Lochknight

Last updated 2026-07-11

The Lochknights were a group of knights who were charged with the duty of protecting Oceanids. They were also one of the rebel groups led by the Lochknight Erinnyes to resist Remus' rule over Remuria.[1]

Overview

The history of the Lochknights is heavily shrouded in legend and embellished in stories. The first Lochknight was said to have concealed themselves in the wilderness with the Oceanids, intending to use self-exile and training to repay a sin.[2] Lochknights were said to born in concealed sanctuaries of pure spring water during Remus' reign. They swore by armor of silver to protect the Oceanids and the still-unpolluted springs, protect their fellows, and resist Remuria.[3] They also pledged to never draw their sword against those who pledge faith in Egeria or compromise in the face of evil.[4] They went through many trials and tribulations to find the Pure Grail and eventually welcomed the return of Egeria.[5]

Not long after Remuria collapsed, they shed their armor.[3] The concept of Lochknights completely died out a few decades after Remuria's fall.[6] Some of their descendants would join the Marechausee Hunters, a group of heroes gathered by the Golden Hunter to wipe out the monsters threatening the peace of Fontaine.[7] There is an ancient legend that claims that Egeria gave a Lakelight Lily to the last Lochknight as a farewell gift.[8]

The Remurians dismissed the Lochknights as lies and fictions told by slaves, calling them barbarians who worship a false god.[9]

Legacy

The adventures of the Lochknights are told and retold across many generations in a variety of media, including plays, poetry, and films. They were the subject of the historical film Lochknight of the Lance, which depicted the knights' search for Oceanids.[10] The play "Mounted Python and the Pure Grail" was also written about them.[11] The farewell of the Lochknight Drest and Adsiltia is considered an example of classical romance in Fontainian culture.[9] The feathered adornments in the hats that were once popular among opera composers were based on the Lochknights' helms.[5]

The Fontinalia Festival was established to commemorate the Lochknights and their quest. People would imitate them by putting on costumes, raise golden cups, and go door to door asking for pure water.[12]

The tradition of gifting Lakelight Lilies to those going on long journeys remain to this day.[8]
