Kuuvahki
Last updated 2026-09-03
Kuuvahki is an Exploration mechanic found in Nod-Krai. It can be used to move objects, set machines in motion, fortify the creatures of the land, and even influence the weather and nature. It can also be used in combat by Moon Wheel wielders and Radiant Beasts.
Fundamentally, kuuvahki is a primordial form of elemental energy and the power of the Three Moons. It can only be found in Nod-Krai because Columbina, the new Moon Goddess who travels backwards in time during the events of Song of the Welkin Moon, transformed her body into moonlight and poured her power out over Nod-Krai as part of her plan to be reborn in the future.[1]
Overview
There are two main types of kuuvahki: Red and blue. They have opposite polarities, which causes them to repel objects of the same color and attract objects of the opposite color. The player can infuse themselves with either type of kuuvahki to enter an "empowered state," allowing them to use their polarity to pick up, throw, and smash certain objects. Special buttons will appear when this is possible.
Some entities and objects are only associated with one polarity ("unipolar"), while others are associated with both ("bipolar"). Bipolar objects have a mixed red-and-blue appearance, and can be attracted or repelled while infused with either polarity.
The player can only use kuuvahki to carry one object at a time. Picking up another or exiting the empowered state will cause the object to drop to the ground. Some kuuvahki-influenced objects will automatically be picked up when the player is within a short range.
When the player accumulates enough kuuvahki energy, they can temporarily transform into a kuuhenki to increase their mobility. Currently, this is only possible when standing near plants affected by kuuvahki.
While in another player's world during Co-Op Mode, you cannot enter a kuuvahki-empowered state and cannot use kuuvahki currents. However, you can still use Moonlanes.

Lore
As a manifestation of the Three Moons' power, kuuvahki is the power of the Light Realm — the most pure and primordial form of elemental energy — and is described as the state of light before dispersion takes place.[2] Like other forms of Light Realm power, such as phlogiston,[3] sufficiently powerful kuuvahki can counter or even transform Abyssal power;[4] however, if a source of Abyssal energy is stronger than the kuuvahki's, the kuuvahki will be consumed and transformed instead.[5]
Kuuvahki is introduced as a mysterious power which is popularly understood to be localized in Nod-Krai either due to its history as the place where Nibelung raised the Three Moons,[1] or because two of the Three Moons shattered over Nod-Krai and their scattered remnants became kuuvahki.[6] Over time, the land and its ecosystem have adapted to this power; many local creatures grow stronger or weaker with fluctuations of kuuvahki in the environment, and some plants can store it.[1][6]
The term "kuuvahki" comes from the Snezhnograd researchers who studied the power; prior to them, the Frostmoon Scions referred to it as the "blessing of the Moon Goddess."[7] Kuuvahki has been observed to be at its strongest when the Frost Moon, the only intact moon after the War of Funerary Flame, is closest to Teyvat. Recent efforts to explore practical uses of kuuvahki, particularly by the Fatui, has significantly increased tensions between them and the Frostmoon Scions.[6]
As with other types of elemental energy, people have different levels of kuuvahki sensitivity. Symptoms of kuuvahki overexposure include frequent nosebleeds,[8] dizziness,[9] headaches, nausea,[10] or allergic reactions like full-body itching.[11] Those who experience chronic and particularly debilitating symptoms are diagnosed with congenital kuuvahki sensitivity,[11] a condition which will worsen over time if left untreated.[12] Snezhnayan doctors developed a particular medicine to treat it several generations ago, but some Frostmoon Scions refuse to use their services due to the recent hostilities with the Fatui.[6] Aside from treatment, the silver blood of those with especially strong Hyperborean lineage among the Frostmoon Scions, like Lauma, can counteract the symptoms,[12] while powdered Lakkaberries can temporarily ease the symptoms.[6]
Kuuvahki sensitivity can also be reduced by other means. Czcibor, a person with kuuvahki hypersensitivity, mysteriously disappeared for a time in Barrowmoss Barrens and re-emerged with manageable levels of kuuvahki sensitivity, although how this happened is unknown to all.[8] The Frostmoon acolyte priestess Verna developed a suit to ward off excess kuuvahki, although it neutralizes her own use of kuuvahki when attempting to perform blessings.[13]
Origins
The origins of kuuvahki are revealed in the Archon Quest The First Sliver of Moonlight in Song of the Welkin Moon: Act VIII - True Moon. Leading up to that, Columbina — the new Frost Moon Goddess born around 500 years ago — was ambushed and captured by Dottore, who sought to usurp the Three Moons' authorities. To escape his grasp and prevent him from claiming her power, Columbina entered the "moon's reflection."[14] While attempting to find her way out, she realizes that she is traveling backwards in time and, having discovered passageways which briefly connect her to the real world, uses kuuvahki to leave behind clues for her allies to discover.
Eventually, Columbina reaches the end of the "moon's reflection" and finds the three Moon Sisters — Aria, Canon, and Sonnet — at the moment they were imprisoned there during the War of Funerary Flame, having angered Nibelung with their disloyalty and indecisiveness. When their conversation turns to the subject of kuuvahki, the three sisters assert that no such power existed in Nod-Krai during their time. After seeing a demonstration, the sisters reveal that kuuvahki is simply Columbina's own power, despite predating her birth.[1]
Using this newfound information, Columbina comes up with a plan to escape the "moon's reflection" and return to her original time. However, returning would not be enough: she also needed to return with trilunar authority equal to Dottore's, so the Moon Sisters transfer their authorities to Columbina and turn her into the Trilune Goddess. Because the "moon's reflection" could imprison divinity and authority but not the physical body, Columbina "dies" by transforming her body into moonlight and pouring it over the land of Nod-Krai, establishing the origins of kuuvahki during the War of Funerary Flame. Because the Heavenly Principles destroys the Eternal and Iridescent Moons and banishes the Frost Moon around this time,[1] this results in the theory that kuuvahki originated from the moons' destructions.[6]
To ensure these events would occur, Columbina creates a time loop by willing herself to be born 500 years before the present day, without the trilunar authority or any knowledge of what would transpire aside from the song that would serve as a hint for her newborn self.[1][12] Her fully empowered self is resurrected during the climactic fight against Dottore in the Archon Quest Descending Moon in Song of the Welkin Moon: Act VIII - True Moon.

Trivia
- Plants affected by kuuvahki will change appearance when approached — most will start glowing, and some will gently spin or lean towards the player.
- Kuuvahki can also be used to interact with the kuuvahki-influenced body parts of certain wildlife, such as Longplume Ibises, Blunthorn Rhinos, and Rock Crabs. This will startle them, but will not kill them.
- Lauma and Columbina have special interactions with wildlife affected by kuuvahki, which can aid them in exploration.
