Bangboo are autonomous smart machines found throughout New Eridu.

Description

Biology

Bangboo are small, rabbit-like robots created by the Marcel Group. Originally created to help civilians escape Hollow disasters, they have diversified in their use over time, being used by all of the various factions across New Eridu, from City Administration to the various companies that comprise TOPS, to everyday citizens who keep them as companions. The Marcel Group continues to produce Bangboo to this very day, with various BooBox shops existing to sell them to the populace.

Due to being originally built to operate within Hollows, Bangboo have high Ether aptitude, and while most Bangboo accessible to general citizens are not capable of combat, others that are part of organizations dedicated to combat such as the New Eridu Defense Force and H.A.N.D. are incredibly proficient, being able to fight humans and Ethereals with little issue. Providing they are well maintained, a Bangboo can live for decades, with a few rare individuals such as Shellboo, Prophetboo and Kahkiboo having lived for over 100 years.

As machines, Bangboo require electricity to function, with most buildings having charging stations for Bangboo, as well as publicly accessible charging stations for Bangboo to enter at their leisure. Charging stations are spaces for Bangboo to rest as well as chat with each other.[1] Similarly to Intelligent Constructs, Bangboo can share their charge with others, though this can lead to them shutting down if enough of their energy is siphoned. Bangboo consume electricity in a manner like food, and different kinds of electricity have different flavors to them.[2] This is to the extent that Ether Batteries can be programmed with flavours in them, and products like liquid electric bread are sold for Bangboo to consume in Roscaelifer.

Bangboo primarily communicate in a series of grunts (textualized as "Ehn-ne"s), with the majority coming with built-in translators that automatically make their language understandable to people.[3] The larger Bangboo first seen in Roscaelifer are notable for their grunts being slightly altered, textualized as "Wuh-ne" rather than "Ehn-ne". Some Bangboo can speak the universal language, though very few Bangboo have showcased this ability thus far.[4] It is possible for humans to speak the Bangboo language as well, though there are no known fluent speakers.[5]

Like other smart machines, they are built with a Logic Core, granting them intelligence and problem solving capabilities. Despite this, no Bangboo are known to have passed the Forbidden Fruit Test to prove their capacity for self-determination, and as such are not recognized as citizens in New Eridu due to a lack of true personhood. Instead they are the property of whoever is their legal owner, with Bangboo universally regarding their owners as their "parents."[6] Bangboo without owners are supposed to be scrapped according to city regulations, but despite this, wild Bangboo are not uncommon across the city, many of them getting by doing part-time work for various businesses.[7] Abandoned Bangboo shells may be recycled into other technology, such as the W-Engine Weeping Gemini.[8]

History

Bangboo were originally created by the Void Hunter "Sunbringer", who was the former CEO of Marcel Group. According to Remielle, all of the first generation Void Hunters were part of the discussion about what form they should take, wand many of the original concepts were "even more stoic than Sunbringer herself". Remielle pitched numerous designs, most of which were rejected, but atleast one had something akin to bunny ears, a concept that was maintained as the Bangboo prototypes continued their development.[9] Due to this resemblance, "Joyous" later named the Hollow navigation data stored in Bangboo "Carrots."[10]

Bangboo have been part of life for humanity since the founding of Eridu, with a rare few Bangboo like Shellboo being over 100 years old. Following the Fall of the Old Capital their function has remained unchanged, and they continue to be found across New Eridu, fulfilling the same tasks as they did prior. Specific models are used by various agencies found across the city, such as the Securityboo of Public Security, the Battleboo of the NEDF, and the Agentboo of H.A.N.D..

Roscaelifer

In Roscaelifer, Bangboo enjoy equal rights with humans, Thirens and Constructs, allowing them to hold jobs, run businesses, and operate independently. They make up over 60% of the active population of the city, and given the difference in their rights, their role in society, and the general culture of the city, Bangboo here are often seen idly wandering the streets unattended, and they regularly wear clothing, to the point that the idea of naked Bangboo walking around, as is the case in New Eridu, is viewed as vulgar. It is entirely normal for Bangboo in Roscaelifer to be part of families with humans, with Bangboo being parents to human children in some cases.[11] Within the Booastrum District, Gear Street is the primary residential area for Bangboo citizens, with houses and amenities built specifically for their needs.[12]

Even here however they are complications for them, as once a Bangboo has reached a certain number of "service years", they are retired from work and sent to New Eridu, and due to the island's classified nature, this requires wiping their memories, a process tantamount to death for them. The Bangboo working for the Central Computing Department wear out their logic cores much faster than other Bangboo due to handling the Rosetta Data, and thus have less service years than others. This in turn leads to the External Strategy Department, which handles Bangboo retirement, to be resented by Bangboo from across Roscaelifer, though Norma has been working painstakingly to create new logic cores that would allow Bangboo to retain their more precious memories even after a memory wipe.

There are various models of Bangboo that are seemingly unique to Roscaelifer. These include Combatboo, Databoo, Energyboo, Patrolboo, Researchboo and Weatherboo.

New Eridu Types

Agentboo

A model utilized by H.A.N.D., Agentboo are highly proficient in combat, with a preference for firearms.

There are 3 Combatboo Bangboo:

Databoo

A model primarily employed by the CCD to process the Rosetta Data. Humans very rarely engage in this type of process, as Databoo can be hooked directly up to terminals and process the data in their own bodies.

Some Databoo, while processing the Rosetta Data, recieve a "revelation" about the true Sunbringer. This has led many of them to join the En-Nah Gang, and consider the three versions Sunbringer who currently rule Roscaelifer to be imposters.

There are 7 Databoo Bangboo:

Patrolboo

A model primarily employed by the Airspace Patrol and the CCD. These Bangboo are mostly seen patrolling the city itself, acting as guards and handling disputes. Those employed by the CCD are primarily tasked with handling Bangboo related affairs, and serve as the primary law enforcement for Gear Street, rather than Airspace Patrol[16]

There are 6 Patrolboo Bangboo:

Ultraboo

A model utilized by the ESD. Having been specifically designed by Norma, Ultraboo have notably powerful parts, granting them a much longer service life than other Bangboo.[17]

Ultra Jake

Weatherboo

A model are employed to moniter weather data and create weather forecasts, a necessary task given the city's elevation and existence within the Minerva storm belt. They primarily ride in the air using specialized devices attached to their backs, and wear raincoats.

There are 1 Weatherboo Bangboo:
