Natlantea

Natlantea was the civilization that preceded Natlan. It was ruled by the Pyro Dragon Sovereign Xiuhcoatl and the Thirteen Sovereign Lords. Its greatest city was the Sacred City of Tollan. This era was marked by the brutal rule of the dragons over humans, who lived in primitive tribes, and came to an end when Xbalanque raised an army and eventually defeated Xiuhcoatl and the Dragonlords, becoming the first Pyro Archon.
History
Xiuhcoatl was born from the Primal Flame as the Pyro Dragon Sovereign.[1] From his horn, he was said to have illuminated the world and transmitted wisdom. On that very same day, he split off a portion of the Primal Flame and used it to give birth to his younger brother, Kukulkan.[1] He also molded the Pyro Vishaps from the Primal Flame.[1] Xiuhcoatl went on to create the Thirteen Sovereign Lords — artificial intelligences who were considered both the descendants of the Pyro Sovereign and the pinnacle of Secret Source Mechanism technology.[2] Each was given an individual territory to rule.
Tonatiuh would later be constructed to anchor the "cable" in Chichen Uctokah that leads beyond Teyvat's skies.[1]
Xiuhcoatl also carved out the city of Tollan, which was considered rivaled only by Chichen Uctokah.[1]
However, the Heavenly Principles would soon arrive on Teyvat and defeat the Seven Sovereigns, including Xiuhcoatl, who was frozen in lava and fell into a state of false death.[1] In his absence, the Heavenly Principles likely took control of Natlantea and established a civilization overseen by Angels, who served as their divine envoys. Kukulkan presumably assumed the role of Regent during this time.[3] At some point after the defeat of the Seven Sovereigns, a corrupted Nibelung returned bearing the power of the Abyss.[1] Nibelung's arrival and call awakened Xiuhcoatl from his feigned death.[1] He stopped the Sovereign Lords from their exploration of the stars and their attempts to replicate moon-forging.[3] Along with the Sovereign Lords, Xiuhcoatl reclaimed control of Natlantea and devoured the Angels—[4]an act that caused part of the unified civilization in Natlantea to descend into savagery.
As a direct consequence of the War of Funerary Flame, the Ley Lines of Natlantea, which had been created by the Heavenly Principles, were destroyed.[5] Natlantea was also directly targeted by one of the Celestial Nails,[1] which struck the present-day Basin of Unnumbered Flames,[6] destroying Natlantea's phlogiston-rich soil. This devastation led the dragonborns of Natlantea to undergo regressive evolution.[1] In an attempt to save his race from becoming beasts of the wild, Xiuhcoatl, infested by the Abyss and gradually losing his lucidity, created the Huitzilopochtli, using his own eye as its control hub, along with the Astral Assemblages, in a final bid to banish the Abyss from Teyvat once and for all, experimenting on himself along the way.[1] Witnessing Xiuhcoatl's struggle and the decline of dragon civilization, Kukulkan lost faith in dragon-kind and gave a seed of phlogiston to the humans — specifically to Chaac.[7] This marked the reestablishment of human civilization in Natlantea.
The Thirteen Sovereign Lords each held different views regarding humans:
- The Third Lord, Ix Kemonel Jasjatem Oox, established a pact with the humans in her region.[8][9]
- The Eighth Lord, Ix Ajkotz'i'j Iq'ismal Waxak, adopted a human daughter, Lianca, and gifted her a bow crafted by the Second Lord, Ix Je'lal K'ua'l Ka'.[8]
- The Eleventh Lord, Ix Raq'lapuj Chue'q Buluk, loathed humans more than any of her peers.[2]
- The Fifth Lord, Aj K'astajibal Cha'ama' Ho'o, recommended culling the human population during one of the Sovereign Councils.[10]
- The First Lord, Aj Nimalaj Chuq'ab Hun, acknowledged Xbalanque and deemed him an enemy worthy of respect.[11]
- The Twelfth Lord, Ix Roq'ratik'obala' Ka'alahun, also recognized Xbalanque's worth moments before her death.[12]
Before Xiuhcoatl could complete his final plan, Xbalanque and the army he had unified under a single banner laid siege to Tollan, invading the city and killing ten of the Thirteen Sovereign Lords along with the Three Princes.[13] Xbalanque would go on to battle Xiuhcoatl,[1] and as they both fell from a great height, Xbalanque emerged from Xiuhcoatl's chest, reborn as the first Pyro Archon.[14]
Xbalanque's victory, followed by a treaty with Kukulkan, marked the end of dragon rule and effectively, the end of Natlantea.[14] The dragons of Natlan would eventually devolve into the Saurians.
