Soldier 11

"Knowing there's no shore at the end of this sea of suffering is precisely why rowing across it becomes the proof of our existence."
A synthesized voice of someone once marked as deceased

"What a beautiful harmonica melody... Wait, there's no one here? C-Could it be a ghost?!"
A Defense Force soldier completely unaware of the person hiding in the nearby haystack

"Twenty red bean buns sold out in an instant just 8 seconds ago, and the streets no longer carry their sweet aroma. It seems... I've encountered a worthy rival."
Tsukishiro Yanagi

Official Introduction

"I will find the true culprit behind the fall of the old capital and make them pay for what they've done."
"If the ferrier guiding me to the truth demands a price... I am willing to stake my very life."
"By letting the will to protect steer my hatred, I gain the crosshairs fixed on the truth."

Profile

A nigh-blind sniper and frontline survivor of the old capital's fall, Trigger is a member of Obol Squad, where she uses her array of close-range, sharpshooting and stealth skills obtained from her time at Lyre Squad along with an ability gained from her corrupted eyesight dubbed 'Ether Vision' and heightened senses in hopes of finding the true culprits behind Eridu's fall.

Outside of being a soldier specializing in killing targets from afar, Trigger has a caring side. Her desire to protect those near to her has a notable effect on her psyche, and she also gets along well with children.[1] Also, she likes red bean buns.[2]

Trigger wears a mask with two lights at the bottom two corners that light up depending on her emotions.

History

The once shy Phlegethon was a soldier brought into Eridu Defense Force's Chrysoberyl Division - Lyre Squad by its captain Charon to be their sniper. Her codename was considered cumbersome by Charon, who decided to redub her with a new codename: Trigger. Over the span of a two and a half years, Trigger became more talkative and skilled as a sniper, capable of adjusting to changes in wind speeds on the fly and protecting her teammates from harm. She also made tight bonds with each member of Lyre Squad to the point her captain noticed how she seemed on the verge of breaking any time a member got hurt. Whilst recording a message with the rest of Lyre Squad to celebrate Trigger's 1000th day, she told the sniper not to bear everything alone and to trust them with her vulnerable side and gifted her a song she composed on a harmonica "Homecoming". Trigger would never hear this message until after the old capital's fall.[3]

When Hollow Zero first began expansion, Defense Force HQ believed it was a normal Hollow disaster that could easily be stopped with the standard amount of troops, this included Lyre Squad, who were sent with the promise of reinforcements coming to support them, but soon what they expected to be a regular amount of Ethereals became an onslaught and their backup never came. Trigger watched her fellow soldiers die or be corrupted until she was hit with a powerful etheric beam to her eyes, which corrupted them to the point that 90% of her eyesight was gone. Trigger soon lost consciousness due to that and other wounds, and the last thing she ever saw was her squadmates, heavily corrupted and injured yet still protecting her.[3] Whilst they continued to fight, Lyre Squad soon saw another solider, Grim Vulture of Nemesis Squad, who was retreating. With them being beyond saving, they tasked the fleeing sniper with saving Trigger, which she did.[3]

When Trigger regained consciousness, the old capital had been destroyed and Hollow Zero was contained. Now blind, Trigger was interrogated by an unknown group. According to her Lyre Squad was still alive and with her, which contradicted with other statements and caused the sniper to mentally break, when the interrogation concluded, Trigger promised to find her friends.[4]

Trigger soon left the Defense Force, now suffering heavy PTSD from the Hollow Zero incident. Over time she learnt that her disability had granted her a unique ability to detect etheric fluctuations of humans, Ethereals and objects within a Hollow, an ability she named "Ether Vision". During this time Trigger spent most of her time around Port Elpis. It was at this same location where she heard the familiar melody of "Homecoming" once again.[3] This song led to her befriending then rookie proxies Phaethon and soon led to them learning what happened to her squad and ending the life of her savior-turned-serial killer. Afterwards, Trigger made her new goal in life to be finding the real culprits behind the old capital's fall, and took an offer given to her by Nathan, former captain of Obsidian Division - Impera Squad to join a squad that was being formed which aligned with her new goal: Obol Squad.[3]

Now the sniper for Obol Squad, Trigger would still stay in contact with Phaethon and find herself working with them later down the line.[5]

Agent Weapon

Phlegethon
The military-grade electric sniper rifle Phlegethon is a custom weapon made for Trigger by members of Lyre Squad when she first joined the Defense Force. Its special construction allows it to handle multiple combat scenarios with utmost ease, including, but not limited to, long-range sniping, rapid firing, and close-quarters combat.

