Capitano

Il Capitano, also known as "The Captain" and by his personal name Thrain, is the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. He is a man from Khaenri'ah who served as a high ranking knight and Commander until the fall of the kingdom during the Cataclysm 500 years ago, after which he was placed under a curse of immortality by Ronova. Sometime afterwards, he joined the Fatui in Snezhnaya as a Harbinger, becoming famed for his great strength and integrity.

In Natlan, he opposed Mavuika's plans to fight against the Abyss, seeing them as hopeless, and instead sought to save the nation through alternate means. After failing to seize the Pyro Gnosis by force, he began to pursue his goals covertly with the support of Ororon, and even attempted to enlist the Traveler to his side, but was later convinced to join forces with Mavuika. Following Gosoythoth's defeat, Capitano sacrificed himself in place of Mavuika's death by merging his existence to Yohualtecuhtin, Lord of the Night, supplying her with eternal life to repair Natlan's Ley Lines. Capitano's body now remains dormant on the Throne of the Primal Fire atop Ochkanatlan.

Profile

Capitano, also known as "The Captain,"[5] enjoys a high reputation amongst the Fatui for his strength, skill as a commander, and moral integrity. Lower-ranked members refer to him as "the ever-righteous Captain" and "the nigh-invincible Captain,"[6] with some stating that they would prefer to work under him, if they had the choice.[7] The elite soldiers under Capitano's command, much like himself, also hold themselves to firm moral standards.[8]

The Wanderer, however, views such attributes negatively and points out that holding "absolute righteousness" is a potential hazard.[6] Similarly, Guthred, Capitano's former second-in-command, claimed that whenever he indulged in his sense of honor, it would result in him losing his chance to win.[9] Though he and Capitano shared different views on justice, Capitano tolerated them, seeing that their differences made them the perfect partners.[10]

Being the First of the Fatui Harbingers, Capitano has powers rivaling that of a god,[11] and is considered the strongest of the Fatui;[12] this was the case even after he was severely weakened by the decay caused to his body after centuries spent under the curse of immortality.[13] The Pyro Archon Mavuika told him that, during their fight, she felt as if she was fighting the pinnacle of human strength, and she considers them so evenly matched that a true battle between them could go either way.[13] Similarly, Leifhelm considers him the only person they had encountered during the Knights of Favonius expedition to Nod-Krai whose strength could compare to Varka.[14]

Personality

Capitano is a individual with high-moral standards, having strong sense of honor and righteousness, as he stated that he shouldn't be praised for the fight against Mavuika since he lost, plain and simple. It shows his humbleness, refusing to take credit for something he failed.[15] He is admired as "the brave and fearless Captain", and demonstrates unwavering loyalty to the Tsaritsa, a calm demeanor, and is respected even by enemies like Varka, often prioritizing honor and duty over deception. He avoids needless cruelty as shown with his decision to sacrifice himself to stop Abyssal corruption in Natlan and to give the souls he was carrying with him a place "to rest".[16] At first glance he may seem to be cold and unemotional, but he's shown to be caring and thoughtful towards his peers or anyone in general.[17] He has always treated others with repect and understanding, knowing that not everyone will agree with his ideals or decisions. Capitano is also a rational individual, as he offered to work with Mavuika to stop the Abyss, not letting his pride or the fact she's his enemy get in the way of his decision.[15] He wanted to help because he didn't want the Abyss to hurt innocent civilians. Capitano also doesn't talk about himself, as shown when Ororon had asked him a question, but didn't answer.[18]

Appearance

Capitano is a tall man with a rather large build. He has glowing, dark blue eyes[19] and long black hair that protrudes from the back of his helmet and over his shoulders. His helmet obscures his face, which he mentions is in a state of "decay" and disfigurement.[13] While Capitano reveals his face to a surprised Traveler and Paimon to show the suffering that the Ruler of Death inflicted on both himself and the people of Khaenri'ah, it is obscured from the player's view.

His helmet is similar in appearance to a captain's helmet, composed of a black and silver color scheme with gold lining on the edges and a sharp, silver lower piece that covers the lower part of his face. On the front of his helmet is a golden, four-pointed star with smaller dark gray triangles on the inner arms of the four-pronged triangle, which is a recurring symbol in Khaenri'ah. On the sides of the helmet are small gold chains that cross the edge of the helmet. He wears a typical Snezhnayan dark-gray winter coat with metal accessories and deep blue fur on the collar, which he takes off during battle. Underneath the coat, he wears a black bodysuit with golden chains and accessories, consisting of a pair of clawed, metal gauntlets and black knee-high boots. He is also able to manifest a darker variant of Cryo despite him not wearing anything that resembles a Vision or Fatui Delusion, which could be explained by his Khaenri'ahn origins.

