Ley Line

Last updated 2026-09-09

A mysterious network that links the whole world together, within which flow the elements. It's said the Ley Lines remember all things that happen in this world, from the surface down to the deepest depths...

The Ley Lines are a network of elemental energy and memories of everything that has lived in Teyvat, both on the surface and down in the Abyss.[1]

Overview

Ley Lines and Irminsul have existed in Teyvat since the era of the Dragons although they did not have the same purpose that they did now and instead had Teyvat's primal elemental energies flowing through. After the Heavenly Principles' arrival and subsequent conquering of Teyvat, the Ley Lines and Irminsul were modified into "a girdle that defends the planet" as well as "the anchor of fate".[2][3]

They were also remade to record the memories of the land, and disturbances in Ley Lines can allow others to experience the memories flowing within them.[4]

On the surface, at the extremities of the Ley Lines, Ley Line Blossoms can be formed at Ley Line Outcrops. These deposits are generated from the impeded flow of elemental energy, and use people's wills as their fertile soil in which to grow. They feed on elemental energy and can be revitalized with Original Resin in order to receive treasures.[5][6][7]

In Domains, Petrified Trees (extensions of Irminsul) are the instruments through which the Ley Lines flow. As the domains are built around these trees, the overwhelming elemental energy that surges through them causes Ley Line Disorders, which make the elements behave in an unpredictable way. Just like the blossoms, these trees can be revitalized with Original Resin to receive treasures.[8][9]

In Competition on the Sands, Layla alludes to the possibility that the Ley Lines are reflections of the constellations when seen from above. This may be supported by the fact that Teleport Waypoints are said to form "a certain order"[10], and Portable Waypoints are known to depend on the power of the Ley Lines.[11]

Story

During the ancient war between the Heavenly Principles and the Seven Sovereigns, Natlan's Ley Lines were destroyed.[12] Under the guidance of Ronova, the Angel Yohualtecuhtin, Lord of the Night, used the remnants of Natlan's Ley Lines to construct the Night Kingdom, which acts as a proxy Ley Line network with conditions unique to Natlan. Xbalanque, the first Pyro Archon, further strengthened the Night Kingdom and borrowed Ronova's power over death to establish the "rules" that aid Natlan against the Abyss.[13] Because of this, memories in Natlan are incompatible with those from other areas of Teyvat and vice versa.[14]

Due to Natlan's lack of stable Ley Lines, the cataclysm caused extreme damage to the land, and calculations estimated that there was a maximum of five hundred years before the Night Kingdom would be completely lost to the Abyss.[15]

Present Day

During the events of Archon Quest Chapter III: Act VI - Caribert, the Abyss Order's tampering with the Ley Lines in Avidya Forest cause the Traveler to fall unconscious and witness their sibling's memories from centuries ago, particularly of meeting Chlothar and his son Caribert.

The Loom of Fate, created by Caribert and the Abyss Order, is a device capable of weaving Ley Lines. In its incomplete form, it could only be used to create and implant memories. After the Abyss Order obtained the eye of the first Field Tiller, the Loom of Fate was completed and now has the power to weave real Ley Lines of its own. However, creating new Ley Lines can neither "replace" nor "extend" pre-existing ones.[16]

During the Archon Quest Chapter V: Act V - Incandescent Ode of Resurrection, the Traveler works with Mavuika to defeat the Abyssal invasion of Natlan and restore its weakened Ley Lines. Mavuika originally planned to sacrifice herself in order to completely restore the Night Kingdom, but the Fatui Harbinger Capitano intervenes and trades Mavuika's death with his own death, merging his life force with the Lord of the Night to strengthen and rewrite the rules of the Ley Lines. Due to this, Capitano is able to release the souls stored within his heart and guide them into the Night Kingdom, Khaenri'ahn and Natlanese alike. His curse of immortality allows her to live forever, and opened the Night Kingdom to accept the souls of foreigners that die in Natlan from that point on.[17]

During the events of Truth Amongst the Pages of Purana the Dendro Archon Nahida uses the power of the Pyro Gnosis to burn down Irminsul to stop Dottore and prevent him from corrupting it further, and in its stead Aaru was modified to become the new repository of the Ley Lines and maintain Nahida's existence. [18]

Trivia

  • The concept originates from the pseudoscientific belief that historical sites and landmarks are interconnected along deliberate alignments called "ley lines," which are thought to be paths channeling spiritual energy.
