern regions of inland Snezhnaya where he reunited with Paimon. Recalling that her personality had not changed in an "era of insanity," he decided to save her. He revealed his identity to her, but not to the Traveler when they arrived, though he told them that they would meet again very soon.^[27] Upon learning she was held in Podvorye Restaurant, he personally went there to take her to the Armory Palace. He was affected by Ronova's curse of death when Mitya was about to conduct an experiment, but the curse of immortality she had placed on him centuries ago counteracted it, allowing to regain consciousness faster than the others and he stopped her from taking Paimon. The Shade left before the others regained consciousness, and Mitya suggested that the project be held on hold due to the Shade's threat to it, which he agreed with. Pierro revealed to the Traveler that the goal of Project Mistilteinn was to face the Heavenly Principles. He also told them that the Tsaritsa would likely want to meet with them in the foreseeable future, where she would give more clarity to their questions than he could.^[5]

It was only after I became a Harbinger that I finally learned the truth from The Jester. He expressed surprise that the Crimson Moon bloodline had not gone extinct, and that, in a strange twist of fate, the House of the Hearth had ended up in the hands of an orphan of that lineage once again. I cannot say what the future holds. I trust fate will give me an answer in time, and when it does, I'm prepared to do things my way, even if that means striking down fate with my own two hands.

Trivia

• Before his origins were confirmed, Pierro was hinted to be from Khaenri'ah based on his backstory in Mocking Mask and his star-shaped pupils, a feature shared by fellow Khaenri'ahns Kaeya and Dainsleif. Since then, all other characters with those pupils have also been affiliated with Khaenri'ah's Eclipse Dynasty.

Etymology

• In commedia dell'arte, a type of Italian theater, "Pierrot" is a sad clown, pining for love of Colombina (Columbina), who usually breaks his heart and leaves him for Arlecchino (Harlequin).
  • His name was adapted into Pierro to match the actual pronunciation of Pierrot.
  • His name could be a reference to Peter the Great, the first Emperor of Russia. In 1722, Peter introduced the Table of Ranks to reduce the importance of the hereditary nobility (boyars), which was now supposed to begin its career at the lowest rank, despite bearing the hereditary titles of princes.
• Pierro's Chinese alias (丑角) literally translates to "The Clown Role," which is a direct translation of the role of Pierro (sad clown). It can also by extension mean The Jester, The Comedian, The Fool, or The Buffoon.
