Frost Moon

Last updated 2026-09-11

OverviewMap

The Frost Moon is a subregion located in Nod-Krai.[Note 1] It is accessed by progressing the World Quest Series Moon Gazing.

Outside of Ungien's Circle, the Frost Moon has turbulent Archaeolune energy which affects its overall gravity — standard jumps are much higher, and falling is much slower, significantly decreasing Fall DMG (although Skill jumps and gliding speed and fall velocity are unaffected). Parts of the Frost Moon, such as the Archaeolune Storm Research Center and its Out of Bounds areas have a unique Archaeolune Energy Disturbance Zone mechanic. When in an area affected by the disturbance zone or storm, a bar will gradually fill; once filled, if the player is not within a safe zone, they will be rendered incapacitated and be brought back to their most recent safe zone without any HP or Energy loss.

Archaeolune Energy

A form of energy very similar to kuuvahki, Archaeolune Energy is the basis of a number of mechanics on the Frost Moon. The player can absorb Archaeolune Energy from a variety of sources:

Absorbing Archaeolune Energy enables the following abilities:

Other

  • Ancient Moon Pearls can be seated within power stations to solve puzzles. The player can push them with their body, pull them by drawing Archaeolune Energy from them, or throw them using special launchers (which can also fling the player themselves).
  • Standing in archaeolune storms or the lunar sea causes the player to accumulate Exhaustion. If the player's Exhaustion meter maxes out, they will be incapacitated and are revived at the last safe location. The player can seek refuge on Floating Stones or in Storm Occlusion Fields.
  • Bubbles of Floating Ooze can carry the player upward, then launch them further upward upon bursting.
  • High-Speed Transit Lanes allow the player to travel between various locations on the Frost Moon. Using these lanes requires the nearby Transit Station to be activated, after which it also functions as a Teleport Waypoint.
  • In most places, the player is subject to a low gravity state. In some areas, the player may encounter weightless or hypergravity conditions. Within the launch tubes of the space-based weapon on the Dark Side of the Moon, the player can walk on the inner walls of the launch tubes due to the gravitational anomalies in the area. Gravimeters can change the effect of gravity in an area.
  • Material Storage Chests may contain objects or even enemies. Chests displaying a red X cannot be opened until the player performs some action, such as removing debris from on top of them, or solving a puzzle.
  • Pioneer Source Structures are machines powered by Archaeolune Energy. When not in alert mode, the player can draw Archaeolune Energy from them, which will momentarily disable them.
    • Annihilation Modules detonate moments after detecting an intruder's presence.
    • Edict Modules show a symbol on their holographic displays. Most will show additional information if the player approaches.
    • Stasis Modules transport certain objects. If one encounters an eligible object when it isn't already carrying something, it will pick it up. Drawing Archaeolune Energy from it will cause it to drop the object it's carrying.
    • Transmission Modules patrols a fixed path, teleporting away any intruders that it catches with its beam.
  • Shoaling Kuuhenki can change into various forms to assist the player.
  • Terminals can be found at many locations on the Frost Moon, allowing the player to read records, obtain maps, or activate Dragon facilities. Some require the player to use a repair tool to enable the desired functionality.

Descriptions

Long before the children of humanity were born from the cradle of the sky, three silver lights had already risen above the earth. The ancient spirits of the frostbound reaches called them "Dilimbabbar." By them, the waxing and waning of light were first distinguished, spring and autumn were set into order, and the passage of years slowly came to be. Yet now, as time flows ever onward, only one of those three silver lights remains.

Lore

The Frost Moon is the second of the Three Moons of Teyvat created by Nibelung and is said to be the brightest of the three. The hemisphere facing away from Teyvat has been converted into a massive cannon that draws upon the immense energy of the moon's core to fire devastating energy beams. This was the work of the returning Nibelung, who transformed it after imprisoning the Frost Moon Goddess Canon in order to weaponize it, along with the other two moons, against the Heavenly Principles.

It is the only moon known to have remained intact through the war of funerary flame, in which the other two moons were shattered, though it was banished beyond the false sky.[1][2][3] Despite being outside the false sky for over 6000 years, it is completely void of Abyssal presence.

Some time prior to the Heavenly Principles' initial invasion of Teyvat, the dragon scientist Ibni-Belum would pioneer a group of his kind to settle on the Frost Moon and construct many research facilities, including the Eye of Ibni-Belum, marking the start of Project Moongazer.[4] As such, Secret Source technology is present on the moon.

The Frost Moon's appearance has been significantly altered by the aforementioned dragon activity; the Moontide Sea, the lunar mare enveloping a large portion of the near side, is the result of the failed Lunar Veil project conducted by dragon researcher Lusalim. Ungien's Circle, visible from space as a yellowed crater, is a vivarium constructed by the dragon Life Scientist Ungien.

Following Canon's death, the Frostmoon Scions prophesied that a new goddess would arise to preside over the Frost Moon, which would ultimately come to pass with the birth of Columbina. At some point, the Heavenly Principles moved Aether and Lumine's Spaceship from its original location in Nod-Krai to the surface of the Frost Moon.[5]

During the events of the Archon Quest: Song of the Welkin Moon - Act VIII: True Moon, the Frost Moon was revitalized and was drawn back into the interior of the false sky, with Columbina taking Canon's place as the resident Moon Goddess.[6]

While exploring Nod-Krai, the Traveler and Paimon came upon who they thought was Columbina at the Misty Shoal, who led them to the Dunanna Forward Station. They discovered that the Columbina they saw was an impersonation by the black kuuhenki Eggie, who led them to the station so they could arrive on the Frost Moon.

Notes

  1. Although it is geographically its own region outside of Teyvat's surface, the game counts it as a Nod-Krai subregion, a group of areas, for gameplay purposes.