Initially, to maintain a stylistic consistency with the other members, the young lady's codename was supposed to be Phlegethon. However, since it was too cumbersome to read, Captain Charon ultimately gave her a different codename: Trigger. The name Phlegethon was instead given to her beloved rifle, serving as proof of the bond between her and her teammates.

  • Well-mannered, gentle, perceptive, and dependable — these are the qualities that best sum up the first impression Trigger leaves on people.
  • Our bond with Trigger started early on, and she appears to view this past experience as her most cherished memory.
  • She's a bit too invested in our plans, orchestrating random encounters in every way possible... Seems this is the true face of this ace sniper.

Agent Details

Trigger is a sniper of New Eridu Defense Force, Obsidian Division's Obol Squad. Trigger is the code name she was assigned when enlisting in Eridu, and she's used it ever since.
She has extremely unique eyes. While she cannot see most things, in Hollow environments, she can distinctly identify the position and changes of any entities that emit Ether fluctuations. Note: Such entities include living beings, native Ether substances, Ether products, and Ethereals.
As a visually challenged person in the broadest sense, Trigger has honed her other senses to the utmost, allowing her to move and act as if she could see. She can even detect subtle changes in her environment with precision. This makes her highly adept in the tactical position of a sniper, capable of handling a variety of covert tasks such as stealth, surveillance, and assassination.
In contrast to her precise and deadly combat abilities, her personality makes her seem rather unassuming. Aside from occasionally appearing silently in the video store and giving the Second Assistant a sudden scare, she can generally be considered harmless.

According to records, Trigger originally served in the Lyre Squad of the Eridu Defense Force, Chrysoberyl Division. The other members of the squad were all killed during the fall of the old capital. Her eyes were also corrupted during this disaster. Trigger is currently working alongside the other members of her new squad to investigate the truth behind the fall of the old capital.
Trigger has a deep sense of loyalty to her companions, willing to go to great lengths for them. Master, from her actions, it is evident that she considers you a companion and has a noticeably high level of affection for you. It is likely that some event has occurred, which has left a strong, positive impression on her.
Suggestion: Offering unlimited red bean buns and round-the-clock access to soundproof rooms for harmonica playing as conditions, try negotiating a long-term partnership. This would enable you to secure extremely dependable combat strength with minimal expenditure.

Cooperation Notes

Agent Belle Circle Icon Belle
The last time I was alone at home and running a fever, Trigger unexpectedly showed up at the store. Without even checking my temperature, she knew I had a fever of 38.6 and took care of me the whole afternoon... How did she know?
Agent Wise Circle Icon Wise
Are you asking how she knew you had a fever, or how she knew the exact temperature? I'm not sure either, but a little while ago when I sprained my ankle in the parking lot, she showed up with an ice pack almost immediately...

Trivia

  • Trigger's kit and characterization have many references to the Greek underworld:
    • Trigger's original codename, and then her weapon's name, Phlegethon, is one of the five rivers of the Greek Underworld. It is said to be made of blazing fire.
      • Similarly, the other Lyre Squad codenames are the remaining four rivers, with the captain being named after the psychopomp Charon, whose codename Trigger uses to maintain anonimity the first time she worked with Phaethon, during Out of Sight.
    • Her Exclusive Channel Sights of Asphodel and her namecard The Bloom of Asphodels are a reference to the Asphodel Meadows, a section of the the Greek underworld covered in asphodels where most of the souls went;
    • Her sixth Mindscape Cinema, "Beyond the River of the Dead", references how the Greek Underworld was separated by the living world by a river, especially the Acheron, where the ferryman Charon carried souls from the living shore to the dead shore;
    • Her Basic Attack: Harmonizing Shot - Tartarus is a reference to the Tartarus, a deep abyss below the underworld, where the Titans and other enemies of the Olympian gods were imprisoned. In later mythology, it also became a place of damnation for those who sinned against the gods more similar to the concept of hell;
    • Her Chain Attack: Stygian Guide is another reference to Charon: while in Greek mythology the river separating the living from the dead was the Acheron, in Roman mythology it was instead the Styx;
    • Her Ultimate is called Underworld Requiem.
  • Trigger's player name at the Godfinger arcade is "Echolocator" in reference to Echolocation, a form of navigation that uses soundwaves.
  • Trigger shares several things in common with Tsukishiro Yanagi:
    • Both were once members of the Defense Force. Trigger temporarily left after Eridu's fall, whilst Yanagi was transferred to Hollow Special Operations Section 6.
    • Both have a condition that affects their eyesight, In Trigger's case it being Ether corruption, while in Yanagi's case it is the transfusion of Oni blood into her system causing nearsightedness and temporary blindness.
    • Both are Electric attribute.
    • Both have their birthday on the 21st, albeit in different months.
    • Their favorite food is red bean buns, both mentioning them in numerous dialogues and other forms of media.
