  • Nagamitsu, real name Elizabeth McSmith,[1] is a Schicksal scientist, Director of the St. 1504 Labs,[4] and the 17th holder of the "Nagamitsu" nickname.

    Appearance

Nagamitsu has long magenta hair and purple eyes. She is dressed in an unbuttoned white lab coat over a magenta office skirt underneath it. She then wears asymmetric thigh-high leggings in black and white, which are paired with white boots.

    Story

Nagamitsu originally went by her real name—given to her by her father—Elizabeth McSmith.[1] The origin of her current name was from 2012,[note 1] when Durandal first met her at the St. 1504 Labs and mistakenly asked if she could call her as such.[6] The title "Nagamitsu the 17th" was only held by the lab director as a legacy and not an actual name.[7] Nagamitsu, aware of the mistake but not wanting to bother correcting it, agreed to Durandal's nickname. From that day, she became commonly known as "Nagamitsu".[8]

After her and Durandal's introduction, Durandal specified that she was there since Otto Apocalypse told her that St. 1504 Labs was where she could get a Previous Era relic inside of her out. Nagamitsu believed that Durandal was merely another one of Otto's test subjects he had lost interest in, and the relic inside Durandal was a small, simple accident. As such, Nagamitsu agreed to give Durandal a full set of exams.[3]

The tests returned clean, with not even signs of Honkai Energy appearing. Nagamitsu continued to run tests on Durandal for half a year,[9] and then, out of desperation, she decided to check for neutrino radiation one day. The test came back more than positive, with Durandal radiating more neutrinos than nuclear power plants, causing Nagamitsu to realize that Durandal had a large, stable Bubble Universe in her body.[10]

After finding out there was a way to successfully track the Bubble Universe within her, Durandal became a constant patient[10] for Nagamitsu's check-ups, with over 216 visits.[11] In the following years, Nagamitsu heard stories from Durandal's adventures and witnessed her grow up.[12]

While writing about her history with Durandal, Nagamitsu wishes that she could continue supporting Durandal's dream until she gets a new one. After writing this, she says that she isn't like the Valkyries and is "essentially evil".[13]

    Chapter XXIII

    Main article: Chapter XXIII

Nagamitsu is first mentioned in relation to Herrscher of Dominance. Schicksal had found four reports of crimes with underlying common traits[14] and sent them to St. 1504 Labs for analysis. Nagamitsu was said to believe there were more reports relating to the four than they knew and that the coincidental themes between the reports meant that Schicksal was dealing with something new as well. She warned that if Schicksal were too late to mobilize, there would be large consequences.[4]

    Chapter XXV-EX

    Main article: Chapter XXV-EX

Nagamitsu first appears during Otto Apocalypse's attempt to link Durandal's bubble universe back to the Imaginary Tree.[15] She, alongside Rita Rossweisse and Amber, are present to supervise the experiment. Once Otto arrives, she lets him know that the 2nd Divine Key is not yet powered, meaning he would have more time to speak to them.[16] Eventually, she has to interrupt his speech due to the Key being ready. Before the test begins, Otto specifies that Nagamitsu's role is to maintain communication with Durandal via an upgraded [Genius+].[17]

As the test commences, Durandal worries for Otto's safety due to Nagamitsu having told her about how fragile floating objects were in the Sea of Quanta. However, Nagamitsu tells her that, due to Otto's body being made of Soulium, the chances of losing him were unlikely. Otto adds that there would only be a problem if the two lost contact with the outside world, since he transferred his consciousness into his current body. Nagamitsu responds that there would be nothing they could do then, as she had already spent two years improving the [Genius+]. Yet, it still lacked real-time consciousness projection due to insufficient capacity.[18] The test continues until Otto reminds Durandal of the possibility that the test may fail. At this point, Nagamitsu interrupts, questioning the negativity, given that Durandal was likely to complete her mission. She states that Durandal should learn how to quit while ahead, as they haven't yet reached a point where they would have to make a choice. Despite Durandal disagreeing with Nagamitsu, she thanks her for the concern, and Otto requests for Nagamitsu to explain the experiment's steps.[19]

The two complete her instructions until they reach a stopping point. Nagamitsu informs them that, if they explored further, they would go into unexplored territory underneath the Imaginary Tree instead of the Sea of Quanta. She says that, based on calculations, they should be able to move normally under the influence of the Imaginary Tree. She also apologizes for the shortage of information.[20]

After Durandal moves onward, Otto addresses Nagamitsu, telling her that if Durandal spent too long in the Imaginary Tree, they could use the [Genius+] to make a forced recall for the experiment's data. Additionally, he reveals that Nagamitsu had been assisting Durandal during the experiment. She replies to his confrontation with a laugh before stating that she was only testing the waters. She expresses doubt about his information, although Otto assures her that the recall would work.[21]

