Profile

Aglaea is the demigod of Romance and leader of the Second Flame-Chase Journey, described as "a hem of a skirt not yet sewn."^[1] Once a dressmaker who sought to make beautiful clothes for all, the heavy crown of leadership over Okhema was a path she embraced despite its thorns. Known as Experimental Factor "KaLos618," among the Twelve Factors that make up the Amphoreus Experiment, she represents the Path of Beauty.

Appearance

Aglaea is a tall woman with short, golden-blonde hair with bright yellow undertones, and blue-green and yellow eyes. Her face is framed with symmetrical strands of hair that curl inward at the tips, and her hair is also decorated with small white flowers and asymmetrical golden laurel wreaths on either side of her head.

She wears a cream-colored, toga-style gown dress with a single open-shoulder sleeve on her right side, decorated with chiton pins and adorned with ornate golden embellishments. The dress has a high slit along the right side that exposes her legs, as well as golden laurel wreath accessories which are a repeated motif across her entire outfit, including around her thigh and ankles. Her sleeve is ruffled and tied around her upper arm with a black and yellow bow, and in place of a sleeve on her left side is a golden fabric additionally tied with a yellow ribbon. Along her back is a gold, cape-like piece of fabric clipped to her shoulders, which drapes down on her right side.

Around her neck is a detailed golden choker with a teardrop gem hanging from it, and the left side of her chest has a golden tattoo. To complete her outfit, she dons golden gladiator sandals, as well as golden nail polish adorning her fingers and toes.

History

Penultimate Cycle

Prior to the beginning of Eternal Recurrences, Aglaea was a mentor for Phainon and Cyrene. In Year 4962 of the Light Calendar, Aglaea oversaw the mediation between the Kremnoan Detachment led by Mydeimos and the Okheman people represented by Phainon. Instead of a duel of blades, Aglaea requested a duel under Talanton, where the challengers measured which items of theirs weighed more than fate itself. Phainon, using his divination card of The Deliverer (and The Hero Within), won this duel, with Aglaea congratulating him afterwards. She then confronted Mydeimos on the lack of action from the detachment, offering them their desired dignity within the city should Mydeimos and Phainon join the Flame-Chase Journey. In Light Calendar Year 4931, Aglaea passed away during the hours before Era Nova, with her efforts succeeded by Cyrene and Phainon. Her death, and the deaths of everyone they held dear, helped motivate the duo from Aedes Elysiae to stand up to Lygus, initiating the Eternal Recurrence.^[2]

Eternal Recurrences

In all known Eternal Recurrences to feature Aglaea, she was born into a family of Mnestia devotees, taking up garment making as her "beautiful" art. She eventually moved to Okhema, creating her weaving workshop within the city.

Eternal Recurrence #1

Following the Imperator Cerydra's announcement detailing the decree of the Flame-Chase Journey, Khaslana appeared in Okhema, seeking an audience with the Imperator. Though he passed Hysilens' initial questioning, Aglaea and Tribbie were called upon nonetheless to help with further interrogation. Through this, Khaslana revealed the demigod prophecy given to Tribios and the truth behind Era Nova, winning council with Cerydra. The Imperator agreed to let Khaslana slay the Titans on his own and claim their Coreflames, sparing Aglaea and other Chrysos Heirs besides Tribios from becoming the demigods. At an unknown point in time, Aglaea was swallowed by the black tide.^[3]

Eternal Recurrence #309,785

At the request of Castorice, Aglaea and Anaxagoras worked together to find a way to retain the remnant sanity of Polyxia, the mortal form of Thanatos. They were successful in their endeavours, which allowed Polyxia (as Netherwing) and Castorice to create a flower shop known as "Spring of the Underworld."^[4]

Eternal Recurrence #4,048,128

The Flame-Chase Journey is completed perfectly, with the Coreflames of Ocean, Earth, Strife, Death and Sky reclaimed. After their victory, Cerydra used her demigod abilities to modify an unknown law, allowing everyone to obtain what they deemed a perfect ending. Aglaea's perfect ending was the creation of a successful weaving workshop, which became the talk of Okhema. There was no Era Nova in this recurrence, and the fate of Aglaea is left ambiguous.^[5]

Eternal Recurrence #6,269,299

In the Eternal Recurrence where Talanton fell on Spirit Day and Zagreus scooped up their divine authority, Aglaea was born into poverty, as her people had long since lost their riches to the Law of Gambling. In an attempt to win back her rightful dues, Aglaea challenged the "Wind of Dolos," Cifera, to a bet. The stakes of the bet did not matter, only if a golden laurel leaf would float by the young Aglaea in thirty seconds. Despite Cifera stealing away the only golden leaf nearby, Aglaea still won by adding her own leaf at the last second. Despite Cifera complaining about the bet having no stakes, she was nonetheless intrigued by Aglaea's true bet: "Aglaea" against "Cifera." To that end, Cifera took young Aglaea in, passing her a pair of golden boots so she would not go barefoot.^[6]

Eternal Recurrence #8,668,666

During tests regarding Little Ica's appetite, a genetic mutation caused for the pegasus to become eternally ravenous. Due to the scholars of the Grove of Epiphany lacking a cure, Hyacine and Ica left Okhema to find one themselves. After some years had passed, rumors of a "Twilight Knight" begun to circle, reaching Aglaea back in Okhema. When said Twilight Knight came to visit the city, Aglaea was surprised to find they and Hyacine were one in the same.^[7]

Eternal Recurrence #33,550,334

At the precipice of Era Nova, Aglaea and Phainon went together into the Vortex of Genesis. Though Aglaea was happy to see the Era Nova on the horizon, her golden threads alerted her to the presence of the Flame Reaver and the black tide's encroachment. With a brief word of encouragement and a moment of farewell, Aglaea went off to face the Flame Reaver alone.^[2]

Eternal Recurrence #33,550,336

Early Life

Aglaea was born into a family who worshipped Mnestia, taking up garment weaving as her "beautiful" art of choice. As a child, she climbed trees in the Grove of Epiphany and lounged in bathhouses to gain inspiration for her works. She dashed across rooftops and meadows to understand the scents of the air around them, weaving flower fragrances into her designs. Her works slowly begun to spark fashion trends in Okhema, yet she questioned if what she did was truly "beauty." Upon consulting with a priestess of Mnestia, she was left with a question; "Aren't 'beauty' and 'beautiful' the same?"^[8]

As time wore on, Aglaea moved to collect scraps of destroyed uniforms, recycling them into her designs or keeping them separate as mementos. The aristocratic views of nobility begun to grate on Aglaea's nerves, with a brash decision leading to her destroying some of her lavish creations in fury.^[9] Around Year 3870 of the Light Calendar, Aglaea was either found by or joined the forces of Cerydra, becoming a member of the first Flame-Chase. Through this journey, adversity taught her what beauty's role seemed to be, aided by the bitter defeat the Flame-Chase Army suffered against an unknown enemy.

Ascension

In or around Year 3930, Aglaea received the Coreflame of Romance from Mnestia, allowing her to ascend as the demigod of Romance. Her prophecy was granted alongside the power to weave golden threads; "You shall have your final bath in warm and radiant gold."^[10]

Around that point, Cerydra disappeared, choosing Aglaea as her successor. In this period, Aglaea found a petty thief from Dolos known as Cifera, earning her favour and eventually adopting her. When the death of Hysilens followed the Imperator's departure, Aglaea blamed herself for the loss, but shouldered the burden of leadership regardless.^[11] Using her gifts from Mnestia, she wove her golden threads and nymphs throughout Okhema, eliminating all threats to the Holy City.^[12]

