Drowned Ideal

Last updated 2026-08-05

Drowned Ideals are phenomena that manifest in areas with high Miasma concentration, particularly in the "town" within Timesworn Hills.

Description

"Drowned Ideal" is a term coined by Moss, characterized by entities that maintain the same appearance as the corrupted ones but possess different identities - they are "how people dream themselves to be."
When observed through the Perception Technique, it becomes evident that Drowned Ideals aren't human, but rather share the same ethereal manifestation as other Miasma-derived beings.
In essence, they are Miasmic products formed when the empty Miasmic environment of the Lemnian Hollow corrupts people, guiding and transforming their consciousness and memories.
The Miasma traps the person's true form and materializes their dreams from their memories, replacing their original self with this simulation living within the Hollow.

Overview

Drowned Ideals are Miasmic entities that typically possess the appearance, personality, and memories of real people corrupted by the Miasma. When observed with the Perception Technique, they have the same Ether frequency as other Miasmic objects, such as Miasma Tumors. These entities are the people's "dream selves," embodying their past aspirations and dreams that were given up on. For people who have no dreams of their future selves, their Drowned Ideals may take the shape of other people, or even non-entities such as objects and buildings.

Drowned Ideals act independently from their creators and cannot be controlled. They are able to interact with the physical world. They cannot be injured or killed like living entities, and if destroyed through brute force, they will re-form after time. Drowned Ideals only disappear completely when their creators are killed, or purified from Miasma with devices such as Lumin-Boxes.

History

The first known Drowned Ideal was created eight years ago when Ah-Deh, a member of the Defense Force's special unit, suffered corruption in an empty town in Timesworn Hills. As he was being corrupted into an Ethereal, his desire to spend more time with his daughter created the Drowned Ideal Little Lucia, also known as "Lantern Bearer." Ah-Deh became the Ethereal known as the Wandering Hunter soon after and formed a unique bond with Little Lucia, the latter regarding their interactions together as a game of hide-and-seek.[1]

Two weeks prior to the events of Season 2 Chapter 4, Yidhari Murphy was brought to the town by Sarah, and Yidhari used her ability to recreate past illusions of the town; while doing so, she was sedated by Sarah and the Miasma's influence made her subconsciously attach her desire to "watch others' stories" to the town. Thus, the town itself became Yidhari's Drowned Ideal. Two days later, a group of trapped miners arrived to the town and became Drowned Ideals, while their physical bodies were enveloped in Miasmic cocoons. The next day, an Exaltist named Viggo Moss came to the town to meet with Sarah and help her sedate Yidhari. Moss eventually formed his own Drowned Ideal, regarding it to be his real self and calling his physical body a "shell." As more people arrived, Moss took note of their Drowned Ideals and conducted experiments. He cut into one of the cocoons, and while the person inside quickly became an Ethereal, their Drowned Ideal still existed. However, when Moss killed the Ethereal to prevent it from attacking the other cocoons, that Drowned Ideal vanished forever. Moss kept this a secret from the other Drowned Ideals and only told them that they must protect the cocoons.[1]

When Komano Manato, Phaethon, Banyue, and the real Lucia began investigating the town, Manato's Drowned Ideal appeared. Though the Drowned Ideal considered Manato weak due to his reliance on others, after Manato bested him in a fight, the Drowned Ideal seemingly had a change of heart and later helped Manato operate the "Master Lumin" device. After they activated the purification device and the townsfolk were freed from their cocoons, all the Drowned Ideals vanished. Little Lucia also disappeared after the group defeated the Wandering Hunter.[2]
