Murata Graphia (Japanese: 無量塔グラフィエ)[4][5] is a mission-exclusive NPC on Planarcadia. She is the legendary artist who once sealed the ancient Benzaitengoku into a painting.[8] She is also the namesake of Graphia Academy and Graphia Family.

Profile

Graphia is a mysterious figure and the subject of many legends. She once saw the Astral Express crash on Planarcadia, and it inspired her to fight against her adoptive father, Asat Pramad, wishing she could be one of the Nameless one day.[3][5] She invented the art of creating imagenae, also known as imagenesis.[9] Alongside that, she created the artwork "Worldbreaker Waves," which is now located in Graphia Academy.[8]

She is currently alive through her connection with the barrier that protects the World in Canvas.[3]

History

Asat Pramad found Graphia as an infant on the verge of death among the ruins of Planarcadia over a thousand years ago. Seeing her cold and lifeless body reminded him of the Parable of the Masked Fools: Aha climbed the highest branch of the Imaginary Tree and saw the void, the stars operating like machinery, and how meaning bows before nothingness. Aha continued looking until THEY saw a baby fall to the ground and cry. This led Asat to infuse Graphia with the power of Destruction, rebirthing her as a Voidranger. He then taught her to paint monstrous beasts using the power of the Voracity in order to carry out the Antimatter Legion's will.[1][3]

Eventually, the Astral Express crashed on Ahatopia and stood like an infinite tower which also became the inspiration for her name, "Murata." Witnessing the surviving Nameless battle the monsters and protect the people of Ahatopia, Graphia underwent a change of heart and betrayed Asat Pramad, choosing instead to save the Ahatopians alongside the Nameless. In Amber Era 2148, she later entered the Phantasmoon Games in and, together with seven other Supplicants[2][10] and Evanescia,[11] managed to temporarily halt Asat Pramad's advance. Gathering all the Wishpower she could, she ultimately sealed Ahatopia within a special two-dimensional plane, ensuring that Asat Pramad could never reach the sealed fragment of Oroboros at the world's core.[3]

Subsequently, she went into a slumber within the deepest reaches of the scroll.[11] However, Graphia and her kin paid the price for daring to defy their fate as children of Destruction. The after effects of her sealing of the world manifested as the Weathering Curse, a condition that was passed down to her descendants and slowly eats away at them.[3][12]

Graphia had two known children, a daughter named Huear and a son named Lumirae.[5] Before her disappearance at the end of the Cindearth Age, she entrusted her children with the protection of Ahatopia and the recovery of the "Murata," which had sunk into the depths of the world. Many adventurers and descendants of Graphia attempted to find the tower, but all ended in failure. Professor Francois, a scholar of ancient Benzaitengoku, proposed that the Murata is actually a massive Space Fissure and that Graphia's actions indicated that she might have been an Emanator of Elation, but this theory was discredited after no Space Fissure was found while the IPC construction teams were developing every area of Planarcadia.[12]

  • According to Asat Pramad, her name was her commission to paint the world and "carve a trace of our lasting glory, just before the world meets its destruction."[3]

Etymology

  • 無量 Muryō means "immeasurable," and 塔 tō means "tower." Together, 無量塔 Muryōtō means "immeasurable tower," alluding to the Astral Express that Graphia encountered, which was eventually called the Tower of Infinity.[2]
  • Graphia's name in Chinese consists of the characters 绘 Huì meaning "to paint," and 世 Shì, meaning "world." Together, 绘世 Huìshì means "to paint the world," alluding to the reason why Asat Pramad raised Graphia: to paint a trace of the Destruction onto Planarcadia before Asat Pramad destroyed it.[3] It may also allude to Graphia's feat of transforming Benzaitengoku into a painting.