Prior to and during the Cataclysm, he wore a similar attire to Halfdan, although with a black eight-pointed star, shoulder guards, and a silver aiguillette on his right arm.[18]

Story

Thrain was born in Khaenri'ah, where he served as a high ranking knight and Commander, eventually being honored with the title of Sentinel Knight.[18] Thrain's heart was also modified with Khaenri'ahn tecnology to convert memories and souls into knowledge from the Ley Lines.[18] He was distantly acquainted with the Traveler's sibling, whom he saw for the last time together with Dainsleif.[13]

When the cataclysm hit Khaenri'ah, Thrain watched as his nation, family, and allies fell to the Abyss, deeply scarring him.[9] After putting up some resistance, he realized that the situation in Khaenri'ah was unsalvageable and fled with the remnants of his platoon to Natlan. At the time, many people viewed those from Khaenri'ah with suspicion due to believing they were responsible for the disaster, though he befriended the chief of the Masters of the Night-Wind at the time, Ayizu, who treated him with respect. The two fought countless battles against the Abyss, but Ayizu eventually died. Before his death, he told Thrain about the secret of the Pyro Gnosis, which caused him to resent Mavuika for not fulfilling her oath and prolonging the inevitable.[13]

Throughout his journeys, he would absorb countless souls using his modified heart, which he hoped to release into the Ley Lines to grant them peace. For his contributions in the defence of Natlan against the Abyss, he was remembered and honored in the nation as one of their legendary heroes.[18]

Following the Cataclysm, Thrain was one of the pure-blooded Khaenri'ahn survivors who became cursed with immortality by Ronova.[20] Sometime afterwards, he eventually made his way to Snezhnaya, where he joined the Fatui and became the First of the Fatui Harbingers, receiving the codenames Il Capitano and "The Captain."[5]

Over three centuries ago, Capitano called a meeting with the other Harbingers, which Dottore was requested to attend.[21]

Over a decade ago,[Note 1] following the death of fellow Harbinger Crucabena, Capitano was in attendance along with Scaramouche and Signora when Pierro announced Peruere as Crucabena's replacement on behalf of the Tsaritsa.[22]

While seeking out Arlecchino, having work related matters to discuss with her, he asked Columbina on where he might find her, who suggested that she may be at Sandrone's tea party. The interaction was noticed by Tartaglia, who followed them to the social gathering. Upon being questioned by an irritated Sandrone about their uninvited presence, Capitano apologized and explained the situation. Though annoyed, Sandrone permitted them to stay, to which Capitano responded that he would not sully their gathering with work discussion, promising to save it for afterwards.[23]

Shortly before the start of the Traveler's journey, Capitano was in attendance during a meeting with the other Harbingers in which Pierro outlined the Tsaritsa's plan to collect all the Gnoses.[24]

Present

At some point after the retrieval of the Anemo Gnosis, Capitano participated in a meeting with Arlecchino, Sandrone, and Signora that lasted for 40 minutes.[25]

After Signora's death at the hands of the Raiden Shogun, a funeral for her was held in Snezhnaya. Capitano, along with the other Harbingers barring Scaramouche, was in attendance. Though he denounced her methods as dishonourable, he nontheless considered her passing to be "a great pity." He then questioned Dottore on the situation with Scaramouche and the Electro Gnosis.[26]

During Varka's expedition in Snezhnaya, when Mika was accompanying them, the knights accidentally ran into several Fatui scouts, resulting in a tense situation when Capitano was eventually alerted of the situation alongside Varka. The two eventually met and agreed to peacefully depart, with Varka stating that he would have loved to duel him under different circumstances.[19] Capitano provided intel about the Abyssal calamity that Varka was seeking.[27] Afterwards, he received orders to depart towards Natlan.[28]

After Fontaine's prophecy was averted, Neuvillette informs the Traveler that Capitano had joined the conflicts occurring in Natlan, having learnt this information through his dealings with Arlecchino.[29]

His arrival in Natlan was noted by the locals, who began referring to him as a "big deal." His primary goal was to look for Citlali, eventually meeting Ororon in order to figure out where she was, as they belonged to the same tribe. Ororon, sensing his intentions, refused, and Capitano was able to tell he was lying. Ororon began to trail Capitano to figure out why he was looking for her, and while he noted his presence, let him be. Eventually, he decided to confront Mavuika, during which Ororon sensed a feeling akin to a soul trying to escape. The two fought, but Capitano was wounded after a clash with her resulted in a direct hit on his heart. Before they could continue their fight, Ororon would intervene and Capitano escaped. [30]

