Damage
Last updated 2026-09-08
When characters or enemies attack their targets, they deal damage (abbreviated as DMG) based on their own and their target's attributes.
There are eight damage types: seven Elemental and one Physical. The way damage is calculated depends on the type of reaction, or lack thereof, that causes it. A single instance of damage cannot exceed 20,000,000.
Damage Formula Components
All damage dealt starts with a base damage source. This base damage source ("Base Source") can either be an ability scaling multiplied by a Stat (ATK, DEF, Max HP, or Elemental Mastery depending on the ability), the Level Multiplier, or a flat number like from the 4-Piece Bonus of Ocean-Hued Clam.
After this, different components are combined with the base damage depending on the type of damage dealt. The table below summarizes which common components apply to which damage types, and in what order. Unless otherwise indicated, these components are multiplied together:
| Damage Formula | Base Source |
Base Multiplier |

General Damage Formula
For damage dealt by Talents, Constellations, Weapon passives, and enemy attacks—excluding directly dealt Lunar and Stellar Glimmar DMG, which uses a separate damage formula—damage is calculated as:
Additionally, when the damage dealt triggers an amplifying or Catalyze reaction, it is modified with an additional multiplicative "Amplifying Multiplier" term for amplifying reactions or an addition to the "Additive Base DMG Bonus" for Catalyze reactions. For transformative and indirect Lunar and Stellar Glimmer reactions, the reaction DMG is dealt through a separate damage instance that uses the Transformative or the indirect Lunar and Stellar Glimmer formula for its calculation.
Base DMG
Base DMG is the amount of damage resulting from multiplying the ability's scaling with the corresponding stat, before accounting for any damage modifiers.
Unless otherwise specified in the skill attributes, abilities will scale with ATK. Some abilities may scale with more than one stat.
Base DMG Multiplier
Base DMG Multiplier is directly multiplicative with Base DMG. It can be obtained through:

NaviaWhen a character in the party obtains an Elemental Shard created from the Crystallize reaction, or when they trigger the Lunar-Crystallize reaction, Navia will gain 1 Crystal Shrapnel stack. Navia can have up to 6 stacks of Crystal Shrapnel at once. Each time Crystal Shrapnel gain is triggered, the duration of the Crystal Shrapnel stacks you already have will be reset. Through the Lunar-Crystallize reaction, Navia will gain up to 1 Crystal Shrapnel stack every second.
When she fires, Navia will consume all Crystal Shrapnel stacks and open her elegant yet lethal Gunbrella, firing multiple Rosula Shardshots that can penetrate opponents, dealing Geo DMG to opponents hit.
When 0/1/2/3 or more stacks of Crystal Shrapnel are consumed, 5/7/9/11 Rosula Shardshots will be fired respectively. The more Rosula Shardshots that strike a single opponent, the greater the DMG dealt to them. When all 11 Rosula Shardshots strike, 200% of the original amount of DMG is dealt.
In addition, when more than 3 stacks of Crystal Shrapnel are consumed, every stack consumed beyond those 3 will increase the DMG dealt by this Gunbrella attack by an additional 15%.

