Ningyo is a young cyborg girl found in Arc City.[4] Her real name is unknown.[2]

Appearance

Ningyo is a young-looking girl with short, grey hair. Most of her face is covered with her mechanical parts.

Story

Ningyo was a victim of the Honkai Eruption in 2016, losing her parents during the event and injuring her head due to Honkai corruption. She was then subsequently found by the World Serpent and given a choice: accept surgery, or die. Ningyo accepted, receiving surgical implants and mechanical parts that made both her body and behavior cyborg-like. However, now she is able to process information much faster. She then started working for Gray Serpent[2] as a data and intel collector from the Web.[1] In Arc City, 2017, Gray Serpent had attained a large amount of stolen data and directed it all to Ningyo.[5]

Chapter IX — EX-1

Main article: Chapter IX — EX-1

Theresa Apocalypse, Raiden Mei, and Bronya Zaychik encounter Ningyo while they are on the trail of Kiana Kaslana. They find her after Bronya hacks into Gray Serpent's database system and disables the firewalls within.[6] Bronya then realizes that Gray Serpent had kept all his stolen data within Ningyo, and Theresa requests they find her via her monitoring system to locate Kiana.[5] They chase after Ningyo, and she summons mecha in response to protect her. However, they eventually catch up to Ningyo, who offers to pay for her intel as per Gray Serpent's orders. This offer is declined, as Bronya threatens her into leaving with them.[7]

They reach a stopping point, and after asking about Ningyo's identity, Theresa inquires about Kiana's whereabouts, but Ningyo is unable to tell her despite wanting to due to Gray Serpent having authority over her intel.[8] The group brings her elsewhere, where Theresa contacts Lieserl Albert Einstein for help with accessing the intel within Ningyo. Einstein then sends a shuttle their way at Theresa's request, but Ningyo suddenly remarks that she will not leave Arc City with them.[9] She claims that, despite Gray Serpent's death, Arc City is still the safest place for her due to less Honkai. Theresa tells her no city is safe unless they locate Kiana. At this, Ningyo reveals she'd been curious about how to end the Honkai and yet had found no answers in any calculations, data, or simulations.[4] Theresa shows doubt and expresses her determination to Ningyo, who remains unmoved and apologizes before summoning the city's mech control hub to destroy her as a way to test the group's need for her information.[10]

With no time to fight, Bronya opts to try to hijack Ningyo's master access privileges with Gray Serpent's chip and stop the signal.[11] But before she can, Rita Rossweisse appears, holding the Gray Serpent's eye. Rita quickly unlocks Ningyo's master access privileges and orders her to upload all her data and then self-destruct.[12] The group manages to fight Rita off but can't interrupt the self-destruct sequence, and Ningyo wakes up with no memory afterwards. Because of this, Bronya figures out that the self-destruct sequence was actually a formatting reboot.[13]

At the end of the chapter, Rita gives her debriefing to Schicksal Overseer Otto Apocalypse, stating that she managed to upload all of Ningyo's intel. Otto says in response that it was unfortunate that they had to destroy Ningyo.[14]

Chapter IX — EX-2

Main article: Chapter IX — EX-2

Now on the Hyperion, Einstein reveals that Ningyo's database had been reformatted, and she remains in sleep mode, with all her functions shut down. She adds that due to the reformatting, all of Ningyo's previous data on her quantum drive had been lost, and that she would need to remember the information using her human brain, giving her a new ego as a result. Einstein is unable to restore Ningyo's human brain, so she asks Theresa if she could use the Hyperion's processors instead and accesses the inside of Ningyo's data drive.[15]

Einstein slowly connects to various parts of Ningyo's brain, activating her hippocampus and receiving an encrypted signal that leads to a call with Gray Serpent,[16] who asks to reinstate the deal with Ningyo. When refused, he reactivates her quantum drive and hacks into the Hyperion, installing his malware through her.[17] Eventually, Gray Serpent leaves with his part from the deal, and the group starts to head towards The Deep.[18]

Chapter X

Main article: Chapter X

Having severed the link between Ningyo and the Hyperion, Einstein tells the group that they don't have the means to awaken her on the Hyperion and only could at Anti-Entropy's HQ. This presents as a conflict against Cocolia's SOS signal, and the group votes on where to go. Theresa votes for going to Anti-Entropy's HQ with Einstein, though the former questions how valuable Ningyo's intel may be. The rest vote in opposition. They split up their forces, with Mei and Frederica Nikola Tesla going with Ningyo to Anti-Entropy's HQ.[19]

Chapter XIII

Main article: Chapter XIII

Ningyo is mentioned when Rita reports to Otto that they had finished analyzing her intel and found that it included information on Kiana being in Arc City.[20] Rita then uses Ningyo's mobile data storage device to find Kiana.[21]

Chapter XIV

Main article: Chapter XIV

Rita mentions she sent a message for help to Mei via Ningyo. Later on, Mei successfully demands the Gray Serpent's eye from Rita to set Ningyo free.[22]

Chapter XXIII

Main article: Chapter XXIII

Ningyo is among the children inside the Salt Lake Anti-Entropy Base that occasionally play with Seele Vollerei.[3]

  15. Chapter IX — EX-2, Repairs
Einstein: Back to the main topic. The Ningyo's database has been formatted.
Einstein: She's now in sleep mode. All functions were shut down. I'll try to restore data structures and locate Kiana.
Einstein: The formatting erased all of the data on her quantum drive, but fortunately part of her brain structure is still human.
Einstein: I shall attempt memory recall and access her human brain data. We'll need to give her a new ego.
    [...]
Einstein: Restoration failed. The formatting was quite extreme. I must use another approach.
Einstein: Madam Theresa, I'll need to use the Hyperion's processors.

System: Ningyo data driver connected. Initiating scans.
Einstein: It seems the security measures did not get formatted.

Gray Serpent: Apologies. Schicksal complicated our deal, but I've already delivered the intel as promised.
Theresa: But the Ningyo has been formatted.
Gray Serpent: Correction: YOU formatted her. You should fix that problem yourselves.
Gray Serpent: Now I've kept my end of the bargain, and I will help myself to what I was promised...
Einstein: Wait. The Ningyo's quantum drive has activated once more. Impossible, I thought I...
Einstein: Alert. The Gray Serpent is using her to hack the battleship! He'll take control of the Hyperion soon.
    [...]
Einstein: We're too late. He has installed his malware.
  18. Chapter IX — EX-2, New Destination

Einstein: The Deep is a city from the Previous Era.
  19. Chapter X, Crossroads
Einstein: I've severed the link between the Ningyo and the mainframe of the Hyperion.
Einstein: But we lack the facilities to awaken her. We must use what we have at the AE HQ.
    Tesla: But what about Cocolia?
    [...]
Einstein: Let's think about this for 5 minutes and cast our votes afterwards.
    [...]
Einstein: But to be honest, Plan 1 isn't perfect either. There's too much uncertainty.
Einstein: Can we keep ourselves ahead of Otto? How useful is the Ningyo's intel?
    [...]
Theresa: Einstein and I voted for Plan 1. Mei, Bronya, and Tesla voted for Plan 2.
