The Shadow Realm is an exploration mechanic in Snezhnaya. It is first unlocked through the Archon Quest Gunfire in the Silent Lands in Chapter VII: Act I - Everwinter Without Mercy.

Combat

Inside the Shadow Realm, Pale Crown Palace and Flamefeather Valley, players will enter a unique third-person shooter perspective with the Traveler. Elemental Sight, food and jumping is not available in the Shadow Realm.

The Traveler has base stats of 3,000 HP, 1000 ATK, 600 DEF and 200 Stamina. Players can change their loadout through the Eye of Graeae (Gadget) and utilising its Fab-Vision.

All enemies in the Shadow Realm (and equivalents) will usually have a purple aura around them, barring special enemies as part of quest lines. Their levels are static across all World Levels.

Players are initially given a base version of Shatanaya's Frostsilver, while the other two weapons, Ashamez's Thunder and Balsag's Sunwheel, are unlocked by exploring more of Snezhnaya. The Frostsilver and Thunder are considered assault rifles, while the Sunwheel is a grenade launcher. Up to two primary weapons may be carried by the player at any given time, along with a frag crystal of their choice, and these can be adjusted with through the open firearms menu. When ammo is depleted, players who attempt to fire will automatically reload a new clip in; a reload can be forced by clicking the reload button.

Ammo is obtained by searching for ammo boxes across the area, and will provide an assortment of ammo for all players. A blue-tipped arrow gives 75 assault rifle ammo, a yellow, circular-like object gives 6 grenade ammo and a red spike gives 1 frag crystal. Once opened, there is a short waiting time the box can be opened again for further ammo. Players may also make use of Prime Ice constructs in the Shadow Realm.

Players can take cover behind barricades or short walls, and human enemies are also able to do the same. Double tapping run will cause the player to slide a short distance, and stamina is consumed this way unless sliding down a slope which will not consume stamina. Players can aim their weapon for increased accuracy or fire from the hip. Although only present in a few places, Fall DMG is greatly reduced.

Mini Shadow Realms

Mini Shadow Realms are found in the Snezhnaya Adventure Journal but can also be identified on the minimap if they have not been cleared for the first time with a dark purple mist on the map. There is also an official from the Energy Commission standing outside the zone. To enter these realms, find the rift and enter it from there.

Unlike the boxes in Pale Crown Palace and Flamefeather Valley, ammo boxes in mini shadow realms are a one-time use and will despawn once interacted with. Health powerups still respawn as usual, and Prime Ice constructs can be built.

The player will then be taken to an instance where they must eliminate all enemies. They solely consist of Fatui enemies.

  • Oprichniki Snipers are usually found in harder to reach areas and will attempt to snipe the player with their rifles. They will track the player, and the player will be aware of their presence from the laser that their rifles give off. The laser color will indicate if the sniper is Physical or Cryo.
  • Oprichniki Vanguards will attempt to melee the player, dealing Electro DMG.
  • Oprichniki Medics can heal their allies.
    • Elite Oprichniki Medics are functionally identical to normal medics, but they can also apply Hydro Wards on successful heals.
    • Oprichniki Engineers, instead of providing healing or wards, can summon Shimmerlight: Self-Destructing Roaming Devices into battle. They can spawn up to five maximum.
  • Oprichniki Line Troopers make use of cover and fire at the player with assault rifles. If left unattended, they may try to throw bombs to deal AoE Pyro DMG. Bomb tosses are indicated with a fury-like bar. The action can be interrupted by firing at them, causing them to drop the bomb onto themselves.
  • Fatui Skirmisher - Hydrogunners are more aggressive and disciplined than Line Troopers, dealing Hydro DMG onto the player.
  • Fatui Skirmisher - Pyroslingers are able to deal Pyro DMG directly along with the ability to throw Bombs to deal AoE Pyro DMG.
  • Landcruisers are the same as their overworld variants.
  • Self-Destructing Roaming Devices of Electro and Hydro varieties may appear in some mini realms. They will attempt to rush the player and explode upon reaching them, dealing their corresponding elemental type as DMG. The player can destroy them before they get close to use against enemies.
  • Fatui Skirmisher - Hydrogunner Legionnaires will heal any injured allies and can enter an enhanced state, applying a Hydro Ward onto themselves.
  • Fatui Skirmisher - Cryogunner Legionnaires can enter an enhanced state, applying a Frozen Ward onto themselves.

