Pantalone

Last updated 2026-09-04

Pantalone, also known as "Regrator" and by his personal name Feofan Sergeyevich Veksel, is the Ninth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers and the director of Northland Bank. He is in charge of the financial affairs of Snezhnaya and his economic interventions have far-reaching effects throughout Teyvat. His ultimate goal is to seize control over the economy of the continent and end the financial monopoly of the gods.

Born in Snezhnaya over 400 years ago, he endured a harsh youth in poverty, an experience that came to inspire a deep-rooted resentement against the gods and Zhongli in particular. He was eventually sold as a lab rat to Dottore, though the two of them quickly became close-sided partners owing to their mutual sense of rejection from the world and contempt against the gods. After joining the Fatui, he eventually became a Harbinger and was put in charge of the economic policies of the nation, rising up to become one of the richest men in the world. Through experimentation by Dottore, Pantalone was able to achieve immortality, allowing him to survive to the present day. After Dottore's death in Nod-Krai, Pantalone secretly arrived in Sumeru to honor a deal with him: Pantalone uploaded Dottore's remaining soul into Irminsul, allowing him to infect the tree; an endeavor that ultimately failed. He currently serves as one of the main organizers of Project Stuzha.

Profile

Pantalone was born into poverty and was never able to receive a Vision, leading him to foster in resentment for the gods and their control over resources like Mora.[7] Rex Lapis in particular appears to be the greatest target of Pantalone's ire,[7][8] as he is the sole source of Mora and as a result, Teyvat's economy is effectively under his control.[9] This instilled him with an obsession with "fair exchange" and a desire to reverse the natural imbalance between gods and humans. For this reason, he worked with Dottore,[10] as Pantalone claims both of them are not tolerated by the rules of the world and are searching for a new world order.[11] Pantalone is also working with Pulcinella on a special project named Project Stuzha and was noted as always remaining in Snezhnaya like the Rooster. This sets him apart from many of his colleagues, as mentioned by Arlecchino.

Pantalone is currently in charge of Snezhnaya's economic policies[12] and is the wealthiest of all the Harbingers.[13] His immense wealth is such that he paid for the Fatui's exclusive, indefinite use of the Goth Grand Hotel in Mondstadt upfront.[14] When Bao'er saw the kinds of business transactions Landa was handling on Pantalone's behalf, she warns the Traveler against trying to find out more about it.[15]

Uncle Tian believes Pantalone's plan — to make Snezhnaya the "heart that pumps money around the world"[7] and perhaps entirely replace Mora as a currency[8] — has the potential to "shake the world to its core,"[13] and fellow Harbingers Tartaglia and Wanderer both characterize him by his ambition.[10][16]

Appearance

While Pantalone's chronological age is at least 400 years, he retained the physical appearance of a 45-year-old man as a result of Dottore's Elixir of Immortality.[Note 1] He has curly black hair that reaches to his shoulders and ends in a dark purple ombre. In A Winter Night's Lazzo, Pantalone wears a typical Snezhnayan coat of white color with black fur on the hoods and sleeves. In game, he instead wears a black coat over his shoulders with a furred collar and a scaled purple-white interior. He also wears a black turtleneck shirt with 6 gems near the collar, 3 on each side, along with a "V" shaped gem below the others. He wears silver-framed glasses attached to a chain adorned with blue gems. He frequently keeps his eyes closed for extended periods, doing so throughout the entirety of A Winter Night's Lazzo and for portions of his in-game appearances. When opened, they are revealed to be of a soft purple color.

When acting anonymously, Pantalone dons a cloak with a hood that covers more than half of his face, replacing the coat that hangs on his back.

Story

Past

Feofan Sergeyevich Veksel was born over 400[17] years ago to an unnamed woman in a place in Snezhnaya described as a "frozen wasteland." He spent much of his early life in poverty.[7] As a child, he was a disruptive boy prone to misbehaving, which earned him corporal punishment. His mother eventually sold him to debt collectors, an event that the young Feofan felt happy for as it would finally enable him to escape his destitute birthplace.[6]

Feofan ended up adopted by a man who inspired his economic ambitions. Feeling hopeful for the future, he tried to run a business, which ultimately failed.[18] At age 20, he was framed by a gang and sold to Dottore,[18] who used him as a test subject of his Acute Toxicity Test. His lack of records for administration or reactions to the substance within the report, as well as some comments from Dottore during a conversation between the two centuries later, imply Feofan was able to talk his way out of being used as a subject, and Dottore instead chose to treat the would-be fatal wounds he came in with. At some point, Pantalone became one of Dottore's subordinates. As such, they kept in contact, with Dottore treating a gunshot wound he acquired at the age of 26.[17]

