Nightwatchers

The Nightwatchers are a tribe that lives on the outskirts of New Eridu, implied to reside in the Outer Ring.[1][2]
Overview
Long ago, the ancestors of the Nightwatchers once fought a powerful Ethereal known as the Night Horror for days on end. Right before the Night Horror fell, it released a surge of power, which cursed the Nightwatchers to dream of the Night Horror when sleeping at night. This would make them sleepwalk into Hollows, regaining consciousness only for a brief moment before they turned into Ethereals. However, it also gave them ability to be perceived by Ethereals as their kin, and thus be unbothered by them.[3]
Another version of the legend states that the tribe deliberately hunted down the Night Horror to seize its power of controlling other Ethereals. When the Night Horror unleashed its final surge of energy, half of the tribe immediately turned into Ethereals, and the other half was forced to defeat them. This sacrifice of their own people was the only reason they were acknowledged by the Hollow and received the gift-curse.[4]
Due to the threat posed by the Night Horror, the Nightwatchers have adopted a nocturnal lifestyle. If someone falls asleep at night, their family will keep vigil at their side until dawn arrives.[5]
The tribe possesses a staff that can create illusions of Ethereals and mimic their abilities. It is the only surviving weapon from their ancestors' battle against the Night Horror. For decades, chieftains have used it to fend off Ethereals and protect the tribe from Hollow disasters. The staff is currently wielded by Lucia, and was given to her by the chieftain.[6]
All members of the Nightwatchers that have been seen thusfar have been goat Thirens. It is currently unknown if the Nightwatchers are entirely/mostly comprised of goat Thirens.