The experiment ends up succeeding, and the day after, Otto gives the group a speech regarding future plans, albeit Nagamitsu considered the first part of it unimportant.[22]

    Chapter XXVI

    Main article: Chapter XXVI

Nagamitsu is first mentioned by Li Sushang, who says that Nagamitsu had told her about a certain viewpoint of Kolosten. Following this, Otto brings up that Nagamitsu and Amber had been the two people to look after Li Sushang over the past few days. And, when Li Sushang asks Otto about having been rumored to have crossed the boundary between past and present, he first responds by saying that Nagamitsu must've told her as such, but that he didn't entirely bring back the past.[23]

Nagamitsu then appears when the cast is aboard the Hyperion. Lieserl Albert Einstein revealed new intel, and when Frederica Nikola Tesla questioned her about it, Nagamitsu made a surprise appearance, revealing herself as the source of the information. Nagamitsu then introduced herself to Tesla excitedly, asking if Tesla remembered her. However, Tesla doesn't recall who Nagamitsu is, which Nagamitsu understands considering Tesla's busy schedule. Nagamitsu then tells Tesla that she is a big fan of hers, having been a research assistant who showed up for one of her interviews.[5] After being interrogated by Tesla, Nagamitsu then gives them information regarding the multi-dimensional Honkai Energy distribution—having used Schicksal HQ's supercomputers to verify that it held characteristics similar to the Theater of Domination, suggesting that they have the same origin. She ends, stating that the intel was evidence that Otto's claims were accurate.[24] Nagamitsu is surprised when Tesla asks her what Otto's assertions were, and she gives the cast a briefing.[25]

Afterwards, Tesla quizzes Nagamitsu about how the verification proved Otto's claim and suggests that Nagamitsu didn't know how Otto came to his conclusion either. Tesla asks if she had investigated beyond the distribution of Honkai Energy, and in response, Nagamitsu directs the crew to visit three different locations to collect more data. She routes them to go to St. 1491 Square, St. 537 Church, and then Kaslana Street.[26] Before they leave, Nagamitsu hears Tesla and Durandal conversing and, while lightheartedly making fun of Durandal, promises Tesla that Durandal won't get in the way. Lastly, she offers Durandal sweets the next time she visits as an apology.[27]

    EX Chapter

    Main article: EX Chapter

Nagamitsu is briefly mentioned in two instances. The first is when Einstein brings up the Star of Eden, mentioning that Nagamitsu holds interest in it, which is why she shares information about the Divine Key with St. 1504 Labs. The second time is also brought up by Einstein when, during Theresa Apocalypse's combat exercise, she says that if Nagamitsu's experiment goes well, they could have enemies of higher standards for training.[28]

    Chapter XLII

    Main article: Chapter XLII

Nagamitsu is mentioned various times. She is first mentioned by Theresa in relation to Kiana Kaslana's homework. Theresa said that Nagamitsu had told her of Kiana's accuracy on calculus exercises being poor, which resulted in Kiana frantically leaving the conversation.[29] Secondly is when Rita asks Li Sushang to observe the stars alongside their group later by using a professional instrument made by Nagamitsu.[30] She is last mentioned in [AE Meeting Room], where Tesla calls over Einstein to take data on the ongoing real-time communication, since she believed Nagamitsu would want it from her later on.[31]

My name is Elizabeth McSmith. Nothing special about it.
When I was named, my dad didn't give it much thought—
"Why does her name have to be special? Isn't Beth cute?"
...However happy my dad is with this name, it's rarely used now.
For reasons I can't blame on others, people now call me by an exotic Far Eastern name:
      "Nagamitsu".