In a secret cave, Ororon wanted to sacrifice his life for Natlan and he believes that Capitano was the key to showing him the way. During this time, a subordinate named Rezanov told him that the Pyro Archon was also weakened and asks if they should take the Gnosis, but he refused, having acknowledged his defeat to her. Capitano revealed to Ororon that he was looking for Citlali as she could communicate with the Wayob and thus the Night Kingdom. He initially refused to tell him the plan, but Ororon reminded him that he had saved his life and could tell that he had a sense of justice in him. This convinced Capitano to disclose his ideas to him, and the two ultimately decided that the best way to resolve Natlan's crisis was to reconstruct the nation's Ley Lines. To make this plan a reality, Capitano learned of a Source Mechanism and ordered his subordinates to acquire it, which they did after compiling notes from several researchers.[30]

Realizing that Capitano's plan would be just as disastrous as using the Gnosis, Mavuika, Xilonen and the Traveler would infiltrate the ruins where the Source Mechanism was held, while Kinich distracted the garrison outside. Ororon activated the mechanism, but soon became possessed by another entity, who Capitano recognized and stopped. The soul addressed Capitano as "Commander" and lamented the fact that he upheld his values over victory before being expelled. The plan did not rework the Ley Lines, but instead awakened the Lord of the Night. Capitano later revealed that his plan was meant to prevent Natlan from suffering the same fate as Khaenri'ah, though with Ororon being acknowledged by his Ancient Name, he eventually agreed to Mavuika's plan, seeing that it had the potential for the best outcome and offered his subordinates for her use.[9]

Capitano and his subordinates assisted Mavuika in repelling the Abyss when they invaded, though his men took immense casualties defending the people. After the Abyss was repelled, Capitano attended the victory feast, where Mavuika expressed her thanks to him and his forces. Capitano later visited the Lord of the Night, asking her to help him for the sake of the fallen Natlan people and to save Natlan, aware that Mavuika had used Ronova's powers and would die as a result of using them.[31]

After the invasion, Capitano visited the Feather-Flower Clan and gave them the Draught of Lucidity, which was developed by Guthred and helped cure the worst cases of Abyssal Corrosion Syndrome. Capitano then spoke to the Traveler and Paimon in a private conversation, where he revealed that his work was not yet done in the nation, though he did not disclose any more details to them, stating it was largely personal matters. When the Ruler of Death was brought up by the Traveler, Capitano decided to reveal his true face beneath his helmet to them to showcase his disdain for the Ruler of Death for what she did to him and his people. Afterward, Capitano said his goodbyes and departed after Iansan arrived to inform the Traveler of their Ancient Name being forged by Xilonen.[20]

When Ronova demanded Mavuika's death for using her powers, the Lord of the Night was reluctant to do so. She instead revealed that another was coming to take her place, revealed to be Capitano. Capitano expressed his disdain towards Ronova for causing the people of Khaenri'ah to suffer despite most of them knowing nothing of the Five Sinners' exploitation of Abyssal power, and replaced Mavuika as the death the Shade desired. Due to the curse of immortality that she had placed on him, it would create a paradox that could unravel the rules of the world, forcing her to either forsake one of her rules or trigger a paradox. Ronova ultimately decided to uphold the curse, and Capitano merged himself with the Lord of the Night, permanently preventing the Lord of the Night from dying. His body would remain seated on the Throne of the Primal Fire. Mavuika and the others commemorated Capitano's sacrifice by engraving him in a monument dedicated to the fallen near the Masters of the Night-Wind, and one of his subordinates, Rotchev, attended the service, stating that he would forever serve as an example for the rest of his soldiers.[18] Though no longer able to partake in Fatui activity, the Tsaritsa kept his ranking intact.[32] All of his key subordinates were also reassigned to Tartaglia, per his missive that he gave to Pierro before leaving for Natlan.[33]

Capitano's constellation

  • Capitano's constellation consists of three crossed nails. The three nails, in the modern imagination, recall the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, who was crucified with his hands and feet nailed to the cross by three nails, and are therefore considered a symbol of martyrdom, sacrifice, redemption, and profound love.
    • The same symbolism is recalled by the swords of the three heroes of Natlan (Prototype Rancour for the Traveler, A Thousand Blazing Suns for Mavuika and his blade for Capitano) crossed in the same way.

Etymology

  • Il Capitano is a major stock character in commedia dell'arte, from which the Harbingers' titles and aliases are derived. As a stock character, Il Capitano is often depicted as boastful and narcissistic, bragging about having fought in battles, but will ultimately cower at the face of conflict.
  • Thrain is a character from the Icelandic legendary saga Hrómundar saga Gripssonar. In the story, Thrain is a draugr, a type of corporeal undead creature, and the former king of Valland. He killed four hundred and twenty men, including King Sæmingr, the legendary first King of Norway, using his enchanted sword, Mistilteinn.
