Eleven Fatui Harbingers

The Eleven Fatui Harbingers are the executive heads of the Fatui who have been given god-like authority and ability-augmenting Delusions by the Tsaritsa, and with it, strength surpassing that of other mortals.^[2] Each Harbinger leads their own division within the Fatui.

In each of the first six Archon Quest Chapters, Harbingers have been dispatched to other nations to obtain their respective elemental Gnoses.^[3]

Overview

The Eleven Harbingers are the most powerful and highest-ranking members of the Fatui,^[4] and are also all wealthy, politically influential members of Snezhnayan society. According to Ekaterina, the amount of money Tartaglia has saved at the Northland Bank "boggles the mind," while Goth tells the Traveler that Pantalone, the richest of all, rented out the entire Goth Grand Hotel in Mondstadt indefinitely for the Fatui's personal use by paying upfront. Tartaglia's status prevented the Fatui diplomats handling the aftermath of his summoning of Osial from resolving the situation by handing him over to the Liyue Qixing;^[5] the Northland Bank instead had to pay heavy reparations.^[6] Meanwhile, his Harbinger status meant his interest in the Fishing Line Stabilizer turned into a highly sought after item, showing the Harbingers' ability to influence Snezhnaya's popular culture.^[7]

The Harbingers are led by Pierro,^[1] the Director of the Fatui,^[8] who occasionally assigns them missions or requests their attendance at meetings.^[9][10]

The Fatui Harbingers all answer to the Tsaritsa and receive their appointments from her,^[2] either directly during a ceremony in Zapolyarny Palace or communicated via the Director on her behalf.^[11][12]

Upon becoming a Harbinger, a person is given a new name and title,^[13] which can be inherited from their previous holder.^[14] They are also assigned a ranking number, which is based on the individual's power.^[15][16] The most recent top three Harbingers possessed powers which could rival the gods.^[17][18]

The Harbingers partake in a "wild" and "frenzied banquet,"^[19][20] to which Pierro may personally invite prospective recruits. This is implied to have a hand in determining the position of a Harbinger.^[21][22] Nothing else is currently known, including whether the "banquet" is literal or figurative.

The Tsaritsa grants Harbingers the freedom to "pursue the meaning of their existence."^[23] As a result, each Harbinger has their own work ideologies and methodologies which do not represent Snezhnaya's official stance,^[24] and these differences in perspective can result in clashes between Harbingers. While they can trade barbs and insults — as prominently shown in A Winter Night's Lazzo — the Tsaritsa has prohibited them from fighting one another,^[25] though she can freely lift this restriction if a Harbinger's actions goes against her conduit.^[26]

Several Harbingers have been shown to command at least one company or division, while also taking charge of the rank-and-file Fatui located within the nation they are dispatched to. Tartaglia, for example, was forced to give new recruits in Liyue an introductory speech due to being the only Harbinger in the nation at the time; in Inazuma, management of the Delusion Factory transferred from Signora to Scaramouche after the latter's arrival. Relationships between the Harbingers and their subordinates vary, but most rank-and-file Fatui tend to respect the Harbingers. Some Fatui are exceptionally devoted to their commanding Harbingers and will act without orders to advance their Harbinger's goals^[27][28] or to avenge a fallen Harbinger's death.^[29] Such behavior is not always appreciated by other Fatui members, especially when it threatens to disrupt their operations; Elchingen, for example, is assassinated by another Fatui division based in Sumeru due to the trouble he causes during Fabulous Fungus Frenzy.^[30]

• Each Harbinger's first in-game appearance is accompanied by a dramatic still introducing them with the Harbinger's name, title, and rank.
  • Scaramouche is the only Harbinger introduced in an event, during the Event Story Quest What the Skies Conceal, the Water Reveals in Unreconciled Stars: Act III. For players that were not around for that event, his dramatic still plays during the Archon Quest Delusion in Chapter II: Act III - Omnipresence Over Mortals.
  • Columbina resigned from the Fatui before her in-game introduction and therefore never receives a dramatic still.
  • Pantalone's dramatic still originally differed by emphasizing his title (Regrator) and excluding his commedia dell'arte name. This has since been fixed.

Etymology

• The Harbingers' titles are derived from the stock characters in commedia dell'arte, a type of Italian theater which uses masks to designate their character's role in the story.
  • "Pierro" ("The Fool") is a sad clown who regularly gets made fun of by the others in commedia dell'arte. He pines for the love of Columbina, who usually breaks his heart and leaves him for Arlecchino.
  • "Il Capitano" ("The Captain") is a braggart who weaves tall tales about himself, often only managing to convince people who knew nothing about him beforehand. He is cowardly, greedy, and opportunistic, with little loyalty shown to any side.
  • "Il Dottore" ("The Doctor") is usually extremely rich and bombastic, loving the sound of his own voice to the point of going on rants. In commedia dell'arte, Il Dottore typically tries to interfere with the Innamorati ("The Lovers") as part of the Vecchi ("The Elders").
  • "Columbina" ("Little Dove") is a female servant who is often called the "only functional intellect on the stage" as she does her best to get the Innamorati together.
  • "Arlecchino" ("Harlequin") is an astute servant and trickster, usually acting to thwart the plans of his master and pursuing his own love interest, Columbina, with wit and resourcefulness, often competing with the sterner and melancholic Pierro.
  • "Pulcinella" ("Rooster") is a fearless and egotistical self-preservationist who manipulates others to get what he wants. In a fight between sides, he always sides with the winner.
  • "Scaramouche" ("Little Skirmisher") is usually an assortment of different villainous traits, but primarily unscrupulous and unreliable with a penchant for intrigue, which lands him into difficult situations.
  • "Sandrone" ("Peasant") is a peasant who is boorish, but clever and cunning. He is seen as the spokesman of a humble people who are ill-treated, eternally hungry, and always using tricks to make ends meet.
  • "La Signora" ("The Lady") is typically tough, beautiful, and calculating; she is also proud and enjoys mocking others. La Signora typically manipulates Pantalone's wealth for her own ends.
  • "Pantalone" ("Merchant") is greedy and uses his high social standing to push others around to interfere with their business. Oftentimes, Pantalone is the father of one of the Innamorati and tries to keep the two lovers apart.
  • "Tartaglia" ("Stutterer") speaks with a stutter. He is usually representative of the lower working class, but in some depictions of Tartaglia, he is upper-middle class. Tartaglia usually plays a comedic role in the story with his near constant clumsiness and stuttering.
  • Scaramouche's and Pierro's names use the francized names instead of the Italian ones, which are Scaramuccia and Pedrolino respectively.
• In Chinese and Japanese, the Harbingers' titles are translations of the Italian commedia name, while the Italian name is their actual name among the Harbingers. In English and other language versions, their titles and actual names have been used fairly interchangeably, although it has been used in a more standardized manner after the release of A Winter Night's Lazzo.
