Nod-Krai
Last updated 2026-09-09
Follow the silver thread spun by the new moon, traverse biting gales and desolate tundras as the snow-kissed lakes, fractured like mirrors, reflect their ageless, glacial radiance. The days are bitterly short, and the night stretches on like a dark, yawning maw. But even then, the light and song of the Welkin Moon will dance gently across the faces of visiting travelers. Up at ye towers, and let your lanterns blaze into the darkness! Until the day comes… when true moonlight bathes this land once more.
Nod-Krai, also known as the borderlands and formerly as Nephilheim,[2][3] is an autonomous region located on the edge of Teyvat in the southernmost part of Snezhnaya,[4] and one of the major regions in Genshin Impact. People from all over Teyvat congregate in Nod-Krai,[5] leading to the region gaining the reputation of being an "Elysium."[6][7] Nod-Krai has a deep connection to the Three Moons that once existed above Teyvat, and the Frostmoon Scions, the indigenous people of Nod-Krai, worship the Moon Goddess Kuutar, also known as the former Fatui Harbinger Columbina.
The Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon takes place in this region.
Description
Nod-Krai was formed from remnant material that was left over after the creation of the Three Moons.[8] It is especially hostile due to the harsh environment and lack of protective and regulative forces aside from the Voynich Guild, and Liben warns the Traveler to be wary if they go there. Those that are suspected to hold a large amount of Mora are also painted as a target by others.[5]
Nod-Krai includes locations such as Nasha Town where the "Speranza" restaurant operates, the Clink-Clank Krumkake Craftshop that produces many different inventions, as well as Hiisi Island that is home to the Frostmoon Scions. According to Helka, the Frostmoon Scions are a strange group that lives in the wilds and forests surrounding Nod-Krai, and people do not generally look into or approach them.[9] They also made several Statues of the New Moon dedicated to Columbina and spread them all across Nod-Krai.[10]
Some of the inhabitants of Nod-Krai are able to use kuuvahki, a special power that originates from the Three Moons and predates the seven elements of Teyvat. A Fatui stronghold operates in Nod-Krai, led by Il Dottore.[11] Before, the area was considered "dangerous yet lively," but in recent times, it has been more dangerous than usual. At some point, large-scale development had been planned for the area, but no traces of it exist to the current day, unless one counts the many scraps lying around. There is also a type of crab species residing in the area far different from those found in Fontaine. At some point after Helka left to explore monsters from the other nations, the Fatui had returned and moved plenty of construction supplies in as part of their "Palestar Edict," with rumors swirling that one or several Fatui Harbingers were present too. There were also "bad" situations to the north regarding Abyss influence.[9]
Ever since the cataclysm, Nod-Krai has been plagued by attacks from a group of Abyssal entities known as The Wild Hunt.[4] The Wild Hunt is controlled by Rerir, one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah, and he has been using the Wild Hunt to regain his power and reassemble his body after it was torn apart. In response to the Wild Hunt's threat, the Lightkeepers were established to fight it off, and have been doing so for centuries. Follow Rerir's banishment through the Moon Gate, the Wild Hunt has fell into control by infamous figures of legend like Rotwang and Roland.[12][13]
After learning new information during their expedition, the Knights of Favonius headed to Nod-Krai with Varka.[14] There, Varka noticed that the situation in Nod-Krai was incredibly tense, warning the Traveler through a letter that they had best be prepared before arriving.