DEF
Defense (abbreviated DEF) reduces incoming damage based on the following formula:
The incoming damage will then be multiplied by:
Alternatively, for enemies only:
- Enemy Defense is given as:
- Enemy Defense multiplier can be calculated as:
- where
RES
RES Multiplier vs RES
Targets have different Resistances (abbreviated as RES) to Elemental and Physical DMG. There are ways to increase or decrease these resistances. Total RES is calculated as:
The RES multiplier varies non-linearly with the RES percentage. Depending on the value of in the interval below, the corresponding is as follows:
| Formula | Interval |
|---|---|
| RES < 0 | |
| 0 ≤ RES < 0.75 | |
| RES ≥ 0.75 |
For example, an enemy with 10% RES (i.e., 0.1) will have a RES multiplier.
For a table of enemy RES, see Resistance#Enemy RES.
CRIT
If the damage scores a Critical Hit, then the CRIT DMG multiplier will be applied:
Elemental Reaction Damage
Elemental Reactions may be categorized into four groups:
- Transformative Reactions that deal additional elemental damage, calculated separately, when triggered.
- Amplifying Reactions that increase damage by adding a damage multiplier ("Amplifying Multiplier") to the hit that triggered the reaction.
- Catalyze Reactions that increase damage by adding an Additive Base DMG Bonus to the hit that triggered the reaction.
- Lunar Reactions and Stellar Glimmer Reactions that can be dealt directly, or through a separate damage instance that takes into account the stats of all contributing characters.
Elemental reaction damage is characterized by its inclusion of the Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier, which includes a damage bonus derived from Elemental Mastery ("% EM Bonus") and Reaction DMG Bonus ("% Reaction Bonus"), which can be increased by certain effects such as the 4-piece set bonuses of the Crimson Witch of Flames and Thundering Fury Artifact sets.
Note that triggering multiple reactions in quick succession can cause the reaction's pop-up text to be hidden by the game, even though the reaction occurred and dealt damage successfully.
Transformative Reaction Damage
The transformative reactions are Overloaded, Shattered, Electro-Charged, Superconduct, Swirl, Burning, Bloom, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon.
The damage dealt by such reactions scales with the triggering party's level and Elemental Mastery (EM), and is reduced by the target's Resistances. Unlike normal damage, this damage is not based on the triggering party's ATK, cannot score CRIT Hits by default, is not increased by regular DMG Bonus, and ignores target's DEF.[Note 4]
Additionally, the stats of the party that applies the initial element do not affect the reaction damage; the only party taken into account is the one that applies the second element (or third element with Hyperbloom, Burgeon), which triggers the reaction.
Transformative Reaction DMG is calculated as:
Elemental Mastery increases the damage of transformative reactions by a certain percentage ("% EM Bonus"). (See Elemental Mastery for more details.) EM Bonus is calculated as:
Certain abilities can allow transformative reactions to CRIT. If the damage scores a Critical Hit, the reaction-specific CRIT DMG multiplier is also applied:[Note 5]
And the DMG dealt is instead:
It is possible for transformative reactions that further apply an element (Swirl and Burning) to further trigger reactions. For example, when Anemo is applied to a target affected by Pyro, a Pyro Swirl is triggered, and this can hit nearby targets that are affected by Hydro. In this case, the amplifying reaction adds an additional multiplier ("Amplifying Multiplier") to the outgoing damage dealt to the target affected by Hydro. For amplifying and additive reactions, the damage is calculated based on the original reaction's damage as described in a later section.
For the base damage of transformative reactions per Level, see Elemental Reaction/Level Scaling.
Amplifying Reaction Damage
The amplifying reactions are Vaporize and Melt. Amplifying reactions add extra multipliers to the damage of the attack that triggered the reaction based on the triggering element, the Elemental Mastery of the triggering character, and Reaction DMG Bonus (which can be obtained from certain effects such as the 4-piece set bonus of the Crimson Witch of Flames Artifact).
The additional amplifying multiplier is as follows:
The damage after the reaction is accounted for is:
- Where "DMG" is the original damage before accounting for the amplifying reaction. This can be the damage dealt by Talents, Constellations, or enemy attacks (in which case DMG comes from the General Damage Formula), or from an instance of separate reaction DMG (see Chain Reaction Damage).
Elemental Mastery increases the damage of amplifying reactions by a certain percentage ("% EM Bonus"). (See Elemental Mastery for more details.) This can be approximated as follows:
Talents that only apply the elemental status will deal no damage upon triggering an amplifying reaction.
Catalyze Damage Bonus
The Spread and Aggravate reactions add an Additive Base DMG Bonus to attacks. Similar to transformative reactions, the damage bonus scales with the triggering party's level, Elemental Mastery, and relevant Reaction DMG Bonus.
The Additive Base DMG Bonus is calculated as:
The final Additive Base DMG Bonus for the attack is then:
Beyond the additional Additive Base DMG Bonus, damage is calculated using the General Damage Formula for damage dealt by Talents, Constellations, or enemy attacks, or the relevant reaction DMG formula for damage from an instance of separate reaction DMG (see Chain Reaction Damage).
Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction Damage
Lunar Reactions and Stellar Glimmer Reactions share the same damage formula. The Lunar Reactions are Lunar-Charged, Lunar-Bloom, and Lunar-Crystallize. The Stellar Glimmer Reactions are Stellar-Conduct and Stellar Swirl.
Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction damage can be dealt either directly by a character's talent or through a separate instance of damage, similar to a Transformative Reaction, that takes into account the stats of all contributing characters, including their (standard, non-transformative) CRIT stats.[1][2]
- The EM Bonus for Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reactions is as follows:
- An extra Lunar Reaction Base DMG Bonus is provided by certain Moonsign Benediction Passives, and an extra Stellar Glimmer Reaction Base DMG Bonus is provided by Stellar Jubilee Passives. These are not to be confused with ordinary Reaction Bonus, which applies additively to the EM Bonus.

