Conch Gang

The Conch Gang is a group of stray kids under the care of Katya, the owner of Speranza. Katya employs them at her restaurant, but also ensures that they have the freedom to live as they like.
Overview
According to some stories, a group of children were the first to "conquer" Nasha Town. It is said that they would blow into a conch shell to call gatherings, and thus, they became the "Conch Gang."[1] Before long, however, Nasha Town was developed into the bustling settlement it is today, and the Conch Gang no longer dominated the area.[2]
In the present day, the Traveler remarks that the Conch Gang has many members and some "pretty good benefits." They are based at Speranza, where the owner Katya provides them with food, shelter, and employment. The children have a high degree of freedom; for example, Semyon trekked out to Maroon Basin to research Tassel Jellies,[3] and Helka is currently traveling outside of Nod-Krai.[4]
In order for a new member to join the gang, all of the existing members must unanimously agree.[5][4] According to Havu, joining is somewhat difficult.[6] As part of their tradition, the Conch Gang typically only accepts children and kicks members out at a certain age,[2] but there is a precedent for admitting older individuals in some cases.[4]
During the events of The Mirrors, the Maze, and the Tsar, Maite dubs the Traveler an official friend of the gang.
Some members of the gang once told Jahoda that Mr. Derwent taught them how to read.[7]
