Eridu

Eridu, also known as the Old Capital, was a major city. Eleven years prior to the events of Zenless Zone Zero, it was destroyed by the rapid expansion of Hollow Zero, and New Eridu was built from its eastern ruins.^[1]

History

Eridu was founded several generations ago. During this time, seven notable individuals were awarded the title of "Void Hunter" by Eridu's mayor for their feats in exploring and suppressing the Hollows. Bangboo were invented by "Sunbringer", the then-CEO of the Marcel Group, and presumably began to be implemented in city life. The Helios Academy was founded by Arche for Hollow research.^[2]

Fall of the Old Capital

Eleven years prior to the start of the game, Hollow Zero spontaneously and quickly began to expand, engulfing vast areas of the Pluto Quarter and Minerva Quarter. The city authorities allocated massive resources into disaster relief and attempted to contain the Hollow, but their efforts were largely futile. The Defense Force and Yunkui Summit suffered particularly devastating casualties.^[3] Eridu's leadership decided to detonate fourteen Shiyu Pillars along the city's southwest to northeast axis, which created a massive chasm that cut through the city and reduced the amount of matter available for Hollow Zero to corrupt, successfully halting its expansion.^[1]

Trivia

Etymology

• Eridu may be named after the Sumerian city of Eridu, the earliest known city in southern Mesopotamia.
• The name may also be a shortened form of Eridanus, the river in Greek mythology where Phaethon fell to his death. This would support the choice of adding Ovid's epitaph to Phaethon over the model of the city in the lore video discussing the founding of Eridu.^[2] Moreover, the majority of the city quarters are named after Roman deities: Janus, Pluto, Minerva, Faunus, and Vulcan.