Around Year 4031, Aglaea helped Cifera with the task of gathering the Three Hundred Rogues of Dolos for her demigod of Trickery trial. When Zagreus descended on Spirit Day thanks to the efforts of the Rogues, Aglaea trapped the Titan in her golden threads, ultimately allowing Cifera to do whatever with Zagreus.^[13] At an unknown period around this time, Cifera used her demigod powers to lie about the longevity of the Dawn Device (disguised as priest Atticus), soon fleeing Okhema to avoid the lie being unravelled by Aglaea's powers.^[14] Aglaea originally deemed Cifera's flight a mere "silly prank," but as time wore on, she started to believe she had done something to scare Cifera away.^[15]

Over the next few centuries, Aglaea slowly acquired more Chrysos Heirs under her protection. During the early days of the Second Flame-Chase, the Council of Elders found Castorice and assigned her under Aglaea. Despite Aglaea's realization of this being a political move, she still welcomed Castorice into the Flame-Chase.^[16][17] Sometime later, Aglaea allied with Mydeimos, the exiled Prince of Castrum Kremnos, working with the Kremnoan Detachment for the sake of Flame-Chase.^[18] Under unclear circumstances, she also met Anaxagoras, Phainon, and Hyacine, sharing a strained relationship with the Sage of the Nousporists.

Arrival of The Trailblaze

In Year 4931, Month of Balance, Aglaea sent Phainon and Tribbie to the Abyss of Fate to save refugees from the march of Nikador, the Titan of Strife. Upon their return with both refugees and outsiders (Dan Heng and the Trailblazer), they found Okhema under attack from Nikador. Phainon, Trailblazer and Dan Heng fought through their forces to reach Aglaea in the Marmoreal Palace, aided by Castorice and Mydei at different points. Once there, Aglaea and Phainon worked to slay the false body of Nikador attacking the city, forcing its minions into retreat. After the battle, she properly greeted the Astral Express duo, offering a tour and an explanation of their world.^[19]

As they walked through the palace, Aglaea accepted Dan Heng's request to place a Space Anchor as a sort of "Trailblaze ritual." Her original plan was to use a bath sprite to briefly explain some of Amphoreus' history in a sanitised way, yet Traiblazer's feelings of discomfort made her change tactics. Taking over in a private meeting, Aglaea explained the full details of the Flame-Chase Journey and the Chrysos Heirs to the Trailblazer. After her explanation, she bound them with a golden thread and had them swear to not tell any Amphorean about the existence of worlds beyond the sky.^[20]

Unfortunately, Damionis, when taking a photo for the Astral Express duo, scrolled through the gallery of March 7th's camera. Finding photos of other worlds compelled Damionis to link the folk tales of the Rosy Celestial Maiden to March 7th, thus revealing the existence of other worlds to the populace. Despite the pair not intending for this to happen, Aglaea called them to the Vortex of Genesis and interrogated them regardless, using Castorice as an executioner should their responses displease her. The Astral Express duo were only spared from proper punishment thanks to Phainon's character reference.^[21]

To amend for their "broken promise," Aglaea requested one of the two go with Phainon and Mydei to Castrum Kremnos in order to slay Nikador for their Coreflame. Trailblazer was the one who was chosen for that task, whilst Dan Heng stayed in Okhema under Aglaea and Tribbie's supervision. After finding Nikador was fully immortal and using his own deaths to power a weapon capable of destroying the Holy City, Trailblazer and Phainon returned to Okhema with the news. Needing a solution, Aglaea sent them to Oronyx with Castorice and Dan Heng, and begun scheming on how to deflect the weapon's power with Tribbie, Trianne and Trinnon.^[22] Whilst they were gone, Aglaea was confronted by Caenis, a Cleaner and member of the Council of Elders, who warned her against acting the emergency authority granted by the Council.^[23]

When Nikador's immortality was broken thanks to the blessing of Time within Mem, Aglaea and Tribbie enacted their plan, using the Century Gates to banish Nikador's attack away from Okhema. Upon the return of the heroes with the Coreflame of Strife, Aglaea congratulated Phainon for the success.^[24] After a day had passed, Aglaea oversaw Phainon's attempt in the Trial of Strife, ordering Mydei and Trailblazer to pull him out once it was clear Phainon had failed.^[25][26]