    3. 3.0 3.1 Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
Durandal: The Overseer said if there was a place where the Previous Era relic could be taken out from me, it had to be this lab.
      I understood immediately.
Mr. Apocalypse sent me another test subject that he had lost interest in.
The naive me thought this was just a simple case of something being left accidentally in her body.
So I assured her and arranged a full set of examinations.
    4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 Chapter XXIII, Prologue 1
Rita: Everything we found went to the St. 1504 Labs for analysis.
Rita: It was disconcerting when Director Nagamitsu said now that we had discovered four such coincidences...
Rita: ...there could very well be four hundred or four thousand undiscovered ones out there.
      Durandal: ...Almost like it's contagious.
Rita: Yes, Director Nagamitsu believes we're dealing with something entirely new...
Rita: She warned us if we couldn't mobilize all of Schicksal to get to the bottom of this, the consequences would be huge.
    5. 5.0 5.1 Chapter XXVI, Mysteries, Puppet Strings
      Now, aboard Hyperion—
Einstein: ...Okay, we understand the situation. Looks like our intel has been confirmed.
      Tesla: Huh? What intel?
Einstein: Let's let the one who provided the intel explain.
      Nagamitsu: —Surprise!
Nagamitsu: Hi, Tesla Senpai. Do you remember me? I'm Elizabeth McSmith! But my Schicksal colleagues call me Nagamitsu!
Tesla: ... Wait, wait, wait. Who are you?
Nagamitsu: Ah...I knew it. You're so busy, of course you wouldn't remember a research assistant who showed up late to an interview.
Nagamitsu: —I didn't want to weird you out just now. I'm a big fan, Tesla Senpai!
    6. Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
It all started five years ago—
Durandal: Excuse me, is this the St. 1504 Lab of Nagamitsu the 17th?
Nagamitsu: Yes, I'm the director here. Are you... Miss Ataegina?
Durandal: Hmm. Can I call you Nagamitsu?
    7. Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
Nagamitsu the 17th was simply part of the lab name, some sort of ancient legacy.
In the year 1504, a bladesmith from the Far East set up a workshop at Schicksal.
Later on, the workshop turned into a design institute and then a lab—
The Nagamitsu name refused to die and stuck with it.
Which is to say, the original Nagamitsu workshop has seen sixteen different masters or directors to become the lab it is now.
And in no way is the name associated with Elizabeth McSmith.
    8. 8.0 8.1 Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
Of course, she could have clarified it, but—
      She didn't bother.
      So she answered like this...
Nagamitsu: Ah... no, don't mind me.
      Durandal: Uh, sure... Nagamitsu.
Maybe it was because people found it interesting.
Maybe because Elizabeth McSmith sounded a mouthful.
Or maybe it was too hard to tell the six Smiths and three Elizabeths apart at the HQ.
Anyway, Nagamitsu became my new name that day.
    9. Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
Of course... the test results hit me hard the very instant I got my hands on them—
It was way beyond the reach of any medical measures.
X-Ray, ultrasonic, MRI—they all returned no anomaly. No sign of Honkai energy leak either.
...The trying lasted for half a year.
    10. 10.0 10.1 Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
Until one day, out of despair, I tried measuring neutrino radiation on her—
And I was shocked to find her body was emitting more neutrinos per second than ten nuclear power plants.
Unless there was a black hole in her heart or under her belly button—
I had to admit the impossible: a huge and stable space was somehow folded up inside her body.
Durandal: ...Great! The bubble universe began to stabilize after the inversion!
Durandal: Finally there's a way to find out! Thank you!
From that day on, this passionate girl became a frequent visitor of the lab.
She cared more about her inner neutrino radiation than her body measurements.
    11. Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
Durandal: ...Nagamitsu. How many regular check-ups have I done? Do you have the statistics?
Nagamitsu: Should be on the computer. Let me see...
Nagamitsu: ...This is the 216th time—the cube of the number 6.
    12. Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
As time passed on, I heard a lot of bizarre stories about another world from her:
Shakespeare the submarine piloting pirate, Thoreau the founder of the Republic of South American Aboriginals, Watt the brain-computer interface engineer...
...And I got to witness her fiery passion became deeper, more intense, but also more reserved as her age grew.
    13. Chapter XXV-EX, Epilogue
I know it sounds absurd saying this from where I stand.
But I do wish to keep supporting you until the day your dream comes true.
Until the day you find yourself a new dream.
Ooops, I'm really not like the Valkyries. I'm essentially evil.
    14. Chapter XXIII, Prologue 1
Rita: A group of curious reports.
Durandal opened her handheld hologram projector and took a quick look at the reports.