Specific Exploration Mechanics
Nod-Krai features many unique mechanics and environmental hazards:
Polarized Kuuvahki
Kuuvahki is an energy similar to Natlan's Phlogiston and Fontaine's Arkhe, and is used in a wide variety of mechanics in Nod-Krai. In many places in Nod-Krai, this energy is polarized, shown as blue or red. Certain "unipolar" objects are infused with one polarity of kuuvahki or the other, which are attracted to other unipolar objects of the opposite polarity, and repel objects of the same polarity. In certain situations, the player can enter an empowered state that infuses them with one polarity or the other, enabling them to remotely push or pull kuuvahki infused objects of the appropriate polarity. Some "bipolar" objects can be manipulated by either polarity of kuuvahki. Kuuvahki energy can be used in the following ways:
- Harvest Mora Chests, Portable Bearings, Rainbowdrop Crystals, and kuuvahki-infused Icy Pebbles
- Remotely manipulate and carry ID cards (to deactivate Barrier Generators), Kuuvahki Dewdrops, kuuvahki-infused rocks, and Kuuvahki Relay Mechanisms (though carrying these can attract lightning)
- Arrange Assembly Modules while controlling Bobik
- Destroy Unipolar Crystonite, Recon Bots, and kuuvahki-infused debris
- Disarm the Fatui Oprichniki of their weaponry (or, in the case of higher-ranked Oprichniki officers, stagger them)
- Temporarily disable Landcruisers (Cutting Edge Fire Support Ground Effect Landcruiser and Force Recon Ground Effect Landcruiser only, ground-based Landcruisers are simply staggered)
- Cause objects emitting Unipolar Fields to attract or repel one another, or leap very high when empowered and standing on a Unipolar Field of the same polarity (often used for solving Moon Mirror puzzles)
- Temporarily turn into a kuuhenki for about 8 seconds. During this time, the player is in an empowered state, and can float, traverse rapidly along the ground, enter Mysterious Mists, and leap high into the air (if near certain kuuvahki-infused plants)
Unpolarized Kuuvahki
Unpolarized kuuvahki is exclusive to northern Nod-Krai, where it exists in opposition to abyssal energy. Things which are susceptible to unpolarized kuuvahki exist in one of three states: blighted (infected with abyssal energy), fallow, or suffused (empowered with kuuvahki). Many also trigger additional effects when suffused. Some suffused objects can release a kuuvahki current, which charges nearby kuuvahki-susceptible objects.
Some suffused objects may be carried by the player (one at a time):
- Throwing a Glimmerfruit causes it to explode, releasing a kuuvahki current. The plant will generate a new fruit shortly after the old one explodes.
- Cores from Intricate Blooms create a link between the core and the plant when carried. The length of this link can cause certain surrounding objects to move, often creating a pathway. Dropping the core fixes the objects to their current position.
- Mandragora generate a kuuvahki current when dropped or thrown near an unsuffused object, then enter a fallowed state.
- Shattered Barrier Core fragments can be collected and reassembled to clear nearby corruption as part of the World Quest Tower of Inversion in Series Nightingale's Song: Chapter I - Prelude to the Night Vigil.
- Slothsheep seed cores can be carried to guide the Slothsheep to a desired location, or be dropped or thrown to induce it to charge, releasing a kuuvahki current on impact.
- Spirebloom fruit allow the player to deploy a shield when holding down a button. Releasing it unleashes a kuuvahki lightblade. Another button controls the orientation of the lightblade. Lightblades can be used in several ways:
- Suffusing objects with kuuvahki energy
- Damaging abyssal monsters
- Launching them upwards by firing them at Cottonspring Flowers
- Severing Abyssal Riftlines
- Parrying attacks from Evil Eyes of Blightseep
Other kuuvahki or abyssal energy mechanics can be found in northern Nod-Krai:
- Abyssal Fog Barriers block access to certain objects, and can be dispelled by kuuvahki currents. Some Fog Barriers require that one or more connected Barriers be dispelled before they will go down themselves.
- Abyssal Riftlines can block passage to the player. They also appear over the heads of NPCs or enemies being manipulated by the Abyss. Sever them with Spirebloom lightblades to remove them.
- Aedon, Illuga's nightingale familiar, can accompany the player and reveal certain invisible objects during the World Quest Series Nightingale's Song.
- Blightseep Fields continuously drain the HP of a character inside them. Eliminating abyssal entities in the area will dissipate them.
- Evil Eyes of Blightseep will lock onto the player and fire abyssal attacks, which can be blocked by the Spirebloom shield. The Spirebloom lightblade does a small amount of damage to them, but parrying their attacks when the shield flashes will fire a strong deflecting counterattack that will destroy the attacking Evil Eyes in one hit.
- The Solaris Core and Nycalyx are a pair of plants that can be connected by beams of kuuvahki energy chained through other kuuvahki susceptible objects. Connecting them will trigger a powerful blast of kuuvahki which will clear nearby abyssal corruption.
- Cottonspring Flowers can be interacted with to launch the player high into the air. They can also launch certain small objects that are thrown at them, such as Mandragora or Spirebloom lightblades.
- Lunar Conflux Barriers dissipate when they are suffused, releasing any objects trapped within and recharging nearby susceptible objects. Some barriers require multiple kuuvahki charges before they will become suffused.
- Spirit Blooms generate a kuuvahki shield upon becoming suffused. This shield blocks attacks, knocks back abyssal monsters, and suffuses objects within it. Suffused Mandragora will seek the cover of a nearby Spirit Bloom when abyssal enemies are near.
