Saurian Indwelling
Last updated 2026-09-10
Saurian Indwelling is an exploration mechanic in Natlan. It allows the player to indwell their spirit into Natlan Saurians or Spiritsconces and use different skills to assist them in traveling Natlan. In the Easybreeze Holiday Resort, the indwelling mechanic can also be used on Asha.
Overview
The player can indwell an adult Saurian enemy regardless of whether it is tolerant or aggressive towards the player. However, Saurians indwelled this way will not reward any Character EXP, Character and Weapon Enhancement Materials, or Mora and will respawn at their original location after 1 minute, even if the player is still indwelling the original spawn. Asha, unlike most indwellable Saurians, are friendly to the player. Assuming nothing happens that results in forcible ejection (see below), the player can indwell a Saurian or Asha indefinitely.
Some quest-related Saurians, like "Half-Baked"[1] can reject the indwelling. Attempting to indwell in such cases will display the system message "You feel a strong will reject your attempt at indwelling..."
While indwelling, the player cannot interact with the following:
In addition, while indwelling a Saurian, players who go near enemy Saurians will not cause them to aggravate, though they will be curious of their presence unless attacked, after which combat is initiated. Other enemies will follow normal aggravation rules. If the enemy Saurian is among a group of other non-Saurian enemies, they will likewise aggravate when the non-Saurian enemies do.
Spiritsconces
Spiritscones are small, colorful totems that can be found across Natlan as a helpful way for players to travel across specific areas without needing to find a related Saurian. These can be indwelled in the same manner as adult Saurians. Spiritsconces can occur naturally, but adult Saurian enemies will also leave Spiritsconces behind after being killed. All Spiritsconces will respawn at their original location after 15 seconds, even if the player is still indwelling a Saurian using the original spawn.
A Spiritsconce is also left behind after the player ends an indwelling without killing the Saurian. Up to four Spiritsconces left behind from terminated indwellings, or three if the player is currently indwelling a Saurian, may exist in the world at any given moment. When the limit is exceeded, the oldest Spiritsconce left behind from a terminated indwelling will be removed. The Saurian type does not matter. Indwelling a Saurian has a 4-second cooldown before indwelling another Saurian.
Asha also leave behind variant Spiritsconces when the player stops indwelling one.
Taking Damage and Healing
The amount of Fall DMG taken while indwelling is significantly reduced and static regardless of how far the player falls. Yumkasauri also take 50% reduced Fall DMG compared to other Saurians.
Indwelled creatures can be healed by:
- Standing near Everflame Seeds.
- Standing near a Teleport Waypoint or Statue of The Seven.
Using Phlogiston
The player can enhance the indwelled creature's movement by consuming Phlogiston. Individual indwellable creatures have their own Phlogiston meter, which they will deplete before consuming the player's own.
Phlogiston will be restored when:
- The indwelled creature stands near:
- The indwelled creature touches:
- Flaming Seed of Phlogiston
- Phlogiston Current (Qucusaurs only)
- The indwelled creature collects:
- The indwelled creature destroys:
Movement
A indwelled creature's movement can be impeded by terrain. Only Koholasaurs can swim in water and Liquid Phlogiston, while Tatankasaurs can also move across water if they are in a charging state. Asha can also walk on the surface of the water. Otherwise, Saurians that enter a body of water that is deep enough will automatically drown.
Yumkasaurs, who can glide across terrain with their grapple, can also scale cliff walls, but not as efficient compared to Tepetlisaurs. Similarly, Qucusaurs and Iktomisaurs are capable of flight, but Qucusaurs can change adjust their altitude, while Iktomisaurs can only glide downwards. Tatankasaurs can charge and collide into Pulverite. Indwellable creatures are not good at running under normal circumstances and are unable to dash i-frame incoming attacks, making them unfeasible for combat.
Asha can grapple, walk up vertical surfaces, leap upwards and float down slowly, and shoot paint balls, all without using Phlogiston. They can also glide rapidly over surfaces, though this does consume Phlogiston.
Exiting Indwelling State
The player can manually eject themselves from the indwelled creature by holding Q in a manner similar to the Waverider.
The player will be automatically ejected and leave a Spiritsconce behind if:
- The player teleports to any Teleport Waypoint.
- The player enters any Instance rooms (e.g., Speaker's Chamber).
Attempting to enter "People of the Springs" using Yumkasaurus
The player will be automatically ejected without leaving a Spiritsconce behind if:
- The indwelled creature is killed or drowned.
- The player leaves Natlan's boundaries or goes into Out of Bounds within Natlan.
- The player leaves the Easybreeze Holiday Resort while indwelling an Asha.
- The indwelled Saurian attempts to enter the main settlement of a tribe that is not its own (e.g., taking a Yumkasaurus to "People of the Springs" where only Koholasauri are allowed in).
