Alatyr

Last updated 2026-09-09

Alatyr Village, or simply Alatyr (Russian: Алатыря Alatyrya), was a remote town in Snezhnaya that was abandoned several years before the start of the game. Alyosha was born and raised here.

Lore

Alatyr was situated in a remote part of Snezhnaya and thus, it would take days for official aid to arrive if issues arose.[1] During a particularly brutal winter when Alyosha was still young, a group of bandits robbed the town, sparing nobody. Using the hunting skills his father taught him, Alyosha pursued the bandits and slew them all in order to recover the stolen goods. However, the bandits had nothing to their names to begin with, so there was nothing which would help the town rebuild; none of the neighboring villages could afford to help, either. Soon, some Alatyr villagers plotted to become highwaymen themselves. Alyosha, seeing no other way to keep his household afloat, reluctantly took charge and established a rule against targeting innocents.[2]

While the town managed to regain its bearings by hunting other bandits, several members had only ever been interested in acquiring more wealth, and were not concerned by the means. Equipped with the skills Alyosha taught them, they began attacking travelers and other villagers. Feeling responsible, Alyosha headed into the forest alone and hunted down his former comrades, killing several and forcing the rest into submission. By the time the Fatui responded to the reports about the disturbances, everything had been settled, and the Fatui wrote off the incident as a bandits' turf war.[1]

Eventually, Alatyr was abandoned and its residents settled in other towns and cities. The exact reason is left unstated, but it is implied to have been due to the town's bad reputation.[3][4]

During the Archon Quest Gunfire in the Silent Lands in Chapter VII: Act I - Everwinter Without Mercy, Sretomorozsk's Liaison Officer, Shishkin, attempts to construct a sob story to explain his hoarding of Kresnik Kristall by stating it was for his family in Alatyr, and that this was a one-time mistake he has no desire to repeat. Alyosha interjects, pointing out the amount of missing Kristall is far greater than he has admitted and exposing both Shishkin and the town mayor's smuggling operation. Only after Shishkin is arrested and taken away does Alyosha explain that Alatyr has been abandoned for years.

Former Townspeople

Shishkin claims to hail from Alatyr.[3] If this is true, either he moved away before Alyosha was born, or Alatyr was large enough that the townspeople did not all know each other.

Fortunately, the suspicion and wariness the locals once harbored toward this boy from the bandit-ridden village of Alatyr had slowly given way to acceptance and trust.