Emergence of the Flame Reaver

Following the failed trial of Phainon, Aglaea called the Trailblazer and Dan Heng for a meeting to give thanks, with Hyacine arriving soon after. With a brief pause to allow Hyacine to befriend them, Aglaea explained her intention to send Trianne and Castorice to the Grove to gain information on their black tide studies and the Grove's stance on trading for the Coreflame of Reason. Aglaea further suggested Trailblazer join Castorice and Trianne for the sake of tourism, which Trailblazer accepted. Before they departed, Aglaea gifted the Trailblazer a Weft of golden thread to use as a sign of her authority and protection. A few days later, Aglaea learnt that an injured citizen Hyacine had found at the city gates was a Grove scholar, realizing the Grove had been attacked by the black tide.^[27]

While waiting for news from Trianne, Aglaea and Tribbie took a moment to discuss Trianne's worsening state, though neither had a solution for her inevitable death. Their musings were interrupted by commotion in the bathhouses caused by Mydei and Phainon, who had decided to have a competition to see who could endure the bath's heat the longest. Annoyed by the "spectacle of folly," Aglaea ordered the young men to lead customers they had impacted to their homes, before taking her own bath with Tribbie and Hyacine. This blissful rest was interrupted by Krateros, a Kremnoan loyal to Mydei, who had kidnapped Trinnon to force his way into the Vortex of Genesis. Aglaea's judgement against Krateros' intrusion was interrupted by both Trinnon and Mydei, with Trinnon promising to use Oronyx's authority to let Krateros see the true source of the prophecy.^[28]

A short while after the Grove expedition group returned, Tribbie, Trianne and Trinnon embarked to the Abyss of Fate to speak with Oronyx about the prophecy. They were ambushed by the Flame Reaver instead, with Trianne using the last of her power to send Tribbie and Trinnon back to Okhema, where they were found by Phainon and Hyacine. Realizing the severity of the situation, Aglaea sent reinforcements to the Abyss of Fate to look for Trianne, while recalling the Chrysos Heirs to Okhema.^[29]

After learning of the details regarding the attack, Aglaea authorised the plan to trap the Flame Reaver in the past of Castrum Kremnos. She sent Castorice to reason with the Council of Elders, who had begun making moves to wrest the emergency powers back from the Chrysos Heirs. After the defeat of the Flame Reaver and the retrieval of the Coreflame of Time, Aglaea authorised Trailblazer to undergo the Trial of Time. ^[30] She later bid farewell to Mydei and attended the funeral of Trianne. ^[31][32]

The Council's Machinations

For his work against the Flame Reaver, Aglaea allowed Anaxagoras time to find a way to de-couple himself from the Coreflame. In the meantime, her focus was drawn to the Trailblazer's Trial of Time, which they succeeded in for the most part. The one flaw of the trial, as Mem revealed to the Chrysos Heirs, was the fact that the Trailblazer had been dead since they landed in Amphoreus, and only had fifteen days until they would pass away. Aglaea, with knowledge of that and Castorice's hunt for Thanatos, sent word to Cipher via Bartholos asking for her help. To make matters more complicated, Aglaea also sensed Anaxagoras had gone to speak with the Council of Elders, adding to her anxieties about Caenis and the Council.^[33]

Anaxagoras had been using the Council to gain access to Kephale's body, from which he extracted the Titan's memories as part of his Trial of Reason. Through this, he discovered the nature of the demigods, as well as the true identity of Thanatos and her relationship with Castorice. He subsequently relayed this information to Castorice and publicly opposed Aglaea to buy her time, allowing both of them to pursue their respective lifelong goals while working against the Council.^[34]