Feofan later joined the Harbingers by age 30, and was granted the codenames Pantalone and Regrator.[18] It is implied Dottore gave his recommendation, but Pantalone asserted he became a Harbinger on his own merits, as his specific role is not one he could have acquired without genuine ability.[18] With Pantalone funding Dottore’s experiments alongside Pulcinella, Dottore would supply him with an experimental immortality drug after a period of experimentation with him and logged his various medical appointments, which were continued for centuries by Dottore's segments after he died. Pantalone's medical issues varied, but these were mainly resolved by Dottore's segments, which included treatments like organ transplant surgeries. In spite of some health problems, Pantalone was known to frequently smoke, something which upset Dottore.[17]

At some point, Pantalone secretly began an experiment to test the feasibility of a new, alternate currency to Mora. He picked the secluded Fortress of Meropide as the testing ground for his experiment and had his agents introduce Credit Coupons, which soon became the Fortress' exclusive currency.[8][Note 2] It is unclear how long Credit Coupons have been around, but they have been in use for a "very long time" and were used by the administrator before Wriothesley.[19]

One of Yelan's past operations involved Pantalone as her opponent and resulted in the loss of a Fascinating Bracelet, an heirloom pair of magical communication devices, rendering the surviving bracelet useless. To make up for her loss, she infiltrated Pantalone's secret trade route and got ahold of a highly valuable robe made with a powerful beast's fur, which he had intended as a gift to the Tsaritsa. She has since taken the beast's fur to create the white mantle she currently wears.[20]

Shortly before the start of the Traveler's journey, Pantalone attended a performance, "The Mountain Sparrow," by the Korolevskiy Troupe, with Signora, Sandrone, Columbina, and Dottore. A short time later, every Harbinger including Pantalone attended a meeting in which Pierro outlined the Tsaritsa's plan to collect all the Gnoses. Pantalone was assigned oversight over financial arrangements.[21]

Present Day

Sometime before the Traveler arrived in Mondstadt, Pantalone booked the entire Goth Grand Hotel for the Fatui's exclusive use; while Goth was opposed to it due to the Goth family's motto of serving the people of Mondstadt, Pantalone paid for the entire intended duration upfront with an "unbelievably generous" offer.[14]

His agent Landa can be found at Wangshu Inn,[22] who is also implied to be the Snezhnayan agent who abandoned his mission to infiltrate Mondstadt's wine industry after getting spooked by Noelle's behavior.[23] Landa loses the invoices for a major, top-secret transaction at the start of the World Quest Big Business, causing him to enlist the Traveler's help. Bao'er, who chanced upon one of the invoice boxes and took a peek inside, advises the Traveler not to ask too many questions about "transactions of this scale," and Landa panics at the realization that an outsider knows the details of the transaction.[15]

While not directly involved in the events of Yelan's Story Quest, Umbrabilis Orchis Chapter: Act I - Calculated Gambit, Pantalone intervenes after Yusupov's plan to assassinate Uncle Tian and establish Zhiyi as the new Tianshu fails. Having kept an eye on the proceedings, Pantalone extracted Theofan, Yusupov's subordinate and Zhiyi's co-conspirator, from Liyue off-screen before Yelan could make him her pawn. Given that Pantalone still has his eyes on Liyue, Yelan plans on using this as the basis for her next mission.[13]

At some point after Scaramouche obtained the Electro Gnosis and cut off contact from the Fatui, Pantalone and his fellow Harbingers attended Rosalyne's funeral. When Pulcinella decreed that all work in Snezhnaya would be halted for a half a day to mourn Signora's passing, Pantalone critized him on its duration, claiming it to be "unconscionable" even by his own standards as a banker.[24]

Pantalone is collaborating with Pulcinella on a project called Project Stuzha, which is supposedly setting the Fatui's future direction. Leading up to the project, they gave the House of the Hearth a great deal of funding and have since made the Hearth "key members" of Project Stuzha. Given this means they will likely face the largest casualties, Arlecchino and the other members of the Hearth suspect this ploy is meant to weaken and obtain more control over them.[25] Tartaglia was also recalled to Snezhnaya to participate in the project.

At "The Rusty Rudder" in Fontaine, the contents of the Discarded Bill in front of "Tilla" likely relates to Landa; it mentions three heavy shipments from Liyue, and states that "our friends in Liyue" are in trouble. Brek, who is mentioned in the Bill, reveals that he has made a deal with a "prominent merchant from Snezhnaya."[26]

A Fontainian merchant named Montluson later made contact with Pantalone's subordinates, who wished to destroy a sphere in some ruins near the Masters of the Night-Wind that created the same paint he had developed and wished to sell for a profit. The proposal caught his interests, as Pantalone saw that Montluson could become a giant in the painting industry while also disrupting Fontaine's economic system. He sent Grudoc to assist him, who planted explosives in the ruins. While the plan was partially interrupted by Citlali and the Traveler's intervention, the ruins were ultimately destroyed by Grudoc, who knew that being captured would implicate Pantalone's role in the plot.[27]