      Durandal: This is...
Rita: There's an underlying common trait shared by all seemingly irrelevant events.
Rita: A metro accident in London, a murder in Belgrade, a financial crisis in Frankfurt, a missing-person case in Calcutta...
    15. Chapter XXV-EX, Destiny
Otto: You might want to approach this next mission with a different attitude.
      Durandal: ?
Otto: Because you finally have a chance to live up to the name "Durandal".
Otto: Get ready. In half an hour, you'll assist me with an experiment which will attempt to link the bubble universe to the Imaginary Tree.
    16. Chapter XXV-EX, Outset
Half an hour later. Schicksal Floating Isles. Special-purpose lab for the Second Divine Key [Cosmic Juggernaut].
Otto: Excellent. Everyone is here on time.
Otto: Durandal, Rita, Nagamitsu, Amber—I appreciate you all looking after HQ in my absence.
Rita: No problem at all, Overseer.
Durandal: We were just doing what we should.
Nagamitsu: That's right. Also, Mr. Otto—
Nagamitsu: You can continue speaking for a while. The spacetime manipulation system needs 5 more minutes to warm up.
    17. Chapter XXV-EX, Outset
Otto: If we do so, in the not too distant future, we will be able to change the fate of—
Nagamitsu: The spacetime manipulation system is ready! Mr. Otto, the experiment can begin any time!
Otto: Well, looks like I'll have to be brief in my explanation.
      [...]
Otto: This time you will be equipped with an upgraded [Genius+] spacetime exploration unit.
Otto: Nagamitsu will use it to maintain communications with you while you are in complex spacetime environments.
    18. Chapter XXV-EX, Outset
Durandal: Please try to stay close to me, Overseer.
Durandal: According to Nagamitsu, objects floating in the Sea of Quanta far from a bubble universe are at risk of decaying into nothingness.
Nagamitsu: But because Mr. Otto's body is made out of Soulium, the risk is very low.
Otto: But if we lose connection with the outside world, we do have a problem. After all, I already transplanted my consciousness into this body.
      Durandal: Huh? Isn't that...
Nagamitsu: Nothing we can do about that. Even though I spent two years improving the Genius+, it doesn't support real-time consciousness projection.
Nagamitsu: There's just not enough bandwidth.
    19. Chapter XXV-EX, Theater
Otto: Yes. But as you know, among all the schemes for opposing Honkai...
Otto: There are none that are guaranteed to succeed.
      Nagamitsu: Hey—Mr. Otto!
Nagamitsu: Isn't today the day that Durandal will gloriously complete her mission? What's with the negativity?
Nagamitsu: You should learn how to quit while you're ahead.
Durandal: But what he's saying is true. And the truth shouldn't be avoided.
Nagamitsu: But we are not yet at the point where we have to make a choice...
Nagamitsu: Today, there's no need for you to—
Durandal: Uh... Thanks for your concern, Nagamitsu.
      [...]
Otto: Nagamitsu, please explain in detail the steps involved in the experiment. Your Overseer will keep his mouth shut now.
    20. Chapter XXV-EX, Good Luck
Durandal: This is also where Nagamitsu's instructions ended. Do we really not have any intel about what lies ahead?
Nagamitsu These spaces close to the Imaginary Tree are completely unexplored.
Nagamitsu: Your current location is still under the influence of the Sea of Quanta. If you go any further, you'll be completely within the realm of the Imaginary Tree.
Nagamitsu: The only thing we've been able to establish through our calculations is that you'll be able to move around normally in that realm.
Nagamitsu: I'm sorry that I cannot provide other useful intel for the grand finale of this experiment.
    21. Chapter XXV-EX, Good Luck
Without any hesitation, the girl stepped into the wormhole linking the different dimensions.
      [...]
      Otto: ...Nagamitsu.
Nagamitsu: What is it, Mr. Otto?
Otto: If we can use the Genius device to receive the data collected by Durandal, our experiment will be a success.
      [...]
Nagamitsu: So you're saying... if Durandal spends too long in the Imaginary Tree, we'll just initiate a forced recall with the Genius device?
Otto: Of course. We don't have any way of communicating with her in real-time. She understands that we can't wait for her indefinitely.
Otto: But there's no need to be pessimistic. After all, didn't you give her some help?
Nagamitsu: Hahaha... I've been found out. But I was just testing the waters.
Nagamitsu: How should I know whether it will really work?
Otto: It will work. You should know that the other side is also made up of excellent Valkyries who were once under my command.
    22. Chapter XXV-EX, Speech
It was the day after the conclusion of the experiment.
Otto: Thanks to everyone's hard work, yesterday's experiment was a complete success.
Otto: Going forward—and I believe it won't take too long—Schicksal will take a decisive step in the fight against Honkai.
      [...]
Nagamitsu: (Mr. Otto...Are you done with your speech?...Are you getting to the important part?)
    23. Chapter XXVI, Former Affairs
Li Sushang: The scenery here is wonderful. Nagamitsu told me about this place... I doubt I would have found it on my own.