Before Aglaea could address Anaxagoras' movements, Cipher arrived in Okhema. After relaying the fate of Trianne and the request of Castorice, Cipher made a bet with Aglaea. If she could convince Castorice and Trailblazer to not go to Styxia, Aglaea would give her the entire Okheman treasury. If Cipher lost, she would return her security deposit to Aglaea and take the two Chrysos Heirs to Styxia as intended. Naturally, Aglaea accepted the bet, fully anticipating Cipher's loss.^[35] Before their meeting was adjourned, Aglaea made Cipher promise to deliver a message to Castorice at the trial's beginning, telling her both to live and die as a human, and to follow her own heart.^[17]

With Cipher's bet lost and the two Thanatos hunters absent, Aglaea focused her time on training Phainon to deal with the Council of Elders. While doing this, Aglaea took the time to sit down and write out her final will to Phainon, as her medicine had finally begun to fail.^[36] She watched the debate between Anaxa, the Council and Phainon days later, refusing to intervene until the very end. When Anaxagoras voted in favor of the Flame-Chase and revealed that Caenis and the Council had let him experiment on Kephale, Aglaea was assigned the duty of overseeing the judgment against Anaxagoras. Despite her own hesitancies, the crowd voted for his death, which she ordained in the name of Talanton.^[37]

In the hour prior to Anaxagoras' execution, Aglaea finally revealed to him the truth of her condition; her humanity had been nearly turned to ash, and she was only holding on until Phainon was ready for leadership. Anaxagoras was understandably shocked by her condition but agreed with her assessments on Phainon. He further realized many of their past misunderstandings could have been solved had she revealed her condition earlier, yet understood why she chose to keep it hidden. Once the Coreflame of Death had been submitted to the Vortex by Trailblazer, Aglaea and the remaining heirs watched Anaxagoras rip the Coreflame from his body, passing the Trial of Reason and dying with a victorious laugh.^[38]

Assassination

In Year 4932, Aglaea and the Chrysos Heirs turned their attention to Aquila, whilst Dan Heng and Theoros Lycurgus worked to fix the Astral Express car.

While all the heirs were off on their duties, Caenis led the Cleaners to attack them across Amphoreus, allowing her to ambush Aglaea. Blaming her for the failed vote and seeing her as the ultimate evil, Caenis threatened a disabled child Aglaea had befriended to force her compliance. Realizing that she was out of time, Aglaea openly wondered if she would be mourned by Cipher, allowing herself to be stabbed in the heart by a unique blade. Her body fell from the top of the Marmoreal Palace baths, landing in front of Hyacine and other bathhouse visitors.^[39]

Legacy

Despite Hyacine's attempts to revive Aglaea, the Lady Goldweaver passed away at the foot of the baths. At the moment of her death, two nymphs were activated and mobilized to Chartonus and Cipher respectively.

In the nymph sent to Cipher via an unaware Bartholos, Aglaea apologised for whatever she did that scared Cipher away centuries ago, lamenting that her silence likely killed Hysilens all those years ago. With little time left, she pleaded with Cipher to return to Okhema in order to help Phainon, emphasising that they could not complete the Flame-Chase without her. After that, she bid Cipher goodbye, the nymph losing its power immediately afterwards.^[11]

Chartonus' encounter with the nymph was far simpler, with Aglaea asking him to place her remaining divinity within a bracelet given to her by the child the Cleaners' threatened. ^[36] This bracelet and its remnant divinity later saved Phainon, Hyacine, Dan Heng and Trailblazer when they nearly fell into golden lava fighting Aquila. Once it had exhausted its power, the bracelet fell into the lava, fulfilling the prophecy given to Aglaea a millennia ago.^[40]

An apparition of Aglaea was unconsciously forged by Cipher during the Trickery demigod's final moments, assuring her that she had saved Amphoreus.^[14]

Eternal Recurrence #33,550,337

Background

Aglaea was born in Year 3860, to a family devoted to Mnestia within the Grove of Epiphany.^[41] Taking up garment making as her "beautiful" art, she joined the Flame-Chase Journey and became fast friends with Hysilens and Tribios before or around Year 3930. She eventually met and befriended Cipher, inviting her into her life like she had in the previous recurrence.^[42]

When the Siege of the Grove of Epiphany claimed the Coreflame of Romance, Aglaea gained custody over the divine gift, resolving to ask Mnestia for "for eyes that can see everything." Nevertheless, the idea of becoming a demigod had made Aglaea uneasy, leaving her to agonize over her destiny for some years.