Indirect Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction DMG caused by applying elements can only be dealt by Lunar-Charged, Lunar-Crystallize, and Stellar Swirl, not Lunar-Bloom and Stellar-Conduct. For Lunar-Bloom, the Dendro Cores and Bountiful Cores created via Lunar-Bloom are identical to those created via Bloom, and the DMG dealt by them is not considered Lunar-Bloom DMG.
The DMG calculation of Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction DMG triggered by applying elements is done in two steps:[1][2]
- An individual calculation is performed for all characters who have applied the reaction's elements to contribute to the reaction:[Note 6]
- Where the elements applied are:
- Hydro and Electro for Lunar-Charged
- Hydro and Geo for Lunar-Crystallize
- Cryo[Note 7] and Anemo for Stellar Swirl
- The individual DMG values are then ranked from highest to lowest, and combined into the final DMG value as follows:
If there are fewer than 4 participants, the corresponding entries in the above formula are omitted without changing the multipliers of the remaining entries. Whether the final Lunar or Stellar Glimmer DMG is considered a CRIT hit (such as for the purpose of activating Favonius Series Windfall passives) is determined by whether the highest individual DMG was CRIT.
Since indirect Cryo Stellar Swirl DMG can apply Cryo, it is possible for it to further trigger reactions. The damage is calculated based on the original reaction's damage as described in a later section.
Direct
Direct Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction DMG can be dealt through all of the Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reactions. Note that despite not being triggered by a reaction, direct Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction DMG is still considered reaction DMG, and thus benefits from EM and Reaction Bonus.
The DMG calculation of Lunar and Stellar Glimmer Reaction DMG dealt directly by a character without triggering a reaction is as follows:[1][2]
For Stellar-Conduct damage, the Base Reaction Coefficient scales with the number of recorded Cryo and Electro hits. If none are recorded, the multiplier is . But if 1 or more are recorded, it instead starts at and increases by for each recorded hit until a maximum of 12 are accounted for.
Chain Reaction Damage
Unlike most reactions, Swirl, indirect Stellar Swirl, and Burning can apply their corresponding elements and are therefore able to trigger further reactions.
These further reactions use the stats of the character who triggered the initial reaction (including the character's normal CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG for Lunar Reactions). For Stellar Swirl, the Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier of the character with the highest Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier (as calculated from their Elemental Mastery and Reaction DMG Bonus) is considered for the Amplifying Multiplier.[3][4]
DMG dealt is modified as follows:
- For Amplifying Reactions:
- The "Amplifying Multiplier" is applied to the original reaction damage:
- For Aggravate:
- The Catalyze additional damage is added to the "Reaction Additive Base DMG Bonus":
- For Transformative, Lunar, and Stellar Glimmer Reactions:
- The same damage calculations in the previous sections are applied.
Reaction Base DMG Bonus
Reaction Base DMG Bonus is a damage multiplier that can apply to Lunar and Stellar Glimmer reactions. Despite its name, it is not to be confused with the Reaction Additive Base DMG Bonus.

Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier
The Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier is the multiplier that adds together the DMG Bonus provided by Elemental Mastery ("% EM Bonus") based on the reaction/damage type and Reaction DMG Bonus ("% Reaction Bonus").
The formula for the Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier is:
The following abilities or equipments provide Reaction DMG Bonus:
Reaction Additive Base DMG Bonus
Reaction Additive Base DMG Bonus is a fixed amount of bonus DMG added to the base DMG of reactions. Unlike the Additive Base DMG Bonus from the General Damage Formula, Reaction Additive Base DMG Bonus is added after the Reaction DMG Bonus Multiplier is accounted for.
The following abilities provide Reaction Additive Base DMG Bonus:
| Ability | Icon | Amount | Damage Type |

Transformative Reaction CRIT
Transformative Reaction CRIT is a fixed amount of CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG applied by some abilities to transformative reactions. If the damage scores a Critical Hit, then the CRIT DMG multiplier will be applied. Fixed CRIT Rate from different sources for the same reaction can stack.
The following abilities allow transformative reactions to score Critical Hits:
| Ability | Icon | Amount | Damage Type |

True DMG
True DMG[Note 8] is DMG that ignores the target's DEF, RES, and Damage Reduction, but does not ignore shields. However, True DMG can be increased by Melt and Vaporize, but not Spread and Aggravate.
Note that True DMG is not to be confused with HP Loss, as HP Loss is not considered damage at all.
Notable sources of True DMG include:
- Collision Damage
- Certain Ley Line Disorders
- Electrogranum Coordinated Attacks
- Thunderstones
- Kamuijima Cannons
- Mountainators
- Unique Rock Pillars
- Xenochromatic Creature abilities
Other Damage-Modifying Effects
Other than those specified above, there are certain less common mechanics that will affect damage:
- Bow users have damage dropoff on their aimed shots based on the amount of time that an arrow travels in the air. The damage dropoff multiplier is applied multiplicatively with the entire damage formula.
- Dehya's Elemental Skill multiplicatively reduces DMG that characters receive. This also applies to Transformative Reaction DMG and True DMG.
- La Signora has a mechanic that prevents her from taking a single instance of DMG that exceeds a percentage of her Max HP. DMG exceeding that threshold will be nullified.
Snapshotting
Snapshotting refers to the ability of certain abilities to retain their buffs from the time they are cast. For example, Xiangling's Pyronado will be buffed for its whole duration when cast inside Bennett's Fantastic Voyage field, even if one walks outside the field or the field expires.
Sample Calculation
Consider the following sequence of events:

Mona is Level 70 with the following Attributes: Attack is 1500, Elemental Mastery is 150, Crit DMG is 80% and Hydro DMG Bonus is 40%.
Mona applies Wet on a Level 75 Fatui Agent.
Sucrose with 4 piece Viridescent Venerer Swirls the enemy. This decreases the Fatui Agent's Hydro RES by 40% (i.e., 0.4).- The Fatui Agent's Wet status wears off.