- Before ejection, a warning "External Saurians: Entry Prohibited" will appear at the bottom of the screen, visibility is greatly reduced, and the symbol corresponding to the permitted Saurian will appear red on the sign prohibiting entry.
- The following is a list of subareas with the permitted Saurian species:

Gameplay Notes
- While indwelling a Saurian, players will receive different dialogue upon talking to NPCs: Saurians become understandable, while all other NPCs will only say "..." unless they currently have dialogue specific to a Quest, Hidden Exploration Objective, or Daily Commission.[preliminary conclusion]
- Some NPCs may have quest-locked dialogue that breaks this convention. For example, after completing Treasures and Collectors, Quipia offers the same dialogue regardless of whether the player is indwelling a Saurian or not.
- Indwelling a Saurian will only cause the player to leave combat if the Saurian they indwelled was the only aggravated enemy.

Trivia
- Indwelling is an ability the Traveler canonically possesses as the "Chosen of Dragons."[2] However, most people do not appear to be aware of the ability's existence.
- When Chasca saw an indwelt Qucusaur, she had a hunch that the Traveler had something to do with it, as it had their demeanor, but couldn't pinpoint exactly how and chose not to question them on it. Coyllur, who first unknowingly met the Traveler as the Qucusaur, found that they looked oddly familiar to her when they met in-person shortly after.[3]
- While looking for a cure for Abyssal Corrosion Syndrome, the Traveler indwelt an adult Qucusaur and returned to Atoco with Paimon and Iansan.[4]
- As a spirit in the Night Kingdom, Chuychu recruited the help of Saurian spirits for the Traveler to indwell, knowledge that she did not have in life.[5]
- The Traveler indwelt an adult Tepetlisaur a few times while searching for Antu. Upon approaching Antu as an indwelt adult Qucusaur, Antu recognized the Traveler, though it believed that they were actually a Qucusaur that could transform into a human.[6]
- While assisting Mualani with Wavey Bay's attractions, the Traveler indwelt an adult Iktomisaur.[7]
- The force ejection when using indwelled outside Saurian to enter the tribe is canonically explained, as there are runes that prevent outside Saurians.[8] It's unknown how or why these runes exist. Little One is the only one that bypass the runes and enter "Collective of Plenty", due to either the unstable state of the volcano or the Tepetlisaurus's special Flamelord Blessing.
Tutorials
- Saurian Indwelling
Through the guidance of a mysterious power, you can now indwell your spirit onto Natlan's Saurians!
Different Saurians have different skills and special traits. Use their powers to get around Natlan and explore it.
When you are in an indwelt state, you will prioritize using up the Saurian's phlogiston before using up your own reserves.
- Tepetlisauri
After a Tepetlisaurus drills into the ground, it can consume Phlogiston to move in all directions, even digging up cliffs.
Jumping while in this underground drilling state will trigger a short high-speed leap forward.
- Yumkasauri
Yumkasaurus can spit out Flamegranate Pectin hidden in its cheek pouches and wrap it around heavy objects and sigils before pulling itself toward them to move.
They can even Hold that button to hover and aim to face the direction they wish to go. However, continuous use of such movement in a short period of time requires Phlogiston consumption...
- Koholasauri
Koholasaurus is capable of high-speed swimming. Not only can it leap high above the water's surface to avoid obstacles, but it can also use Aquadash to charge forward swiftly.
Koholasaurs are also the only Saurians capable of moving through liquid Phlogiston after consuming Phlogiston.
- Qucusaurs
When a certain distance away from the ground or by a cliff, Qucusaurs can use the Jump button to flap their wings to take to the air and glide. When altitude is insufficient, they can consume Phlogiston to take flight. When gliding in the air, they can consume Phlogiston to climb higher, accelerate their glide, or Tap to perform a rolling dash. At this time, they can also Hold to launch a Plunging Attack, which can be canceled mid-duration by releasing, returning to the gliding state. Additionally, it is said that turbulent Phlogiston can cause Phlogiston Currents to appear in front of Qucusaurs at intervals while within certain special zones...
- How to Jump Good...
Iktomisaurs have light and graceful bodies, allowing them to leap up to high places. In addition, they can enter the Spiritspeaker state by Holding to Aim, absorbing Phlogiston from objects within their field of view and further empowering their next jump!
- Tatankasaurus
When a Tatankasaurus is sprinting, it can consume Phlogiston to perform a Quick Charge.
When a charging Tatankasaurus hits an obstacle and is obstructed, or you tap the skill button, it will enter the Spirited state. In this state, the Tatankasaurus can make flying leaps using terrain and even briefly dash across water or liquid Phlogiston. Of course, this will also cause Phlogiston to be consumed more rapidly...
