Etymology

Belleau is a portmanteau of the French words belle "beautiful" and eau "water."
- The region shares its name with the commune of Belleau in northern France. The commune was involved in the Battle of Belleau Wood, a major historic battle in World War I.

It's more probable that the name Belleau derives from Fontainebleau, a commune southeast of Paris renowned for its historical château and forest. In Chinese, Fontainebleau is translated as 枫丹白露 Fēngdān Báilù by renowned Chinese poet and essayist Zhu Ziqing^[1], where 枫丹 Fēngdān corresponds to "Fontaine" and 白露 Báilù to "Belleau." This translation suggests a significant link between the names in the game and the real-world location. While the English representation of Belleau does not directly reflect the latter part of Fontainebleau, the phonetic similarity and exact match in the Chinese translation could indicate an intentional reference.
