Profile

Phainon, real name Khaslana, is one of the Chrysos Heirs, described as "the nameless new king ascends the throne, alongside countless heroes to embark on the grand mission of deliverance" in the prophecy.^[1] His weapon of choice is the greatsword Dawnmaker, which was forged for him by Chartonus. Known as Experimental Factor "NeiKos496," among the Twelve Factors that make up the Amphoreus Experiment, he represents the Path of Destruction.

Appearance

Phainon is a tall, well-built man with neck-length messy white hair and bright cyan eyes. On his neck, he has a brown leather choker covering a yellow mark in the shape of a sun. His outfit consists of a large, ankle-length, brown and white trench coat, with golden highlights appearing throughout. The underside of his coat is a bright yellow, visible below his waist and in his popped collar. His chest is adorned with a large golden ring, decorated with numerous golden diamonds, and his sleeves possess a floral pattern traveling down their outer sides. His right sleeve is rolled up to his bicep, exposing a brown arm guard with a golden sun emblem and two grey bracelets. On his left arm, the sleeve is rolled up to his forearm, and he instead wears a golden wrist guard and a brown fingerless glove.

Phainon additionally dangles a large lapis cape off his left shoulder, connected by a black fabric which reaches over it. He wears a large, white and gold pauldron on his right shoulder, and a leather belt running across his chest which connects it to his left. Lastly, Phainon wears black pants, large boots, and has a black leather thigh strap.

History

He originated from Aedes Elysiae, a small village on Amphoreus that was, according to him, destroyed by the Flame Reaver. During his time undergoing the Trial of the Strife Coreflame, Phainon was shown memories of this incident, including a "blood-red half-sun hung in the sky" and the people "lying in a sea of flames," as well as the murder of his childhood friend, Cyrene.^[2]

In the end, Phainon fails the Trial due to being "blinded by hatred and almost losing himself."^[2] Later on, while speaking with Anaxa, he is given a piece of the Flame Reaver's cloak from Anaxa's encounter with him in the Grove of Epiphany, where he confirms it is the same person who destroyed Aedes Elysiae. He vows to defeat him in order to protect Okhema and the Flame-Chase.^[3]

Trivia

• The top right of Phainon's official introduction artwork reads "Did you see? Amphoreus has ushered in the dawn." in Amphoreus Script.
  • During the Trailblaze Mission Silver Chariot, Part With That Humanity's Epic, it is revealed that this sentence was the Trailblazer's parting words to Phainon as As I've Written was concluded.
• After learning the truth of Amphoreus and taking on the memories and Coreflames of the previous recurrence's Flame Reaver,^[4] Phainon dons his true name, "Khaslana."
  • This is also hinted at in his chapter in Amphoreus' Saga of Heroes, which revealed that Phainon isn't his real name.^[5]
• Lygus noted in the Scepter logs that starting from a certain cycle, all factors in one group began consistently exhibiting the pattern of naming themselves with the word "Khaos" or its variants.^[6] This includes Khaslana, Khaos, and the 50,121st cycle's inorganic Chaoz666 that conducted the first act of "Destruction" on Amphoreus, allowing δ-me13 to receive a gaze from Nanook and become a Lord Ravager.^[7] Lygus theorized that this particular code was thus stably inherited across iterations.
  • According to Cyrene, the name "Khaslana" suggests the meaning "to carry the primordial chaos,"^[4] while Phainon says "Khaslana" is the name of one who bears chaos.^[8] Later, Khaslana's name is revealed to be synonymous with "Bearer of Chaos."^[9]
• Phainon bears many similarities, including a striking resemblance and his real name, to Kevin Kaslana from Honkai Impact 3rd.
  • In the "Amphoreus' Saga of Heroes" trailer, Phainon is first shown with Aglaea saying, "...to embark on the grand mission of deliverance." In-game, multiple characters refer to him as "Deliverer" (Chinese: 救世主 jìushìzhǔ). Kevin Kaslana's codename is "Deliverance" (Chinese: 救世 jìushì).
  • In his in-game entrance, Phainon briefly steals the Trailblazer's baseball bat and bounces it on the ground. Kevin Kaslana, as well as his descendants Siegfried Kaslana and Kiana Kaslana, are well known to have used baseball bats as weapons.
  • Both Phainon and Kevin are part of a group known as the Flame-Chasers, who seek to destroy a type of corrupt "divinity" (whether it be Herrschers or Titans) in order to save their world.
  • Phainon's Khaslana form heavily resembles Kevin's Diabolic form.
    • Khaslana's Talent, Foundation: Stardeath Verdict, and the final hit of his Ultimate, He Who Bears the World Must Burn, resemble the move Genesis's Meteors from Kevin's "This Worldly Beast" form.

• When Khaslana speaks with Hysilens during the first eternal recurrence, she comments about the number of heroes sending letters of introduction for the Flame-Chase, noting "What's the harm in adding one more name like Phainon or Pie-non?" In Chinese, "Pie-non" (Chinese: 黑厄 Hēi'è) changes the first character of Phainon's name from "white," 白 bái, to "black," 黑 hēi, a joking play on his name. This can also been seen as an allusion to the Flame Reaver, who wears mostly black clothing while Phainon wears white.^[4]
  • When searching for Verax Leo, if the player bought the artwork Nikador Battles the Rosy Celestial Maiden from the Art Merchant, he will suggest looking at another artwork titled Phainon and Pie-non (Chinese: 白厄與黑厄 Bái'è yǔ Hēi'è), but Dan Heng curtly refuses.^[17]
  • The names "Pie-non" and 黑厄 Hēi'è are also used for the fake Phainon seen in the dream in the prologue of the Seal Slammers event.^[18]
• According to Evernight, Phainon's Myers–Briggs personality type is ENFJ.^[19]

Etymology

• The name Phainon likely derives from the Greek mythological figure Phaenon.
  • Phaenon (Greek: Φαίνων phaínōn) derives from the Ancient Greek verb φαίνω phaínō, meaning "to shine." The form φαίνων phaínōn is its present participle, meaning "the one who shines."
  • Alternatively, his name might come from another Greek deity of light who bore this name as an epithet, such as Cronus or Apollo.
• The characters that make up Phainon's Chinese name are 白 bái, meaning "white," "pure," or "bright," and 厄 è, meaning "adversity," "misfortune," or "calamity."
  • Additionally, in the name "Pie-non," 白 bái is replaced with 黑 héi, meaning "black," "dark," or "evil."
