Chimera

Chimeras^{[Note 1]} are small, artificially produced animals found on Amphoreus.^[1] They are considered the mascots of Okhema.^[2]

Description

Chimeras are an artificially produced breed of animal accidentally created inside the Garden of Life using the Seed of Life.^[1] The researchers were attempting to cultivate the revival of three prehistoric animals that existed before the black tide: the Felys, the Canis, and the Terrazard.^[3] The team named the new lifeform after the mythological creature, the Chimera, and made the Garden of Life their habitat.^[1]

Chimeras are small, quadrupedal animals with a large head and a short body. They have a small "collar" of fur below their heads, as well as a tail that can vary in appearance. They have large eyes, a small nose, blush-marks on their cheeks, and a natural smile. Chimeras tend to have horns, though some do not, and the ones that do may either have one horn in the center of their head or two horns on either side, both of which are either straight or curved.

Despite their small and childish appearance, chimeras are very intelligent, understanding human speech despite not speaking it themselves. In order to understand what they say, a person must study extensively about them in the Grove, receive Cerces' blessing, or be their companion.^[2] A common trait shared between chimeras is that they tend to howl "Awoo" while they speak.

The research team is split on the chimeras' existence, with some believing the animals to be a mistake. However, chimeras have been proven to get along well with the civilians of Okhema,^[1] and even help out with their needs. These helping chimeras are put to work doing various jobs, and to that end are assembled into squads led by a human administrator. Chimera squads must meet specific goals or they risk being disbanded, while the administrator is paid a hefty fine and a memo of criticism at the citizens' assembly due to their status as mascots.^[2]

• The three prehistorical animal bases of the chimeras (Felys, Canis, and Terrazard) are references to cats, dogs, and lizards in real life, respectively.
• While the term "Chimera" can describe any creature with parts taken from various animals, appearance-wise, Amphorean chimeras strongly resemble the Manticore.
• Purchasing the Mysterious Gift (L) from Janus' Steed will allow the player to obtain a pet chimera, which will stay in their accommodation in "Eternal Holy City" Okhema. This chimera comes in four different colors, which is randomized per player.

Etymology

• In Greek mythology, the Chimera was a fire-breathing monster with the head and body of a lion, an additional goat head on its back, and a tail ending with a snake's head.
• The word "chimera" is also used in different topics of biology:
  • In molecular biology, a chimera is a single DNA sequence originating from multiple transcripts or DNA sequences.
  • In genetics, a chimera is a single organism composed of cells with more than one distinct genotype, caused by early embryo fusion, mutation, or grafting.