Each Mini Shadow Realm contains a boss, which is found at the end of the instance, apart from Facility.

Some enemies may spawn with a unique barrier that blocks all incoming attacks. In order to remove this shield, players must grab a specialized frag crystal (these are indicated on the screen) and throw it at them. These frag crystals will respawn as much as needed if the player misses a throw with them. If the player somehow runs out of bounds in a mini realm, the instance will cancel and players will be put back at the entrance.

Quest Instances

Players exploring both Flamefeather Valley and the White Birch Snowgrave will automatically be put into a variant of the Shadow Realm. Areas of interest, chests and oculi can be found while gameplay is still the same as if the player was in the Shadow Realm. Since Elemental Sight can't be used to find chests and items of interest, players should have the Cryo Treasure Compass equipped to pinpoint them.

Shooting Range

Players can access the Shooting Range through their personal train, entering the rift into the Shadow Realm. They may hone their aiming skills here, and a portal to the left of the spawn point leads to the Edge of Survival minigame.

Edge of Survival

The Edge of Survival is a unique end-game mode in which players can challenge one of three particularly strong Shadow Realms for rewards. Players are given a set time to clear the stage, with points being given upon killing enemies. The total score awarded depends on how many enemies were killed, how fast the level was cleared and any difficulty modifiers that were in effect. There are four difficulties; Normal for levels 1-2, Advancing for 3-5, Hard for 6-8, and Extreme at level 9.

Each stage is unlocked by entering the Shadow Realm at the corresponding locations in Snezhnaya. Completing one will unlock the World Quest The Shooting Range and the Deep Shadow Realm.

Rewards

Alongside general rewards, players can encounter Shadow Wingdrops in the Shadow Realm. They can be taken down in one hit from any weapon and will award the player with a sample held in a vial. These can be deposited at the Shadow Realm Analyzer device inside the train for analysis for various rewards including increasing stamina in the Shadow Realm. Shadow Wingdrops are indicated on the minimap with a bat-like icon.

Shadow Realm Analyzer

The first five levels will add 40 Shadow Realm Combat Stamina. Currently, up to level 5 can be obtained, with subsequent levels being unlocked in future updates. Raising Shadow Realm Analyzer level requires Shadow Wingdrop Shadow Wingdrop offered in various quantities. A total of ?? Shadow Wingdrops are required to reach the maximum level.

As of Version 7.0, a total of 58 Shadow Wingdrops can be obtained, enough to get to level 5 with 6 remaining.

Lore

The origin and purpose of the Shadow Realm remains a mystery, but its nature is otherworldly and distinct from both the Void Realm as well as the native forces of Teyvat. The Belyi Tsar surmises that the Shadow Realm was created by Anacharsis - either directly or as an indirect consequence of his leftover resentment towards Celestia - and operates as a buffer zone between Teyvat and the Abyss with the capability to reduce the latter's encroachment to a mere seepage. For this reason, the ruins of Hyperborea remained uncorrupted by the Abyss despite remaining in the Shadow Realm for millennia.[1]

As the Shadow Realm straddles the intersection of both the physical and spiritual planes, matter does not exist in a truly stable form inside it. It is described as being completely devoid of light and elemental energy, existing outside the purview of space and time, only occasionally intersecting with the Light Realm before receding back into the dark, and as teeming with "possibilities yet unobserved." Vision-bearers cannot channel their powers within the Shadow Realm, which prompted the invention of Firearms to afford those within the realm a means of attack.[2]

Trivia

  • Both the Light Realm and Shadow Realm are described by the Belyi Tsar as containing boundless or countless possibilities. This similarity may in some way be related to what he describes as "that very first shadow which the purest of light had cast into the void," which was a key protection against the Abyss. Its loss as a result of the Heavenly Principles creating the Human Realm is treated as part of the reason for the Abyss anchoring Teyvat from the end of time.[1] This is notable, as Barbeloth describes the Abyss as "the hatred carried by all the fates that will not come to pass,"[3] implying that the repellent relationship the Shadow Realm has with the Abyss is because of its loving acceptance of these fates, as described by Aksinya.[4]
