The Cunning Hares, officially Gentle House, is a human resource dispatch agency and a faction in Zenless Zone Zero. It was founded by Nicole Demara.

The Cunning Hares play a major part in Phaethon's Story, appearing in numerous episodes and having major relevance in the story so far.

Description

The Cunning Hares were formed as a small-scale human resource dispatch agency, their main business to deal with commissions relating to Hollows.

Though small in size, all members possess noteworthy abilities.

The agency was originally registered under the name "Gentle House", but due to the founder's cunning and crafty style, they earned the name the "Cunning Hares".

Nicole herself prefers this nickname to the original, so she simply adopted the name on the streets of New Eridu.

"To find your cat or find your revenge, consider it done for the right fee!"

Overview

Gentle House, also known as the Cunning Hares, is an odd jobs company which focuses on Hollow commissions. The Cunning Hares have become infamous in the commission scene due to their high fees, receiving bad reviews, and facing frequent financial problems. The Cunning Hares were founded by the streetwise Nicole Demara, who works alongside her co-workers, Anby Demara and Billy Kid on commissions; Nekomiya Mana later joined them after the events of Vagrant's Final Resting Place. The Cunning Hares is also a frequent client of the legendary Proxy, Phaethon, although the Cunning Hares often owe Phaethon months' worth of commission fees.[1]

Trivia

  • Each member of the Cunning Hares take inspiration from various kinds of criminals:
    • Nicole is likely inspired by confidence artists or scam artists, as she has pulled many such tricks on unsuspecting clients, such as attempting to scam Hoshimi Miyabi out of her family's katana.[2] She also seems inspired by gang leaders in popular media, notably when she's seen threatening a group of people with death over late commission fees.[3]
    • Anby is likely based on Ferdinand Waldo Demara a famous American imposter. Ferdinand's first case of identity theft was borrowing the name of a friend in the army, and going AWOL. Anby also has a military background that ended with her deserting.
    • Billy is based on outlaws from the Old West subperiod of American history — most notably his namesake, Billy the Kid.
    • Nekomata is a former street gang member. She could also be a literal play on the words "cat burgular," since she is a cat Thiren with thieving tendencies (namely pickpocketing).
  • According to Venus, the original three members of Cunning Hares have personal monikers:
    • Nicole's is "Gravity Warden."
    • Billy's is "the White Chariot."
    • Anby's is "Electric Geek."
