Will of Honkai
Last updated 2026-08-04
The Will of Honkai is ostensibly the creator and leader of all Honkai. It acts as deuteragonist of the first part of the story.
Appearance
The Will of Honkai usually appears as a white, or colorless, featureless humanoid in the shape of the person that is currently speaking with it.
Story
More than 50,000 years ago, Dr. MEI from the MOTH once theorized that it is the great gestalt will of the Honkai and appropriately named it the "Will of Honkai" but never confirmed if it was a material force, sentient force of nature or even a god. Once a civilization is advanced enough, the Will of Honkai starts sending its heralds, the Herrschers, to destroy humanity.[1]
In the battle against the Final Herrscher, Dr. MEI sent Pardofelis, the 13th Flame-Chaser, and PROMETHEUS to 'hack' the Cocoon of Finality before the 'backdoor' closed. The intent was to ensure that it to only created the same cycle of Herrschers that had appeared in the Previous Era for the Current Era. PROMETHEUS eventually achieved this goal, fusing with the Will of Honkai.
Later Chapters
In later chapters, it was revealed that the Will of Honkai had never existed in the Previous Era.[1] The Will of Honkai is revealed to be the AI supercomputer called PROMETHEUS from the manga that Dr. MEI from the Previous Era created. Before the final battle against the Final Herrscher in the Previous Era, Mobius (one of the 13 Flame-Chasers), sent the 17th model of PROMETHEUS into the Imaginary Tree to hack it and give it a mind of its own, becoming Will of The Honkai. This was done to ensure that the Current Era's Herrschers stay mostly the same as the Previous Era ones so that people of the Current Era had a better fighting chance against them and would be better prepared. However, the tradeoff for this was that PROMETHEUS lost it's mind, and became the mind of the Imaginary Tree itself.[2] This is when it merged with all Honkai and became a god. In the Previous Era, Honkai was a chaotic natural force that came from the Imaginary Tree without a mind of its own. The Final Herrscher was born from this Tree and became the leader of all Herrschers and Honkai in the Previous Era. In the Current Era, PROMETHEUS has successfully hacked into the Tree and become an omnipotent god (Will of Honkai).
It then uses the remaining energy trapped in the Moon from the battle against the Final Herrscher from the Previous Era to gift Sirin four cores to destroy humanity. The Will of Honkai isn't really on anyone's side except Honkai. Otto says as much in Chapter XXVII when he talks about making deals with it.[3] The Will of Honkai now controls the Herrschers of the Current Era and which order they appear in, except for the Final Herrscher, as she was never defeated in the Previous Era. The Final Herrscher is the only Herrscher that the Will of Honkai isn't able to fully control. This is because, unlike other Herrschers, the Final Herrscher was born specifically to rule the others and was birthed from the Imaginary Tree to do so.
Later Arcs
In 2017, the Will of Honkai awakened three Herrschers in the same day: the Herrscher of Ice, Herrscher of Stars,[4] and Herrscher of Sentience. It was the Will of Honkai's answer to the human resistance and the betrayals of several Herrschers, as in the Current Era, the world has come to a better appreciation of what it means to be a human. Emotions and instincts is what now define humanity, in opposition to the rationalism of the Previous Era. However, all three Herrschers were soon defeated, further resisting the Will of Honkai's plans.

- Mei: Has the so-called Will of Honkai existed back in your era?
- Kevin: Will of Honkai?
- Mei: You don't know? Well, maybe the people of your era addressed it differently.
- Mei: This expression concretizes the concept of Honkai, the sole existence that reigns over all Herrschers. Basically the God of Honkai.
- Kevin: Some have compared Honkai to the God and Herrschers to its disciples. However, this was only an analogy.
- [...]
- Mei: I understand, but what I'm trying to ask is: What if it's more than an analogy?
- Mei: The person who raised this analogy may have based it on their personal experience with the Will of Honkai. This is entirely possible.
- Kevin: A logical inference, but it doesn't stand.
- Mei: Why?
- Kevin: Because it was the MOTHs themselves that introduced... and denied this analogy.

- Mobius: You'll become a Trojan horse projected to the imaginary side, impose the constraint of thought on Honkai, and drive it onto a track laid by humans.
- Mobius: Do you know what that really means?
- PROMETHEUS: I will no longer be able to emulate human thinking.
- Mobius: ... That's some downplaying.
- Mobius: On the pathway that connects this planet to the imaginary space, your invasion will induce the birth of countless parallel consciousnesses.
- Mobius: You should know the tentative name MEI gave them: Imaginary Renormalization Group.
- Mobius: Their existence solidifies the occurrence pattern of Honkai, allowing the power of Herrschers to remain unchanged to the greatest extent possible in all mappings.
- Mobius: In other words, you'll be the biggest contributor to the war against Honkai in the next era—because the Herrschers they will encounter, starting from the Herrscher of Reason, will be the same as those in our era.
- Mobius: But it comes at a price... Your consciousness will become one of them and be mercilessly engulfed by them, unless the only backdoor is activated correctly by someone.
