Beast Ship

Beast ships, also known as mechabeasts are living biological spaceships created with biotechnology by the borisin that have the ability to feed, attack, and reproduce. The borisin's combat vessels for everyday hunting are also known for their rapid velocity.^[1]

Overview

Biology and Specifications

Beast ships contained an energy storage organ in its chest. When low on energy, it would begin to shrink. If this continued, it would start to abandon its aged and useless body parts and digest a number of its own organs. A beast ship's type may be identifiable by a swollen gland on its forehead. The beast ship's control center is distributed through separate locations. Special attack ships even have up to ten brains.

As long as one brain remains, it will be able to break off and become a new, separate beast ship to continue battle. A beast ship can be entered through the receded nasal cavity in the center of the skull if the head is sufficiently damaged after destroying it's inert armor.^[2] If the brains in the other regions are still alive, the immune system will be constantly active in the form of hands and tentacles, would keep bursting through the writhing walls to grab the intruders until the final brain is taken out.

The energy supply organs in the abdomen are also troublesome for intruders to deal with. Sarcomas in the body caused by the curse of Yaoshi allows biological energy that has been created from thin air to be converted into other forms of energy. However, this self-generated energy was not enough to make the ship self-sustaining. The corpses of devoured servants and various living organisms, accumulated toxic substances, and a huge amount of waste material that had not yet been moved to the excretion area will be amassed there.

Once a dying beast ship's internal circulation is cut, the biomass constantly generated inside the cabin would increase internal pressure endlessly. The breeding cavity is located directly above the excretion area, where residual gene fragments can be extracted as supplementary embryonic information for propagation. The flavor of beast ship meat is unexpectedly average.^[3]

Propulsion, Movement, and Docking

The void oar fins underneath the beast ship may be responsible for direction and movement. Though they may look light and floaty, the jellyfish tentacle-like appendages extending from the tips of the oar fins are actually complex phase structures, and are capable of entangling and strangling enemy ships. The aft of the beast ships contained a propeller and tail that may aid propulsion and directional control. If the energy storage tissue in these tentacles was broken, the reflux of biomass would have spread a foul, bile-like stench across the entire beast ship. ^[3]

Armament

The mechabeasts can use their sharp fangs to tear through enemies, armor, and even the hull of enemy ships, devouring opponents for fuel. It's implied that some of them can fire toxins to attack.^[3]

Growth and usage

Borisins created the beast ships at least two Amber Eras after they gained longevity, based on current archaeological evidence.^[4]

The Chiseltooth Pack is the most advanced in genetic witchcraft, such as mechabeasts, which the pack primarily manufactures with their genetic warlocks. Within a society like borisin that honors strength above all, beast ship operators naturally held a relatively high level of political influence. Some family lineages were renowned for producing beast ship operators.^[5] The Bloodwind Pack is the most prolific in beast-riding among borisin. They have the largest beast ship fleet among present day borisin packs.^[6]

The borisin will sometimes transform conquered worlds into one of their weapons nurseries. Inhabitants of those worlds will become literal pieces of meat with no dignity, nutrients for mountainous mechabeasts.^[7]

In the year 8038 Star Calendar, Yewliho led the Preta fleet, with 127 men remaining, to the Xianzhou Fanghu, determined to submit and pledge allegiance to the Alliance after the death of her son at the hands of Kobo of the Bloodwind Pack. After two long years of careful deliberation, the Alliance decided to pardon these borisin for their crimes and allow them to live inside the Fanghu under strict surveillance. This was on the condition that they comply with all Alliance research on borisin, as well as submitting all beast ship-related technology to them.^[5]

Starskiffs on the Xianzhou Yaoqing are born with biotechnology instead of being grown from seeds. Newly born starskiffs are described as "furry little creatures". They can even be named, and may join the battlefield after growing in a few short months, becoming loyal partners of the Verdant Knights, capable of eradicating abominations. New starskiffs are born almost every day in Verdant Harbor. Their description bears striking resemblance to borisin beast ships.^[8]

Organization and tactical groupings

Beast ships can be organized into various fleets under the borisin. The Shepherds Fleet consisted of 16 beast ships and 325 battleships.^[9] Under the Bloodwind Pack, Kobo led a 3,000-strong beast ship fleet while Yewliho led the Preta fleet that boasted 300 ships.^[5]

Types

Battle Mount

As soon as the adulthood ceremony ends, the borisin youths must walk into the weapon farm, then pick and tame their first battle mount among the "mechabeasts" that have been filtered and bred via gene witchcraft. Mechabeasts that consume the conquered as their feed have astounding agility, perception, and ferocity. On that night, borisin youths must chase and duel against the mechabeasts. Dying to the beasts is considered the result of cowardice.

The borisin youths trip the desired mount to the ground and tie the bridle, which is inlaid with neural spike whips, onto the animal's neck. The beast will be stunned through telepathy with its future master and become as tame as if they already received hundreds of whiplashes. When the beast willingly carries the master on its back, the youth is considered a full-fledged borisin sorya. The borisin mechabeast bridle then becomes the recorder of wars, the history of their battles throughout their lives, and the reins will gradually become full of scratches, knots, and accessories.^[10]

Servant ship

A servant ship is identifiable by the swollen gland on its forehead and it's control center is distributed through separate locations. Yancui once hired a team of two Armed Archaeologists to launch an attack on a lone wounded servant beast ship in order to identify it's taste.^[3]

Special attack ship

Special attack ships have up to ten brains as their control center distributed throughout their body.^[3]

Great Mothership

Pack Chiefs may command a great beast ship.^[5] Normally, wounded beast ships would be fed to the great mothership.^[3]

Notable beast ships

Windguard

Windguard was a monstrously huge mechabeast created by the Denizens of Abundance that pulverized Cloud Knight defense forces as though they were ants. Yanqing went face-to-face with the giant mechabeast, claiming its head and routing the enemy to the point of collapse.^[11]

Gigantes

Gigantes was a mechabeast war pawn that at least ten times larger than young Jingliu. She broke all the swords she brought with her and only managed to leave a few dozen cuts on it's gigantic body. She was whacked away by it's enormous hand and in a split moment before it could kill her, an arrow filled with blazing fire blew off the Gigantes' head.^[2]

Trivia

Etymology

• 兽 shòu means "beast," and 舰 jiàn means "ship." The term beast ship was used to refer to a Chinese warship with animal-shaped carvings on its hull by Chinese poet Wen Tingyun.
• 器 qì means "device," and 兽 shòu means "beast."
