The Eight Adepts (Chinese: 八奇 Bā Qí) lived in Liyue around the time of the Archon War. They were said to have had adeptus-like abilities, despite not being actual adepti.[1]

During the Archon War, they worked together to subdue the god Tao Dou when he disrupted the boundary between life and death. To do so, they used the Seven-and-Eight-Gates Method, which cost the life of one of their members, the Lone Butterfly of the Crimson Flame.[2]

Lore

It is said that Wind Reader and the Silverwing went traveling together following the defeat of Tao Dou. According to clan genealogies, Wind Reader's descendants became the Lan Clan of Chenyu Vale.[5] They continue to practice his Qimen Arts to this day, and treat the Silverwing — a silver sparrow — as one of their treasured symbols.

The Gold-Eyed Celadon Mare was once an Angel named Zibai who were sent to guide the civilization of Lang-Gan. During the War of Funerary Flame, Lang-Gan was sentenced to purification by Celestial Nail. Defying the will of the heaven, Zibai protected them from the calamity and was destroyed by it instead.[18] In her moments of death, Zibai used her Three Deadly Selves technique to split herself into three shades; Ziju, Zizhi, and Ziqiao. Taking a pity on her, Istaroth took her shattered soul and merged it with the shades to preserve her soul.[19] Ziju, merged with the Heavenly SoulTaiguang, then later ascended and became one with the Moon's Reflection.[20] During Lantern Rite Festival, Ziju was later encountered by the Traveler when the traveler's consciousness was pulled into the Reflection when moonlight's guidance in them left by Columbina[21] resonated with a relic once belonged to her.[22] The fake moon's reflection was dispelled when Ziju merged with the other two shades and revived as Zibai.

Meanwhile, Zizhi, merged with the Earth SoulShuangling, fell into a deep slumber within The Chasm,[23] until the return of the Frost Moon into the firmament awakened it and emerged in the form of a jade carriage relic along with other relics. These relics were then excavated during an archaeological expedition by Huishan Hall just few days before the same Lantern Rite took place.[24] Seeing the chance to break out, Zizhi then possessed one of the archaeologist, named Lu Xiangxiang and wreaked havoc in Wanmin Restaurant before subdued by Shenhe and taken away.[25] During her detainment, she was sent to the Bubu Pharmacy for a check-up only to escape. Not long after, she encountered Yelan, the Traveler, and Gaming only to escape by possessing the lattermost.[26] Continuing her havoc, the possessed Gaming later encountered Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper in their human form and yet again escaped by possessing the latter.[27] Not long after that, the possessed Mountain Shaper was encountered by the Traveler who then forced Zizhi to finally reveal herself. Seeing the intention to help from the Traveler, she then pulled them into her prison and provided them with a trial. By passing the trial, Zizhi then acknowledged them and told them her tale and later entrusted the Earth Soul within her to the Traveler, dematerializing herself in the process.[28]

Ziqiao, merged with the Human SoulYoujing, severed from the other two and was imprisoned within the Zhanzhu painting. During the Archon War period, Morax freed her from the painting and made a contract with her.[29] After that she took to wandering the lands of Liyue. In her directionless roam, she aided Morax in the Archon War and helped the Eight Adepts to subdue God Tree Tao Dou. Later when her power depleted, she retreated into the Qingce mountain range, continuing to wander in her form as a white horse.[30][31][16][17] During the same Lantern Rite, Zhongli managed to track her and offered her a new contract, to visit today's Liyue and enjoy the Lantern Rite with the Traveler and Paimon as her guide in exchange for the Human Soul, should she be satisfied.[32] During her tour, she learned that even when Lang-Gan is no more, its people left their mark and their legacy continued to live in Liyue to this day.[33] Satisfied, she then entrusted the Human Soul to the Traveler, also dematerializing herself in the process.[34]

At the peak of Lantern Rite Festival night, the Traveler and Zhongli released a Xiao Lantern imbued with both the Earth and Human Soul, hoping that Ziju might respond. Responding to their prayer, Ziju then merged with the Earth and Human Soul, reviving the true Zibai in the process.[35] Zibai currently resides in Baiju Guesthouse, arranged by the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor.[36]

Very little is known of the Two Sages of Lianshan, except that they practiced the secret art of Lianshan and preferred to live in seclusion. The Hidden Palace of Lianshan Formula was once their place of cultivation.[10]

The Yunlai Angler's rod-wielding techniques are believed to have formed the basis of Yunlai Swordsmanship, a sword-fighting style that is still practiced today (e.g., by Keqing).[6]

Old Man Wuwang, who is said to have looked up to the Lone Butterfly, took up her mantle after she disappeared. He trained the founders of Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in her methods, passing down the responsibility of guarding the border between life and death. Presumably, he also taught them about his own specialty, Qihuang sigils, which could be used to "catch demons, heal disease, and protect lives from the encroaching presence of death."[7][8]

Trivia

  • The Eight Adepts may have been inspired by the Eight Immortals from Chinese folklore.
  • In today's Liyue, the most common application of Qimen arts is by engraving rattan figures with protective sigils. These rattan figures have the property of absorbing inauspicious energy produced by fetor.[37]
    • The other less common application for it is in divination using Pentad Fortune Conveyance.[38]
  • Wangsheng Funeral Parlor started as something more akin to a doctor's office,[39] in line with Wuwang Kid's teaching of Qihuang sigils that were primarily used to catch demons, heal people, and subduing fetor. With the lattermost taking more prominence after Wuwang Kid took Lone Butterfly of the Crimson Flame's legacy in the Art of Homa.
  • Wuwang Kid was also a proficient swordsman.[40]
  • Wind Reader and Jade-Plumed Silverwing might've ended up as a couple after the incident of Tao Dou, where their union created the Lan family.[41]

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 Mainstream narrative holds that the Guizang Hermits and Lianshan Sages were humans. As they lived during the Archon War period, it is likely they have long since passed away.
  2. The Chinese name for Qiqi's Normal Attack, Ancient Sword Art, is Ancient Yunlai Swordsmanship (Chinese: 云来古剑法 Yúnlái Gǔ Jiànfǎ).
  3. The Art of Homa used by Wangsheng Funeral Palor to subdue fetor has butterfly motifs, hinting its origin.
  4. Prior to her revival during Lantern Rite Festival, Zijiao was freed from the Zhanzhu painting by Zhongli during the Archon War period and was free to wander the realm after that. The being known as Zibai encountered by the other Eight Adepts was actually Zijiao.
