Lang-Gan

Lang-Gan was an ancient civilization that existed before the War of Funerary Flame as part of Teyvat's unified civilization. It was located on the western coast of Liyue,^[1] in what would later become The Chasm.

It was governed by Zibai^[2][3] and along other civilizations during the time of the Three Moons, such as Hyperborea, Arcadia, Sal Vindagnyr and Meropis, they made offerings to the moons.^[4]

History

Lang-Gan was a great and beautiful nation made to bless the children of humanity,^[5] and lived under the guidance of Zibai, an angel who served as Celestia's divine envoy.^[3][6] At the dawn of the civilization, Zibai bestowed the Yayu longbow upon the high priest of Lang-Gan, granting him the right to lead the civilization as its emperor.^[7][8]

The settlements of Lang-Gan stretched from peak to peak, and the lives of its people revolved around the mines. Zibai taught them the art of silk painting, as well as how to till the earth, sow grain, spin thread, and weave cloth.^[1][9] Under her blessings, the people came to worship her as the God of Soil and Grain.^[3]

Lang-Gan also worshipped the Three Moon Goddesses at a finely carved jade altar, where offerings and sacrifices were made.^[4] After becoming a Moon Envoy, Zibai was responsible for bestowing both the blessings of the heavens and moon upon the mortal realm.^[10]

After the Eternal and Iridescent Moons were shattered during the War of Funerary Flame, Lang-Gan became tainted with Abyssal corruption.^[3][11][12] In response, the Heavenly Principles sent down Celestial Nails on numerous places across Teyvat to heal the land,^[13][14] including Lang-Gan. Unwilling to abandon her people, Zibai chose not to heed Istaroth's advice and protect them by temporarily holding back the Celestial Nail, knowing that doing so would cost her life.^[6][3] This gave the inhabitants of Lang-Gan enough time to evacuate the city, after which they began traveling towards the east under Zibai's guidance.^[2] Some of these survivors are known to have settled in Chenyu Vale,^[15][16]bringing the jade altar with them,^[11] while others are suggested to have settled in the Guili Assembly.

The Celestial Nail ultimately transformed the region into The Chasm,^[17][18] burying Lang-Gan beneath the hills.^[1][5][19] The Celestial Nail that destroyed Lang-Gan came to be known as the Spiritstone.

Trivia

• Lang-Gan had no books; its people instead preserved their history and traditions through ballads, which were later transcribed and performed by poetry collectors for the high officials at court.^[8]

Etymology

• Langgan (Chinese: 琅玕 lánggān) is the ancient Chinese name of a gemstone which remains an enigma in the history of mineralogy; it has been identified, variously, as blue-green malachite, blue coral, white coral, whitish chalcedony, red spinel, and red jade.