When one half of Dottore's soul caused chaos in Nod-Krai, Pantalone was recalled to answer directly to the Tsaritsa with Pulcinella due to his ties to the Second Harbinger. He was able to rectify the situation by placing the blame on someone else (implied to be Dottore) and managed to simply turn the affair into a "public relations nightmare." After the half was destroyed by Columbina and her friends, sending it into the Ley Lines, Pantalone made preparations to fulfill the other end of his deal, leading a group of Fatui to Sumeru. Aware that heading as himself would irreparably destroy Snezhnaya's relationship with Sumeru, Pantalone wore a cloak to conceal his face and identified himself as one of Dottore's subordinates. The Fatui planted several spikes in Gurabad to cause unrest among the local jinn population before making their way to Sumeru City to install the last of the backup data, reviving the Doctor in a new form. Dottore told him to defend the city from the incoming populace, though Pantalone's efforts to stop them ultimately failed. Nonetheless, he was safely out of the city areas before the attack started and witnessed the burning of the Irminsul tree. Dottore pointed out that after he is gone, there will be no one to produce the elixir and his remaining stock would only last a few more years, but Pantalone told him that he would let things run their course, just as he does when he feels optimistic about market environments, and will choose not to be particular about the manner of his death. He bid farewell to Dottore and left the nation.[18]

Trivia

  • It is unclear whether Pantalone had a direct link to the former Fontainian criminal organization Club di Pantaloni Novita.[Note 3] Regardless, the newspaper clipping about its dismantlement at the Spina di Rosula's hands is found at "The Rusty Rudder," adding to the list of implications that several of the NPCs found there are Pantalone's associates.
  • Both the Damaged News Clip at "The Rusty Rudder" and an exchange on the Lumidouce Harbor Noticeboard suggest that someone is artificially inflating the price of Chenyu Vale's tea; whether this is another one of Pantalone's schemes has yet to be confirmed.
Pantalone's constellation

Pantalone's constellation

  • Pantalone's constellation represents a globus cruciger, a Christian symbol of authority consisting of a globe (representing the world) surmounted by a cross (representing the divine power). The visual symbolism of "holding the world in the palm of the hand" reflects Pantalone's desire to dominate the world through money.
    • The same symbol is also visible on one of its rings.
  • Pantalone is a heavy smoker. He has been smoking for hundreds of years, resulting in the requirement of lung transplant surgery. At age 175, he was noted to have been a longtime smoker of 20 cigarettes per day. This amount decreased to 8 cigarettes per day throughout the centuries.[17]
  • Pantalone has particularly bad vision, requiring surgical intervention that is implied to be recurring starting from when he was 56 years old. It is apparently poor enough that losing his glasses once caused him to get a nosebleed by tripping over a bedpost, the treatment of which was relegated to Dottore's 8-year-old segment.[17]
  • Pantalone seemingly writes documents in floral perfumed ink, which, according to Yelan, is a common practice among wealthy people in Snezhnaya who want to "[inject] a little romance into their writing".[28]

Etymology

  • Like the other Harbingers, Pantalone's alias is derived from a stock character in commedia dell'arte, a type of Italian theater which uses masks to designate their character's role in the story.
    • "Pantalone" is greedy and uses his high social standing to push others around and interfere with their business. Oftentimes, he is the father of one of the Innamorati and tries to keep the two lovers apart.
    • The literal meaning of "Pantalone" in Italian is "Pants."
  • A regrator (or regrater) is a person who purchases goods from a market, then resells that item in the same (or nearby) market at an inflated price. In modern times, he would be called a Scalper.
    • Curiously, unlike the other Harbingers, instead of his commedia dell'arte name (Pantalone), his code name (Regrator) is used in his introduction.
  • Feofan (Феофан) is the Russian form of the Ancient Greek Theophanes (Θεοφάνης), meaning "manifestation of God".
  • Sergeyevich (Сергеевич) means "son of Sergey", which itself is the Russian form of the Roman Sergius, a name possibly meaning "servant" or of unknown Etruscan origin.
  • Veksel (Вексель) is a Russian word which means "bill of exchange" or "promissory note", meaning a document guaranteeing the payment of a specified sum from one party to another.

Notes

  1. As stated in Anomalous Tree Marrow I, Pantalone has been taking Dottore's elixir of immortality (noted simply as Trial Version 2) since at least the age of 38; after three years of observation, it was noted his aging had slowed significantly. By 72, Dottore used data from his own autopsy to perfect the formula (now Trial Version 5) and halt aging entirely, which, after 5 subsequent years of observation to confirm its complete success, Dottore notes Pantalone (now 77) has only physically aged to approximately 45 years and will not age again from that point forward.
  2. Pantalone is assumed to be the mastermind behind Credit Coupons based on the narrative similarities between Moment of Cessation and Cashflow Supervision's descriptions.
  3. The organization's name is not translated identically across localizations, making it unclear whether the similarities between Pantalone and "Pantaloni" were intended by the original Chinese text, which simply called the organization 新奇裤俱乐部 lit. "New Pants Club."