Klee with
Constellation 2, Explosive Frags, deals Pyro DMG, thus applying Pyro on the Fatui Agent and decreasing their DEF by 23%.
Mona casts
Level 6 Stellaris Phantasm, triggering Vaporize for no damage and clearing the Pyro status.
Klee deals Pyro DMG to the Fatui Agent, triggering Illusory Bubble, which gives a 52% DMG Bonus and deals Critical Hydro DMG and Vaporize.
We can calculate the damage dealt by Mona in the final step as follows:
Therefore,
Stellaris Phantasm will deal 52247 Hydro DMG.
Notes
- ↑ Calculated from Elemental Mastery and Reaction DMG Bonus.
- ↑ Additive reaction damage consists of base "non-reaction" damage and a damage bonus added by the elemental reaction. This damage bonus is added as Additive Base DMG Bonus. So, after the "Additive Base Bonus" column, the "reaction" part of additive reaction damage uses the same components as the "non-reaction" part.
- ↑ Transformative reactions do not use standard CRIT Rate/DMG. Instead, they use Transformative Reaction CRIT, which is initially 0 and can only be increased through certain character abilities.
- ↑ Transformative Reactions do have a DMG multiplier based on DEF:
However, the difference it causes is so extremely minuscule that it is usually ignored. - ↑ This is currently only achievable with Nahida's 2nd Constellation, Lauma's 1st Ascension Passive and Yumemizuki Mizuki's 6th Constellation.
- ↑ For the final damage of Stellar Swirl, the contributors include any characters that helped trigger a Stellar Swirl in the time between the final damage and the initial reaction.
- ↑ This also includes the creator of a Cryo-triggered Freeze Aura.
- ↑ Term introduced in Version 2.3.
Change History
- The upper limit for single instances of damage was increased from 9,999,999 to 20,000,000.
- Increased DMG multipliers of the following Elemental Reactions:
- Superconduct: 0.5 to 1.5
- Electro-Charged: 1.2 to 2
- Overloaded: 2 to 2.75
- Shatter: 1.5 to 3
- Added an upper limit of 9,999,999 to single instances of damage.
Elemental Mastery bonus damage (%) vs Elemental Mastery (EM)
Version 1.6 buffed values shown in red; Version 1.5 in blue
- Shields generated by Crystallize, elemental reaction damage (Electro-Charged, Superconduct, Overloaded, Swirl, and Shatter), and the damage bonus for the same elemental reactions were buffed.
- The Elemental Mastery bonus was increased (relatively) by +75% at low levels increasing to +90% at high levels.[5]
- The exact changes are not yet certain:
- According to one analysis base Elemental Reaction damage was reduced (by ~30%) below level 60, but above level 60 slightly increased, gaining up to ~ +15% by level 80, and +20% by level 90. Before and after buff base damage was roughly equal at level 60.[5]
- An alternative analysis gave no change below level 60 for base damage, but an increasing boost after - peaking at +20% at level 90.[6]
- The new formula for Elemental Mastery bonus has been estimated as 16EM/(EM+2000). This gives an increase in bonus of 170% to 200% increasing with EM value.[6]
- The net effect of these changes is minimal changes in damage at lower levels, but substantial increases in damage above level 60 - generally roughly up to doubled damage. (At level 90 between 1.4x and 2.2x damage, depending on EM.[6])
- The damage absorption of crystallize generated shields has also been significantly increased.
- According to one analysis the increase in base shield absorption strength was steadily increased from around level 30, reaching around +30% over the shield strength in v1.5.[6]
- Elemental mastery bonus formula for transformative reactions was changed from the following:
- "Snapshotting" for Elemental Mastery boosts to damage from the major elemental reactions (Shatter, Electro-Charged, Superconduct, Overloaded, and Swirl) was removed, and replaced with 'real-time' damage calculations.[7]
- All Geo shield damage absorption (Noelle, Zhongli, Crystallize) was altered from 250% Geo damage absorption to 150% mixed physical and elemental. Benefits from Geo Elemental Resonance and shields were also increase (+15% shield strength, +15% damage when shielded, reduced Geo resistance of attacked foes by 20% for 15seconds).[8]
- Elemental reactions caused by environmental objects was scaled to be that of 2 levels below the current World Level.
- The damage from the elemental reactions caused by environmental objects (grass, water etc.) was altered. The reaction damage from Overloaded from burning grass, or Electro-Shock from water bodies etc. was scaled to the current World Level, with a minimum of WL0 and maximum of WL4.
- Damage was released.
