Vila

Last updated 2026-09-09

Vila (Russian: Вила) are one of the six common types of Snowland Fae.[1]

Overview

Like other Snowland Fae, the Vila were created by the Hyperboreans as part of their effort to create a race that could surpass humans.[2] They are traditionally ruled by a Grand Duke or Grand Duchess of the Vila[3] and are known for their ability to fly with insect-like wings.[4]

Story

For an unknown period after Hyperborea fell and they settled in Snezhnaya, the Vila were vassals of the Volkodlak under King Miscislav, to whom they paid tithes of grain, gold, and slaves.[5]

When the Belyi Tsar began his campaign to unify the Snowland Fae, the Vila were among the first to follow him. After their first Grand Duchess, Vaselisa Strivozha, was single-handedly defeated by the Tsar,[6] he asked them to cease their tributes to the Volkodlak. At his request, they denounced Miscislav and submitted willingly to the Pale Star Court.[5][7]

During his reign, the Belyi Tsar established the Druzhna and personally led them as his personal guard.[8] Its ranks were drawn largely from the Vila, as they still are today.[9] He also granted the Vila amnesty and allowed them to live alongside humans, a favor many remain thankful for and credit for their wealth.[10]

After the Belyi Tsar was killed during the Cataclysm and the Tsaritsa ascended as the new Cryo Archon, some Vila launched small-scale rebellions out of dissatisfaction with her policies toward the fae nobility. During these, Vila raiders known as the "Burner of Cities" used the railway to roam the frozen plains "like a shadow."[11] The rebellions were soon suppressed, but the fact that their leaders were descendants of the old Vila nobility caused a major split within the Vila people.[12] The Tsaritsa eventually took control of the Druzhna and established it as her own personal guard, which it remains to this day.[13]

Some Vila still live in the tundra, opposed to the Tsaritsa and fixated on the privileges they held under the Belyi Tsar. The Vila of the Druzhna regard them as traitors and a permanent shame upon their kind.[10] The Traveler encounters such rogue Vila as enemies while traveling through Snezhnaya.

Appearance

Vila are humanoid in appearance, with a smaller stature, pale white skin, pointy ears, and two pairs of insect-like wings. Thus, they have the ability to take brief flight which gives them exceptional mobility.[9]
