Holy Soil is soil that contains high concentrations of primordial elemental power from the three realms.^[1] Dragons are able to thrive in habitats with Holy Soil, but it is unsuitable for human habitation. The transformation of land into Holy Soil is called the Holy Soil phenomenon.

Overview

In Inazuma

The soil of Watatsumi Island is undergoing Holy Soil phenomenon by bleaching and losing its nutrients. According to local folklore, this is due to the spirit of the island feeling the call of Enkanomiya and sinking into its depths. If left unchecked, Watatsumi will one day become an infertile desert. To combat the erosion of the soil, the Sangonomiya Shrine will send someone down to Enkanomiya every few centuries to retrieve a Bloodbranch Coral left behind by Orobashi to seal the vishaps and use it to perform the Watatsumi Goryou Matsuri ritual, which will cause the "sunken spirit" to return. In reality, the ritual's purpose is to awaken Orobashi's second familiars, the Sangacorallia, which are creatures that break down the primitive elemental energy of the Light Realm into the milder energy of the Human Realm.^[2] The shrine maiden Tsuyuko, who has attended the Sumeru Akademiya, believes that the Holy Soil phenomenon is actually caused by seawater leaching away the nutrients in the soil, and that the Jade Coral Branch, which contains Orobashi's power, replenish the missing elements in the soil and stave off the bleaching.^[3]

After the Traveler successfully brings back a Bloodbranch Coral, the Divine Priestess Sangonomiya Kokomi performs the ritual, but it does not reverse the phenomenon and only stops it, which is something that has never happened before in history. An investigation reveals that the Void Realm has invaded Enkanomiya and suppressed interactions between the Light Realm and Human Realm.^[2] The situation is eventually resolved, but the source of the Bloodbranch Coral is cut off due to the vishaps rescuing their sealed kin.^[4]

In Natlan

According to Kukulkan, the phlogiston-rich soils were regarded by the Heavenly Principles as a form of the Holy Soil phenomenon and they sent down a celestial nail to terraform the land and geology into a more suitable environment for humans. The dragons were forced to devolve so they can survive in this new habitat and became the present-day saurians.^[5]

In Snezhnaya

According to Aksinya, when the ancient Hyperboreans attempted to create the Primordial Human from the corpse of the deceased Cryo Sovereign, the experiment went out of control, and the Sovereign's unchecked authority turned the whole of Snezhnaya into the "Holy Soil of primordial ice." The Heavenly Principles, witnessing this, sent down a nail on Hyperborea and sent it into the Shadow Realm.^[6]
