Light Realm

Last updated 2026-09-10

The Light Realm, also known as the realm of the elements[1] and the Vishap Realm, is one of three realms in the world of Teyvat. The Light Realm is host to creatures that harness the pure, raw, primordial elements, also commonly known as elemental beings.[2][3] It is diametrically opposed to the Void Realm[4] and also incompatible with the Human Realm without adjustments being made to increase compatibility.[2]

Overview

The Light Realm is the place of origin for all pure, primordial elemental beings. The most prominent inhabitants of this realm are the Elemental Lifeforms and the Dragons, being ruled by the 7 Dragon Sovereigns and the Dragon King Nibelung who later were succeeded by the Three Moon Goddesses. As the primordial and original form of elemental energy in Teyvat, the seven elements were the bases of the eternal laws. It is the most pure, ancient and primordial form of elemental energy; just like a beam of light that can be split into seven colors, it is like the light before dispersion takes place. It can be considered synonymous with the phenomenon of Kuuvahki or Archaeolune Energy as these are described as the power of the light realm, and given the moon's light was created by the planet's seven primordial elements. Archaeolune Energy is the original and primordial form of Kuuvahki, and it is found on the Frost Moon.

The Light Realm is described by the Belyi Tsar and Aksinya as "undissipated hope itself," and its spiritual overflow as "love."[5] It is said to have the potential to "illuminate the entire cosmos," signifying "a boundless array of possibilities in its pure whiteness."[6]

When the Heavenly Principles arrived in Teyvat, it and its shades defeated the Seven Sovereigns and established the Human Realm, narrowing and refracting the Light Realm into the Seven Elements.[7] At some point, the Human Realm was interposed between the Light Realm and the Void Realm.[4] The three realms each have their separate but analogous concepts: the Human Realm's Ley Lines, the Light Realm's elemental currents, and the Void Realm's dark currents.[3]

After the defeat of the Seven Sovereigns, both nature and the Light Realm fell under the dominion of humanity, as the Heavenly Principles used phlogiston as inspiration to modify the Power of the Light Realm and create the modern Elemental Energy, a more easily controlled Elemental Energy which is more compatible to humans, and more adapted to combat the Abyss (Void Realm).[8] However, there were drastic consequences to this action: the narrowing of the countless possibilities contained in the Light Realm and the anchoring of Fate caused the "love" present at the birth of Teyvat to turn into "envy, hatred, and selfish desire," or "resentments and loathing of the world," which had to be consistently suppressed for the Human Realm to be maintained.[9] The anchoring of Fate caused the Abyss to anchor Teyvat from the end of time, eventually ensuring its eventual, but inevitable destruction.[5][6]

While elemental beings and creatures of the Human Realm are normally mutually incompatible, it is possible to make each other more compatible; vishaps were eventually modified to accept Orobashi's Bloodbranch Coral;[2] the Sangacorallia (or Sangocorexes) can break down the Light Realm's pure elemental energy into something more compatible for the Human Realm;[10] the Holy Soil of Natlan was similarly broken down by the use of Grainfruit and the Essence of Sacrifice.[11][12] However, the Void Realm is wholly incompatible with either realm and is highly dangerous to both, while the Light Realm's energy vanquishes the darkness of the Void Realm.[3] As a result, despite their hatred towards humanity, the vishaps lent humans its aid against the encroaching Void Realm after Enjou tricked them into disrupting the balance of the three realms in Enkanomiya.[1][13]

One example of a being from the Light Realm incorporating elements of the Void realm is Apep, who successfully adapted to abyssal forbidden knowledge after consuming the corrupted corpse of King Deshret, but suffered great infirmity as a result in the ensuing millennia.[14]

Trivia

  • Despite being elemental beings and the only confirmed creatures of the Light Realm, Vishaps are not counted as Elemental Lifeforms in the Archive; rather, they are listed under Mystical Beasts.
  • The description of the Light Realm as signifying "boundless possibilities" has some significant implications with regards to its relationship with the Abyss, which is described by Barbeloth as the "hatred carried by all the fates that will not come to pass."[15] This may also be why the Shadow Realm has a repellent relationship with the Abyss, as it similarly "teems with possibilities yet unobserved." The Shadow Realm may thus be close in nature to the Light Realm, or "that very first shadow which the purest of light had cast into the void."[6]
    • Similarly, the description of "resentment and loathing" left in Teyvat after the narrowing of the Light Realm aligns with the above description of "hatred," implying that the Light Realm may have been transformed into the Abyss in some way as a result of the Heavenly Principles' actions.
