Old Mettle

Old Mettle, also known as "The Blade of Forged Remnants," is the sword Yunli uses. It was forged from a cursed sword billet by Yunli herself when undergoing training under Huaiyan.^[1]

Overview

Old Mettle is a large, rectangular sword reminiscent of a greatsword, yet the hilt is disproportionately small. Despite its size, Yunli is able to handle and throw it with relative ease. In its idle state, the bottom of the blade is colored teal, but it gradually changes color the further up the blade goes until it is a deep red. Yunli can "activate" the sword, making it a iron-hot red color with the top of the sword glowing yellow. The hilt and crossguard are dark gold, with the handle having white bandages wrapped around it. A cubical metal charm is attached on the pommel of the blade.

History

Before belonging to Yunli, the sword frame was in her father Hanguang's workshop. He never came around to forging it as he was busy with the cursed swords. When Yunli fled the Flamewheel Forge and became a disciple under Huaiyan, she forged the sword instead.^[1]

The blade has seen the cursed swords just as Yunli has, and now they hunt them together.^[1] After she has found, destroyed, and melted a cursed sword, she infuses it with Old Mettle, which explains the name "Blade of Forged Remnants."^[2] Despite having won other swords, Yunli has always decided to stick with Old Mettle as her weapon of choice.^[3]

Etymology

• "Old Mettle" is likely a pun on "Old Metal."
  • In Chinese, its nickname is 老铁 Lǎotiě, "Old Metal". In some Chinese dialects, 铁 "iron" can be used as an adjective to describe a close friendship, and 老铁 "old metal" is often used as an informal word to address a friend.