      [...]
Li Sushang: But if so called freedom is you faking your own disappearance over the past few days...
Otto: Hahaha, that's my fault. For letting Amber and Nagamitsu take care of you during that time, please forgive me.
      [...]
Li Sushang: Alright... You win. But there was something that surprised me even more.
Li Sushang: Is it true that you've found a way to cross the boundary between past and present? And you've managed to "haunt" every place in this town?
Otto: Ah, Nagamitsu must have told you about that. But I didn't really "summon" the world of 500 years ago.
    24. Chapter XXVI, Mysteries, Puppet Strings
Tesla: Okay, why not just say that you're Schicksal technical staff? So, what were you saying to Einstein before?
Nagamitsu: Just now I used HQ's supercomputers to calculate the unusual multi-dimensional Honkai energy distribution— Ah, in a minute I'll send you the results—
Nagamitsu: —They show that the energy characteristics at the 4 inspection points are very similar to those of the Theater of Domination. They might arise from the same source.
Nagamitsu: This is evidence that Mr. Otto's assertions were accurate.
    25. Chapter XXVI, Mysteries, Puppet Strings
      Tesla: ... Assertions? What assertions?
Nagamitsu: Huh? Didn't Bianka— I mean Miss Durandal— tell you already?
Nagamitsu: "We've used the Theater of Domination for our experiments before, so it's quite possible that these anomalies could arise from a fragment of the lost Herrscher of Dominance core."
Nagamitsu: This is what Otto said about the matter, I thought you guys had already heard.
    26. Chapter XXVI, Mysteries, Puppet Strings
Tesla: But just now you said the calculations were evidence... could it be that you don't even know how Otto arrived at this conclusion?
Nagamitsu: Uh... as Tesla Senpai may already know, Schicksal's ordinary members aren't involved in strategic decisions like that without Mr. Otto's approval.
Nagamitsu: So if we're confused about the reasoning behind a decision, we have to investigate for ourselves to find the truth.
      [...]
Tesla: Getting back on topic— Aside from the Honkai energy distribution, did you discover anything more specific?
Nagamitsu: Hmm... If Tesla Senpai wants to collect all the relevant data, I suggest you go to St. 537 Church, St. 1491 Square, and the east end of Kaslana Street.
      [...]
Nagamitsu: You can go to St. 1491 Square first, which is closest to your current location. Then you can head east to St. 537 Church, and visit Kaslana Street last.
Theresa: Yeah, sounds like a good route.
    27. Chapter XXVI, Mysteries, Puppet Strings
Nagamitsu: Miss Durandal won't let anything bad happen, Tesla Senpai.
      Durandal: ...Huh?
Nagamitsu: Since you're smart in every other way, it's a shame that you say some dumb things.
Nagamitsu: Sorry for making fun of you.
      [...]
Durandal: ... That's enough, Nagamitsu. You can't force others to change their viewpoints for your own reasons.
Nagamitsu: Hehe, didn't I already apologize? How about I prepare some sweets for you next time you come to the lab?
    28. EX Chapter, Space Rehearsal
Einstein: True. Take the Star of Eden for example... Ms. Nagamitsu is intrigued by it, so we're happy to share information and discuss the possibilities of the 9th Divine Key with her lab.
      [...]
Einstein: Under the requirements of this rehearsal, we can only prepare these training machines to act as our make-believe enemies.
Einstein: If Nagamitsu's experiment goes smoothly in the future, we might be able to involve targets of higher standards for our trial battle.
    29. Chapter XLII, Accepting Communications, Moon Base
Theresa: Stop drooling! Did you finish Dr. Tesla's electromagnetics homework, Ki-a-na?
      Kiana: Eh, what? Aunt!
Theresa: Don't get all panicky now. I heard from Nagamitsu that your accuracy on the calculus exercises has always been lamentable. And you haven't even submitted the programming assignment assigned last week as well.
Kiana: ...Huh? Aunt, you... what are you saying? I can't hear you clearly—
Theresa: Drop the act, Kiana. We've already established that this is a completely delay-free communication. You can hear me loud and clear!
Kiana: Huh? Aunt, why is your projection so blurry? Are you talking? Oops, I can't hear you clearly, so I'm gonna drop the call now.
Theresa: I'm asking, when are you going to submit your homework?!
Kiana: Goodbye, homework—uh, no, goodbye, Aunt! Goodbye, Mei, Bronya, everyone!
    30. Chapter XLII, Accepting Communications, Schicksal HQ
Rita: I see. Then how about observing the stars with us when you're free? It's quite fascinating as well. All of you may join us too, if you're interested.
      Li Sushang: Observing the stars?
Rita: Yes, observing various star clusters in the Milky Way via the professional instrument made by Nagamitsu-sama.
    31. Chapter XLII, Accepting Communications, AE Meeting Room
Tesla: Mophead, come here! This is a golden opportunity for real-time communication and getting firsthand data—it's perfect since Nagamitsu isn't around. She'll definitely need me later!