Meeting the Trailblazer

In Year 3960, the Trailblazer and Cyrene encountered Cerydra, Hysilens and Tribbie during their Siege in Janusopolis, with Cerydra inviting them back to Okhema. Aglaea was quick to greet the outlanders and immediately deduced that her alternate version was quite different to herself. Despite this, she still vowed to make Trailblazer a new outfit, deeming their clothes as "rags" unfit for their title.

Aglaea later met the Trailblazer and Cyrene again when sent to talk to Hysilens. Aglaea could not help but chide the Sea Siren for not burning incense for the two outlanders, claiming she chose to "sully" her clothes with the reek of fish. Dux Goldweaver eventually revealed she had been sent to inform Hysilens to prepare for the victory banquet, which Hysilens already expected. Before she departed, Aglaea learnt from the Trailblazer what the previous Aglaea had done with her gift, finding solace in the idea of weaving destiny.

Aglaea and Tribbie briefly chatted with Trailblazer and Cyrene at the banquet but otherwise remained unconnected to that night's events.^[42]

Ascencion and Death

After the exile of the Trailblazer by Lycurgus, Aglaea witnessed Cerydra's declaration of war against the former Theoros. During the hours before the attack on Phagousa, Cerydra held a private meeting with her and Tribie, where the Imperator forbade them from joining the army's march. Aglaea, to her surprise, was chosen as Cerydra's successor, respecting her wish to not openly mourn her loss. After Cerydra's death was reported, Aglaea took over the Okheman Alliance and ascended to demigod of Romance.^[43]

In Year 4160, the Ladonian Army led by Lycurgus attacked Okhema in order to claim the Coreflame of Worldbearing. When faced with the question of how to defend it, Cyrene relayed a message from Oronyx telling them to pass the Coreflame forward in time. In Year 4210, Aglaea and ninety-thousand others gave their lives to protect Okhema, falling at the hands of Lycurgus and his army.^[44]

Legacy

Aglaea was succeeded as leader of the Okheman Alliance by Castorice in Year 4160, then Cipher and Tribbie in Year 4253. Her memory was witnessed by the Trailblazer in Year 4931, nearly eight centuries after her death.^[44] At the end of the cycle, an apparition of Aglaea appeared in the Demiurge Matrix, passing on her wish to protect the world's right to defiance with her "Romance."^[45]

The Final Cycle

In the Final Cycle, Aglaea ascended as the Titan of Romance.^[46] In the Year 4931, Aglaea appeared in mortal form within the Ruins of Time, with all memories of her lives in the Eternal Recurrence. Reuniting with her allies, she chose to turn herself into memories, allowing Cyrene to break Phainon's "Ego."^[47]

During the climax of the battle against Irontomb, Aglaea and the other Flame-Chase Titans used their existences to help enact a cosmic-sized Era Nova on the world, reversing the damage done by the Lord Ravager.^[48] Aglaea appeared once more on the Astral Express, where she took the time to reflect on all that has happened.^[49] Afterwards, she and the other heirs returned to As I've Written, awaiting the rebirth of Amphoreus in reality.^[50]

Cosmic Data Roaming

Aglaea and her allies were able to briefly contact Trailblazer during the events of Cosmic Data Roaming.

During this period, she began writing and filming a documentary about Amphoreus with the aid of Castorice. She also tasked Hyacine with supervising Anaxagoras' astronautical research with the fairies of the Membrance Maze, due to a previous incident of Anaxagoras strapping himself into the cockpit of an experimental rocket. Finally, after sending Hysilens a package of clothing, she received some golden thread from Cipher, promising to make her new clothing as well.^[51]

Etymology

• Aglaea (Greek: Ἀγλαΐα Aglaḯa, "splendor") is one of the three Charites goddesses in Greek mythology.