- The Wild Hunt Lurks... is a climate found in Kipumaki Cliff. While within the area affected by this climate, the party will continuously accumulate Abyssal Decay. When the Abyssal Decay gauge is full, the active character will continuously lose HP. Decay accumulation can be slowed by a higher Moonsign level. There are several objects which will continuously decrease the player's accumulated Decay by standing next to them:
- Suffused Oath Lanterns
- Suffused Spirit Blooms
- Teleport Waypoints
- Allied Lightkeeper NPCs
Other
- Amazing 'Bots are small, cubical robots found in Nod-Krai, primarily on Lempo Isle. They can be found individually or joined together. They can help the player in a variety of ways, such as displaying hints to the player on their screen "faces," emitting kuuvahki energy to permit the player to enter an empowered state, emitting unipolar fields, or following the player to allow them to be gathered together to solve a puzzle.
- Cleaning Bots can be remotely controlled from certain panels on Paha Isle. They are typically used to access areas the player cannot normally enter, and are infused with kuuvahki energy, allowing manipulation of bipolar objects or empowering the player if they're next to it.
- Deepdark Shields are a shielding mechanic employed by Fishers of Hidden Depths. The shield can only be damaged with Elemental DMG and Elemental Reactions, with Lunar Reactions being three times as effective. When any Fisher's Deepdark Shield is broken, all nearby Fishers lose their Deepdark Shields for a limited time.
- The Lord of the Hidden Depths: Whisperer of Nightmares also deploys a Deepdark shield. It spawns four shieldless Fishers, which damage the boss's shield when killed. Breaking the boss's shield within 30 seconds will stun and damage the boss and greatly decrease its RES, while failing to do so will unleash a huge AOE attack.
- Iron Coins can be used to halt fleeing Weasel Thieves during the World Quest The Raven's Legacy in Series East of the Moon, West of the Sun. These coins may be connected to the Iron coins from the event Lost Riches.
- Kuuhenki are similar in appearance to Seelie and are also involved in puzzles. Approaching a white kuuhenki will often cause it to lead you to treasure. Blue and red kuuhenki cause the player to enter an empowered state on approach and will follow the player within a particular area. Certain kuuvahki-infused plants allow the player to turn into a kuuhenki for about 8 seconds, allowing them to float, traverse rapidly along the ground, enter patches of mist, and sometimes leap high into the air.
- Kuuhenki's Hidden Troves can be unlocked using Moon Seals which are found in Precious and Luxurious Chests in Nod-Krai. Each area requires 3 specific seals of the matching type: Evermoon, Irismoon, and Frost Moon.
- Lakeside Prisms can be found in the area of the Royal Court of the Seelie in Wavechaser Plain. They are followed in a similar manner to Seelie and can suffuse objects that they approach, helping to rebuild the Court in the World Quest Echoes of a Forsaken Song. Other similar prisms can be found within Dreadshade Mire, some of which assist the player in the World Quest To Turn Each Sin Against the Sinner.
- Lunoculi can be offered at Statue of the New Moon in Nod-Krai for rewards.
- Moonlanes are paths similar to the Spiritways of Natlan which allow you to transform into a kuuhenki and quickly traverse terrain or go places that are otherwise difficult to reach. Some have the player transform into a blue or red kuuhenki, which allows them to manipulate objects in or near their path using attraction and repulsion mechanics.
- Rippleweeds are flytrap-like plants that can be opened by throwing Kuuvahki Dewdrops at them, releasing whatever is inside. The ones around Blue Amber Lake contain Stellafruit, which are used in World Quest The Tale-Telling Heart in Series East of the Moon, West of the Sun.
- Rocks enveloped in kuuvahki can be thrown to break certain objects in the "Post-Apocalyptic Elysium" bunker during the World Quest Return to Sender in Series East of the Moon, West of the Sun.
- Sniffer Moles can help the player find Unipolar Fields that may not be visible in exchange for Kuuvahki Relay Mechanisms. Others in northern Nod-Krai may offer the player Glimmerfruit, or occasionally harmless exploding fruit that temporarily obscure the player's vision.
- The Wasteland Wild Hunt is an Enemy Family in Nod-Krai that are members of The Wild Hunt faction. Completely draining a Wild Hunt enemy's HP or using skills enhanced by Moonsign: Ascendant Gleam causes them to enter a "Grief-Stricken state" for a brief time. In this state, the enemy is immobilized and damage reduces their maximum HP. After about 10 seconds, their HP meter refills and they resume attacking. The enemy will only be defeated when their maximum HP is reduced to zero while in the Grief-Stricken state. Fighting them charges nearby Tideseal Stones, which can be activated when fully charged to damage Wild Hunt enemies.
